I had appendicitis and was in such severe pain that I lost the ability to walk or speak at times. I still waited until my husband got the kids out of bed, dropped them off at a friend's house, and drove me 45 minutes to a decent hospital RATHER THAN be stuck with the ambulance bill.
Thanks. I told my husband it was appendicitis... waking up with severe pain in my lower right abdomen and vomiting, it was pretty obvious to me. I texted him the symptoms in case I couldn't speak well enough to tell the doctor. I tried to walk into the ER from disabled parking. Couldn't make it. So, I clutched a pillar until he brought a wheelchair out to get me. He wheeled me in, told them that I thought I had appendicitis, and answered questions about my symptoms when I had trouble telling them. Once they processed everything, I went to the CT scan line behind someone with a traumatic head injury. I figured they were taking it seriously if I was second in line behind that patient. Luckily, my appendix wasn't as bad as it could have been, but they hooked me up to an IV with strong pain meds sooo quickly after the scan. Then, I basically slept until surgery later in the day. I was about 2 months postpartum, so I just wanted to have surgery and get back home to my baby. I was glad it turned out well and didn't have complications.
Had appendicitis as well. Waited an hour for my BF to get home, so i a shower, threw up some bile and was crawling around nearly crying in pain. Ended up getting an ambulance ride anyway cause the hospital I went to didn't have the capability to perform the surgery I needed. At least I wasn't charged twice
Yeah, I have never used an ambulance, but I do have a friend with a car and I have Medicaid, but if I think I won't die before I can get a ride, I will wait
Gotta be people on some government backed insurance plan (Medicare, Medicaid, VA, etc). If you are on private insurance, or Lord help you no insurance at all, that one ride will max out your out-of-pocket insurance caps.

I've had to go to the hospital a few times with my mother. There's always someone who came in through the ambulance expecting to skip the line, and end up being told patients are treated in order of severity all the same.
And, if your severity is low enough that you can wait a day before medical treatment is mandatory, go to an urgent care centre to actually skip the line and stop wasting the ER’s time and resources. Use the healthcare SYSTEM properly.
When I was a teenager, apparently a fractured arm was more severe than me puking blood and barely able to stay awake. Er had a very small waiting room so I was placed in the side hallway, next to a teen with a possible fractured arm. After a while a nurse came out to call him back, and him and his parents and his sister both looked at me, back at nurse and asked, shouldn't she be next. Nurse said, nope, we go in order of when you showed up. So they got up and left right in front of the nurse, so I could be taken next.
As someone whose girlfriend got the fast track with a brain bleed, you *don't* want to be the person getting rushed in and skipping the line past everyone else. Emergency care isn't express care or Burger King. If you get in fast, it's because you have the highest chance of dying, and you might not even get to leave the hospital the same month.
Yeah the express track is usually for when the person is going to die or damaged beyond repair and they need to bring em in asap. I’ve sat in an ambulance before… not the one in need but yeah I get it
"Like warm butter" is such a good description because I had that feeling several times. It only happened near the morning and I was just somehow blocking the blood flow to the rest of the arm. That was not fun
I was hit by a car when I was 17 and chose not to take an ambulance to the hospital because I was worried I'd be taking it from someone who needed it more. The EMT said it looked like I just sprained my knee since I was walking on it and not screaming in pain, so I started to walk home after giving my report to the police. Turns out I had a broken knee. I managed to walk a block on it before my friends had to carry me home crying.
Yeah, retired EMT here. Had a friend drive me to the ER because of an elevated heart rate. Told I was there for chest pains, elevated heart rate. Straight to the back. Triage nurse did EKG, while another put in heplock and drew blood. Then, they took me directly to a room bypassing registration. THATS when I knew it was serious. I was diagnosed with supraventricular tachycardia resolved in a few hours and was sent home.
Yep, faster in the world of emergency medicine is not a good thing. I was put right into a room, had a doc pulled out of another room, and under an x-ray in less than 15 minutes, and without getting my info or even asking basic safety questions. Then I figured out they'd determined it wasn't serious after I was ignored for 5 hours. At which point they proceeded to yell at me for wasting their time for an "obvious non emergency". 🙄
BTDT, drove myself to the ER across the street from work because I felt weird, I could feel my pulse in my throat, and my fingernails were turning purple. Apparently I looked the part too because the nurse at the registration desk looked spooked and I got the "follow me" treatment to an EKG machine and draw. Lo, a wild cardiologist appeared relatively jovial and looked at the strip and I swear to god I heard the guy say "Huh." and the enzymes got a "HUH.' before being asked several dozen times if I'd ever done cocaine and "take off your clothes, it's fluoroscopy time". Which... showed nothing, perfectly clear. An ultrasound later and hey, viral pericarditis w/tampenade. No, not the current "issue", since this was ~2004. Femoral artery collagen plugs suck, man.
Really? I have the same condition and had to wait 8+ hours in the waiting room TWICE. While getting yelled at by the admitting nurse that it was a panic attack because I was still conscious.🤬

