Honorable mention: Superbad
Boondocks saints was hilarious, just sayin'
the big lebowski
Not even an honorable mention for Army of Darkness (Evil Dead)
Not at all! For shame you leave out the cult 1994 classic comedy, PCU. ESPECIALLY considering the eerie similarities with our current cultural climate. BOOOOO watchMojo!!!!! 😡😡
Big Trouble In Little China should be on this list, too!
Honorable Mentions;
- Hot Fuzz
- Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle
- Dude, Where’s My Car?
- Pineapple Express
- Superbad
Big Trouble In Little China should also be noted.
Superbad isn’t a cult comedy, its main stream
Yep
Loved Superbad
@@Th3ranc0r Yeah. So are the rest. Making them NOT cult comedies.
What about Kingpin ? Bill Murray, Woody Harrelson, and Randy Quaid CLASSIC CULT COMEDY
Wow! Kingpin! Missed that one, thanks.
Kingpin was huge when it was released. Everyone was quoting it. Does not qualify as a cult comedy.
The number one pick really ties the list together, man
The Princess Bride OVERALL is one of the greatest movies ever. It hit EVERY check mark in a great movie and the story is soooooooooooo good. Shocking how underrated it still is.
Agreed 👍🏻 I have the fezzek action figure and 2 coloring books.
Funny, I have tried (really I have) to watch the film a few times over the years, just to try and understand the hype behind it. From when it first came out and every decade or so. Nope, just don't get why people like this film. 37 years later, It's still a snorefest to get through it. But hey, guess that's what makes the world go round. If we all liked the same things, life would be pretty boring.
INCONCEIVABLE !!
Yeah, shouldn't be on a cult list, it's an accepted GOAT.
Shirley you can't be serious to leave off Airplane.
Not a Cult Comedy. It did MASSIVE box office based on it's budget. I LOVE airplane and it's sequel (my absolute favs). Maybe The Ice Pirates or Johnny Dangerously? Both pretty funny!
I AM serious. And don't call me Shirley
How the hell did idiocracy not make the list?!
Its good but overrated.
i think it will make the documentary list
It's more of a pre-documentary.
It should replace The Blues Brothers which is NOT a cult comedy by WatchMojo's definition.
Harold and Maude finally got some love
I'd like to add: "Galaxy Quest", "Dogma" and "Life of Brian"
yeah, I think "Galaxy Quest" beats "Spaceballs"... And I think out of the three Monty Python movies I like "Meaning of Life" the most.
I agree about Galaxy and Brian. Never seen Dogma so don't have an opinion, man.
Yes but where is
'Withnail & I'?
I think that Tenacious D And The Pick Of Destiny should have been on the list!!
Not one Black comedy: “coming to America” “trading places “and “Friday” should be on this list in some form
Those were all successful at the time of release and aren't considered cult comedies, but there's certainly Black films that would qualify, like Black Dynamite.
Tell me you didn’t read the title of this video without telling me you didn’t read it
Best In Show is seriously so underrated. Levy and O'Hara are better in this movie than Schitts Creek and that says a lot.
Every time I watch this movie, I laugh harder. My favourite of all time!
Spinal Tap's Stonehenge isn't even orange!
a fish called wanda?
Nice one. Their best
The Big Lebowski is such a classic comedy. I love the way the Coen brothers think
🥈
Dont accept Black Hat's medals because it's spam.
@@Slayde.Wilson Reported.
@@BlackHatCinephile telling you that your medals are spam is not something to report someone for. Your constant bullying and false claims are why you deserve to be reported. You have serious mental issues.
Phillip Seymour Hoffman is so damn funny in that movie. I can watch it over and over.
My main objection is The Blues Brothers. It did incredibly well at the box office which I believe is contradictory to a "Cult Classic". Making $115.2M on a budget of 27.5M seems antithesis to the term "Cult Classic" which implies a failure at the box office only to be successful later. This, by the way, is the same reason WatchMojo denied Hot Fuzz as explained during Shaun of the Dead. Also, as another commenter pointed out, Napoleon Dynamite is not a cult comedy as it did MASSIVE box office numbers based on it's budget. Great movie though.
"Heathers" is such a classic black comedy, and the complete opposite of the more optimistic John Hughes movies which popularised the era. The makers of "Heathers 2018" learned the hard way why depicting teenagers murdering their classmates, and setting them up as suicides, just doesn't work in a Post Columbine world.

It was also flipping the script theres The Comment Section that explains why the show writer had to shelf the project due to the backlash the show received on their original trailers. Great concept great cast but the audience got butt hurt
@@Slayde.Wilson I know you are. I'm glad to see you finally realize it. Now fuggoff, Marc.
@@BlackHatCinephile you know whats more pointless. Your medals and your bullying. Where is your proof he is some one else. You have none because you are a liar that doesn't know how a public comment section works. Quit accusing others and grow up already.
"DO YOU SEE WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU FIND A STRANGER IN THE ALPS, LARRY?!?"
No Raising Arizona makes this list suspect
Army of Darkness is criminally missing.
I could watch The Big Lebowski a million times and not get sick of it. Clerks is pretty great too.
UHF should have been on this list, its a classic.
YOU GET TO DRINK FROM THE FIRE HOSE!!
I remember The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai being a huge cult classic at my college, along with Repo Man.
This is a list of pure joy. Most of these are some of my favorite movies of all time. I think I’d add Army of Darkness, The Burbs and Weekend at Bernie’s.
YES!!! Weekend at Bernie's!!! 😂
With Napolean Dynamite you can't forget Uncle Rico saying he could throw a ball over a mountain
Vote for Pedro.
@@dianeridley9804 I caught you a delicious bass.
From what little I remember of _The Princess Bride,_ the switched drinks scene was my favorite. One may call Vizinni falling for a trick he concocted “inconceivable!”
Kung Pow! Enter the Fist
The dude abides...
This aggression will not stand, man.
I've watched The Big Lebowski and Napoleon Dynamite many times; great childhood memories. 🎉

@Reaperguy67 funnyman is back in New video
Kingpin, the rent scene with the landlady is unforgettable.
You really jarred something loose there. I have a neighbor who looks and talks just like her hahaha. Unforgettable indeed
@@JayRiemenschneider did she make you pay the rent...

Of the ones listed, I like: Napoleon Dynamite, Scott Pilgrim, Blues Brothers, Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, Office Space, The Princess Bride, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, The Big Lebowski.
I was baffled when I saw Monty Python at number two, until I realized that that meant #1 had to be The Big Lebowski.
the only thing thats baffling is that these movies are even on the list. both are pretty equally terrible and lame.....they took spots from movies that actually deserve to be on this list like superbad, idiocracy, pineapple express
The Big Lebowski might be my favorite comedy of all time. It’s really up there with Ferris Beuller’s Day Off for me.
The Righteous Brothers got their name when, after an early performance, an audience member stood up and yelled, "That's righteous, brother!" That was, like, 1964. So, Heathers may have brought it back, but it sure as hell didn't invent it.
Heather's didn't even bring it back. It was popular throughout the 80s. Particularly in surf culture.
Something more to say about Dazed and Confused, it has an spectacular and legendary soundtrack.
Every Monty Python sketch!😂😂
I used to watch SuperTroopers on a daily basis. It’s THAT GOOD of a movie 😃
We appreciate how well you've articulated your insights. Keep doing your best.
Go away
'cult' is subjective, but i wouldve considered: Waiting for Guffman, Slapshot, Four Lions and The Room- which is still screened today- much like Rocky Horror.
Caddyshack should have made this list over 10 other movies!
Thank you for the update, WatchMojo..!! I think "The Naked Gun (1988)" was the best cult comedy movie ever. 🤣
While I LOVE The Naked Gun, it made $152.4M on a budget of $12M so it is not a "Cult Comedy". It was pretty massively successful, thankfully!