EMT here! If the ER does not have enough beds, you get to sit in the waiting room with all of the others (Unless it is a VERY serious call)! We just roll you past all of the occupied rooms!

Like as an example in this situation it would be an ironic twist if it could involve a situation where the game is being played with the intention of promoting safety or preventing injuries. Imagine, for example, a "Safe Play" workshop aimed at teaching children about the importance of playing safely and avoiding injuries. If, during this workshop, an organizer decides to use Twister as a fun way to end the day, believing it to be a safe, injury-proof game under careful supervision, and then someone gets their hand twisted and injured while playing, that would be ironic.

I was a backcountry worker when I received a radio call for an injured hiker high up on a ridge. So being the closest person i was first to respond. When i got there the patient was hopping from rock to rock laughing. I introduced myself as the SAR person and they all at once plopped down on there but and said that there ankle was broken and needed a life flight out. I looked at the lower leg and found no injuries but treated with a sam splint and so forth. Then informed the patient that the rescue party was about 4-6 hours away and that the 25 or so volunteers would be carrying him out. 5 minutes later he decided that he could just walk out and to call off the rescue. Fortunately everyone volunteering was notified not to come however the fish and game police did meet him on the trail. He later admitted that he just thought he could get a free helicopter ride.
Prime example of a reason that Fire and EMS should be able to refuse transport for non emergent complaints or charge the person what an Uber would cost prior to transport.
@@andream9470 I am aware of the standard charge for transport, but it is after the transport and most never pay. If we had the ability to refuse transport or charge what an Uber ride to the hospital would cost for non emergent calls it would likely reduce the abuse on the system.
Yeah I was told that... It's a lie. I went to Urgent Care and they explained that I was so dehydrated that I needed, in fact it was CRITICAL that I go to the hospital. I reluctantly agreed and told them my BF would be out of work soon and he could take me. (I don't drive.) They said no, honey, you HAVE to go now! We need to call you an ambulance. Thinking they knew what they were talking about. I agreed. So I got rushed to the hospital because I was so dehydrated it could not wait... What did they do? They got me off the ambulance and proceeded to wheel me into the waiting room with everyone who walked in, and I waited there for no less than 6 hours being refused water as, "until you're seen, we can't let you eat or drink anything." Don't believe an ambulance ride will get you seen right away...
Wait, so Urgent Care couldn't just give you IV fliuds? That's insane. An 18 year old in the Army who's had a 40 hour Combat LifeSavers(CLS) course is allowed to give someone IV fluids. What a crazy world we live in.
Sparrow Same hospital that told me after falling that my leg was fine and that they wanted me to walk home despite me not being able to walk or stand. Had to argue with them to get crutches. A few weeks later I went to a specialist who found I broke off the back of my kneecap, and that I needed surgery. A few weeks after that I had the surgery and the Dr told me my leg had been internally bleeding that entire time leading up to my partial knee replacement. So... not a great hospital. *sighs*

Reasons I've driven myself to the hospital. Broken wrist, kidney stone, gallstone after waiting through the night in pain to go to an urgent care to be told I needed to go to hospital for imaging, and another kidney stone that was the first one that legit made me throw up. The last one was the only time I didn't park normally and security offered to move my car for me when they saw me, I apparently looked like death warmed over.