@@dorerd - quite successful! It had 2 sequels!
Great list for the most part. I would take out "Napoleon Dynamite" and add "Harold and Kumar go to White Castle". Also, I would move "Super Troopers" and "Spaceballs" up the list. I was at first shocked that "Monty Python and The Holy Grail" wasn't number 1, but then "The Big LeBowski" was number 1. Perfectly acceptable. Both are great movies.
One thing that's so awesome about SpaceBalls is the fact, that Lucas Film's Industrial Light and Magic made the special effects.
Super Troopers! yes! a must see! Spaceballs.. also genius. Blues brothers.. love it. Princess Bride.. should be a must see in every childhood. The Holy Grail; brilliant. when people were allowed to actually make funny movies.
Great list! I’ve never seen Scott Pilgrim vs The World or What We Do In The Shadows. Gonna have to check those out. I could never get through Rocky Horror Picture Show. I’ve tried a handful of times but never got into it. I would have added Brain Candy, the Kids In The Hall movie. It’s ridiculously funny!
I guess that's what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps.
It’s a mad mad mad mad world…
My favorite. "it's under a big W."
Some of my favorite movies of all time mentioned... nice. The Princess Bride, Clerks, Holy Grail, and The Big Lebowski. Would love to see Willow or The Labrynth here, but they may have been more well received. I cant really remember.
Ok. Im gonna say it. Elvira: Mistress of the Dark. Pure gold!!!
Princess Bride is THE most quoted film of all time & The Holy Grail is the second most quoted!
Clerks, Dazed and Confused are some of my favorites. 😂
Great list! Needs a part 2 for sure. Look at the comments for suggestions. Raising Arizona and Just Visiting are my 2 cents.
Can’t believe Drop Dead Gorgeous didn’t make the cut. Most of the entries on the list have long since hit mainstream
Surprised that Donnie Darko wasn't on the list
One of my all time cult favorites is Full Moon's entry into the sci-fi western genre prior to Joss Whedon's Firefly, Oblivion.
Napoleon Dynamite was a hit. It made almost 50 million and won a MTV movie award. Great movie, but not a cult movie
Agreed. Definitely not a "cult" classic.
Some great flicks on this list! WWDITS,Spinal Tap and Clerks are all so good!!
As it is only a Top 20, it was probably hard for some other iconic cult comedies to making it. Nevertheless, brilliant picks!
THE BEST LIST!!! All off these movies are iconic masterpieces !!
I love Harold and Maude! And try just getting through the credits of Monty Python and the Holy Grail without cracking up. It’s impossible. 😂
And oh the legendary midnight showings of Rocky Horror back in the day. If I went now, would I remember the audience dialogue? It’s been so long. 😮
I know it’s partially horror and not strictly comedy, “The Lost Boys” is another great cult classic!
Facebook gave me two 30 day bns for directly quoting Monty Python and The Holy Grail.
I wish people like jay and silent bob strike back as much as me.
Oh, I do! Love me some Jay and Silent Bob!! In my opinion, Kevin Smith's Peak!!!
@@dorerd do you want a chocolate covered pretzel
Someone needs to vet what deems it a "cult" comedy. Some of these choices are well loved by MANY and endlessly quoted.
Re: Harold and Maude. Maybe so, but all the people who were *supposed* to get it, did. I *love* that movie. I worked as an usher at our local movie house in "81. I got to see it, like, a dozen times in two weeks. It was awesome.
My favorite part about the list is the Shaun Of The Dead bit where the first second was from Hot Fuzz
No mention of UHF (1989)?! It’s celebrating its 35th anniversary this year!
As far as American Teen comedies is concerned, American Pie remains the ultimate cult film. Just because it was extremely successful, doesn't make it less of a cult film.