Had a miserable accident where I had to drive myself to the ER. It would be a 13 hour wait for 2 stitches starting at 11pm (all I wanted was an x-Ray to confirm I hadn’t cut a tendon). While there I watched an ornery old lady brought in by some EMTs who really could not wait to sign her over to the hospital. Let me say, grandma was not slowed down by falling off furniture while changing a light bulb. The EMTs were trying to explain this very point to grandma but she was arguing with the EMTs and the hospital staff about how she should be admitted immediately. I could see how desperate the EMTs were for the nurses to sign the paperwork and I could see the nurses not falling for it. A LONG argument three ways later and grandma signed the release form and the EMTs had to take her to a different hospital. The EMTs were NOT amused...but I got to laugh while waiting another five hours.
I ended up in the ER last week about a fun new problem that developed just to make sure nothing lethal or emergent was happening because I was only a week and a half post surgery in an adjacent area. I was, justifiably, there for a long time. I hated every second of it and cried on my nurse's shoulder after being examined because PTSD is a b1tch and being a r4pe survivour means getting needful sensitive exams is a freaking *nightmare*. But I was polite the whole way through because I'm not going to make *my* problem *their* problem; they're just trying to help me! When I was discharged the nurse thanked me for my patience when she gave me my referral paperwork. I said to her, "I'm always happy to wait when I come here. It means that whatever's going on with me I'm probably not dying anytime soon!".

Heyo! Work in an ER here! The EMS, in fact, does NOT get you in faster, if it's not life-threatening you'll just be checked in and then booted to the waiting room…… So please save us all the wasted time and energy and bring yourself in.
I did get given priority one time when I was young and had a compound arm fracture, which obviously isnt life threatening but I couldnt stop screaming in pain so i assume they gave me priority so they wouldnt have to deal with a small child screaming for hours 😭only other time ive been given priority was for a potential adrenal crisis (I had been expecting to have to wait for a while but the on call nurse at my endocrinologists office that I had spoken to called the hospital and told them I was coming and they were waiting outside for me and everything, which was wild) I once spent half a day waiting with my friend in the ER when her stomach tube was leaking pus. abled people truly have the wildest misconceptions about how fast they should be or will be seen at the ER...abled entitlement goes crazy lmao
And if it's a minor issue like a sprain or rash go to an urgent care clinic first - you'll end up saving a lot of money for most things and save hospital resources.

People on Govt assistance, illegal immigrants, and people who think their little boo-boo is more important waste time and supplies on things that could be resolved at a Primary Care physician, or an Urgent Care clinic. Or by not even going to the hospital at all.
This reminds me of how guilty I felt being rushed through hallway after hallway in the ER when I had my first seizure… then I read the differential diagnoses and understood. Stroke, encephalitis, intracranial hemorrhage, list goes on. Glad it wasn’t any of that!
After I cracked a couple vertebrae skiing, I remember it took a few (very painful) hours before I was able to see a doc and be told I was in for a painful few months but no lasting damage. In retrospect, I’m glad I had to wait. If it had been serious enough to see a doc right away, I probably wouldn’t be walking today.
Thats exactly why the medical fields prefers the "better safe than sorry" approach, even though you get situations like the video. Plenty of scary things share symptoms with not so scary things, and you really do need a doctor and tests to tell the difference.
That’s me. I had to take my gallbladder out, but it was kinda bad and I had to be transferred by ambulance to the main hospital in another town. I felt super guilty bc I felt like “I’m not even dying, I shouldn’t be making such drama by being on an ambulance” 😂😂😂
@@trouty7947 Take me, for example: When I was a kid, the first time I had a migraine, the symptoms were really bad, and my doctor was worried that it could be meningitis. I was just barely young enough to qualify to go to the pediatric ER instead of the regular ER, and got a spinal tap with no anesthetic. Which I REALLY hope I never have cause to get again.
I’ve had to take the ambulance for migraine at night because light sensitivity was so strong and vomiting was so frequent I couldn’t drive safely and had nobody else to take me. Believe me I asked everyone
I used to be a volunteer in an emergency room and you would not believe how pissed off people would get when they come in ambulance with non-life-threatening injuries get sent to the waiting room for 10 hours. They pay 5K for a two dollar ride.😂😂😂😂😂