I honestly do not get The Princess Bride… I’ve never found it funny nor interesting. I feel like I’m missing something every time 😂😂😂
No hatred here folks btw, I’m just saying it’s charm I very much notice comes to others. I love that people LOVE it.
Yeah i know a lot of people that love it but it just bores me to tears
@@JayRiemenschneider I think what it is… it’s like Cary Elwes and Robin Wright actually do great and would be good in their fantasy romance movie that didn’t have the comedic angle FORCED into it. It’s like it’s two different movies forced together.
Beer Fest instead of Super Troopers. And where is KingPin? Woody Harrelson was awesome on that one.
Heathers was great
Did you really list Dazed and Confused as the high school comedy original? Guess you've never heard of Fast Times at Ridgemont High 🤦
Good point.
Apart from „A Fish Called Wanda“ I would also suggest Alfred Hitchcock‘s „The Trouble With Harry“. It‘s very slow paced and understated, but also one of the darkest comedies you‘ll ever see…
Tommy Boy. Dirty Work. Grandmas Boy. Half Baked.
Clerks STILL holds up
I would add Top Secret and The Full Monty, but all in all this is a good list. ❤
I almost (mangled) the line about immunity to Iocane Powder but I decided to instead reference Fallout 4 mod-delivered radio station _Tumbleweed Tunes_ as the station's deejay, the Dusty Dude, does sound a whole lot like Mister Elliot and abides as best one can in the ever-weirder post-apocaplypse.
Dazed should be number 1
I’ve watched all of these but 3. I’ve never watched Harold & Maude, Heathers, or The Rocky Horror Picture Show. I’m going to try to knock at least two of these out this weekend. I’ll have a tough time finding Harold and Maude.
Spaceballs is a comedy gem!
I'd say you missed two that I love: Drop dead gorgeous is criminally underrated and Death becomes her is my favorite movie of all time
Undercover Brother absolutely belongs on this list.
Where’s CLUE?!?!? This list is broken!
Uh.....no
the racist crap about Asians eating dogs is NOT FUNNY
Fear and Loathing, one of my favs😅😅😅
Spaceballs is my all time favorite movie. Makes me laugh all the time.
A forgotten B-movie that's worth seeing: Disorganised Crime.
Also, a better comedy with the Monty Python cast: Time Bandits.
Slap Shot deserves a spot!
Don't forget Tucker and Dale VS Evil
Richard Linklater's Bernie is one of the best. And Wayne's World.
I could be doing worse, seen all but 6 of them. Office Space, Harold and Maude, Dazed and Confused, Wet, Hot American Summer, Best in Show and Clerks are the ones I have yet to see.
What about Kingpin, Blazing Saddles, Kentucky Fried Movie, Stoned Age [to name a few]. Aren't they considered cult classics?
There were some good ones. I would add The Boondock Saints to the list
To this day in my family chat, we say moew instead of now
Anchorman? Tommy Boy? Better Off Dead? Hot Tub Time Machine? Dont Tell Mom the Babysitters Dead? Friday?
So many more should be on the list.
sorry, Chris Farley isn't funny
How many of those were successful at the box office? Box office success negates Cult Classic.
@@dorerd they were all failures at the box office i believe. Thats why i named these. May hottub did ok but the rest did better after they were released on vhs or dvd
Surely the whole purpose of this list was to have Withnail & I at number 1. I can only assume too many Camberwell Carrots caused you to forget.
I like to watch Clue & Murder by Death at the same evening. Hilarious!
Sound like good movies. Spaceballs is great😀,Wet Hot Summer,Scott Pilgrim vs The World,Office Space,Princess Bride,Dazed and Confused,Monty PythonI loved the show watching with mom and dad😀),Heathers. The Big Lebowski sounds cool too😀I didn't watch many.Great list😀
01:21 EXcellent descriptions of various police departments in the USA . Especially where I reside.
I’ve not seen Super Troopers, Harold And Maude, Wet Hot American Summer, Napoleon Dynamite, Best In Show and What We Do In The Shadows,
Well get watching!