If you can walk and talk normally, have full temporal and spatial awareness, normal temps, blood pressure, heart rate and blood sugar, then in 99.999% of cases you don’t get priority. Whoever is dying the fastest gets priority. Everyone else gets bumped back. Such are the laws at the ER. I am okay with that and so should everyone else. Last year I had to get to the ER for a broken elbow. It sucked but it certainly wasn’t life threatening. I waited for about 3 hours. But it was OK. I’d been much worse in my life. Any plans for the night were already off at that point anyway and I had audiobooks to keep me entertained during the wait so all was relatively chill for me. I was eventually moved to a treatment room two doors down from the trauma bay. What I heard from there across the hallway was bad enough. By the sound of it, someone was having a really, REALLY shitty day. I just hoped the lady who was bitching and moaning to the receptionist about how she’d been „waiting for half an hour already!“ got to wait for another couple hours. She made me roll my eyes so hard.
I was able to walk and talk normally and they didn't didn't blood pressure or anything and refused me help for hours. I was crying, throwing up in pain, going in and out of consciousness, all that. Told me to go to urgent care but urget care told me i immediately needed to go to the emergency room. Turns out I needed help BAD and had 3 separate doctors. I don't trust hospitals or doctors anymore. Triage doesn't always know best since alot of what I went through could've been avoided and would've saved me alot of money from therapy

Yup I’ve been the one screaming my head off in the trauma room I broke both the bones in my ankle and my foot was backwards I definitely had a lot of people poke their heads in while walking by and the scream I let out when they relocated it definitely traumatized some people
I don’t know how it is in the US but around here in Germany it definitely sometimes feels like it is that way. Like one time I drove my brother to the Hospital because he rammed a rod through his foot and we waited 7 hours before someone even looked at it. Like there was a puddle of blood beneath us and only then they noticed that it might be a bit more serious than the old lady casually strolling out the Ambulance saying shes short of breath. I‘ve had similar experiences a few times now, I still wont call an ambulance as we live in a rural area and it takes a lot longer than driving yourself. I guess its because they don’t pay attention to everyone who comes in and if you don’t scream in pain you won’t get noticed and unfortunately we were told to just endure pain and don’t scream about it…
Though I don't think it necessarily changes much. A couple of years ago my mom collapsed and was taken to the hospital in an ambulance and waited like 10 hours. When I had to go to the ambulance for a leg injury I did not take the ambulance and only had to wait 2h. So I think it depends a lot on how much is going on and also the hospital itself

I got sepsis when in 2017. Went into sepic shock. I don't remember much since. I was put into a coma and since then I don't remember ever going to the hospital, all I remember is going into the ambulance but don't remember going out of it. Being rushed into the hospital isn't a good thing at all haha
Yep, ive had a time where i woke up to ems getting me on a stretcher, then dont remember too much, kinda some, of the ride, then spotty getting wheeled in, and then fully came to later with an iv in and an ekg hooked up to me
I had a relative who wanted to try this instead of me driving him to the ER. It’s amazing how many people believe an ambulance means they get to skip the line.
I feel like there must be some exceptions, cause my grandpa went to the hospital several times because he could hardly breath, when ariving by ambulance he was given a bed imedietly but when we drove him he didn't even get brought back for the initial checks until we were in the waiting room for several hours.

IF you are in rough shape or get worse you can let them know... or if really bad shape when you come in. only went by ambulance twice others by car drop off at emerg: were kidney stones, pancreatitis lead to getting my gallbladder out. dropping my hubs off at emerg as well. usa should be doing the same thing when you get admitted.
If you get the "fast pass" to be seen in an emergency room, that means something is seriously wrong, and you need help ASAP! A broken or sprained wrist isn't very high on the life-threatening injuries list. So enjoy thinking about that ambulance bill while you are waiting waiting to be seen.

In an NHS hospital, you'll see the triage nurse to get your vitals done if you are conscious and aware enough to NOT need thrown at the nearest doctor before the ambulance even stops so that you can be called depending on where you fall below the super emergency. I was in on Christmas Day one year because the co-codamol my dad gave me for my tooth abcess (yay traumatic injuries causing problems ten years on!) did NOT agree with me and I had mystery pins and needles and short breath. I was not as much of an emergency as the poor grandfather that got rushed in after having a heart attack at dinner with his family.

After retiring from the Sheriff’s Office, I was fortunate to get on at our local hospital with their security department, I had to have medical insurance, which isn’t part of our retirement package. (I’d always wondered why security was needed in hospitals ) well I began noticing, the same people I was constantly responding to calls for service, were now the frequent flyers at our ER! They used our local EMS as their own medical Uber rides!! They didn’t have to pay for it either!! By law, EMS, nor ER can refuse service to them as long as they say the specific code words!! 9 out of 10 times they managed to eat for free in our cafeteria. Our ER staff made sure that they weren’t actually suffering from a life threatening condition, and have us wheel them right out in the waiting room with everyone else!! No fast pass just because you arrived in the ambulance!! It was so frustrating for all the people involved. They really need to impose a monetary penalty on people for abusing then EMS system!!
I got fast pass when I came in because i was unable to walk because my heart was feeling like it was suffocating. Luckily it was only a sprain to my sternum but i didn’t take an ambulance. Sometimes they assess and handle you in the triage faster but you don’t get fast pass exactly. Plus the price. Just go in the car it’s faster and more efficient for the hospital. They will determine if you are worth the fast pass panic or not.
I once got fast tracked through the ER from an ambulance. I was in so much pain they couldn't draw blood cause I was so tensed up. Worst pain I've ever felt in my life, almost fainted. If I'm not near to that pain level, I'll have someone take me to the ER, cause I'm not about to waste resources that could be used for a real emergency
I have been to the ER Five times unfortunately...The two times I arrived in an ambulance I was seen Immediately! Last summer It saved my life! A fever for five days that wouldn't break was pneumonia and then they discovered lung cancer, go figure, who knew?
Taking an ambulance doesn't mean you get in faster, you get prioritized based on the current demand in ER against your reported symptoms and outcome assessment. For example, this guy twisted his wrist he goes in the ambulance and arrives at the hospital. While a 45 year old man walks in from the street, who reports having chest pain, shortness or breath, and is profusely sweating shows up at the same time. The dude who walked in from the street is going to have a bed, and see a doctor before the guy who came in an ambulance, who was likely just dropped off and told to sit in the waiting room.
Idk if it's implied but adults getting drunk and playing twister isn't uncommon, hopefully this at least prevented drunk driving making things worse. Or you know these were just idiots and I am overthinking.
I've had to call 911 three times one summer and each time I apologized profusely to the fire department paramedics and ambulance EMTs who showed up to help me. I wasn't the least bit safe to walk from one end of my house to the other and I certainly wasn't going to drive but I still felt like I wasting their time.
Haha... ha... as an ER triage nurse this is so real, and guess what happens to these folks? Out to the lobby, to wait with everyone else. Utilizing the ambulance as an express pass when it's something minor rarely works out.
Curious then what's the case when the patient tries to refuse the ambo-ride because they felt like it was something minor, but paramedics convince the patient to go to the hospital and the patient still gets put into the waiting area? Is the patient in that scenario then also blamed for trying to "express pass"?
Right?! It's suppose to get you a room faster but more for life threatening issues. For example my daughter has heart issues which automatically puts at the top of the list for a room, if we walk into the ER there's a bit of a wait but by ambulance she would get a room even quicker because she's already back there so it avoids the waiting in the wait room, the paperwork, etc. and that's how it's supposed to work. If you're lucky enough to have someone with you the other person can be filling out paperwork, whether they rode with you or met you there, while the patient is being tended to. EMTs will not leave the patient until they are in a room hence why it's supposed to be quicker but again more life threatening reasons than not will get you in a room faster. Well it's supposed to.
Getting called to twister related injuries is rare but always possible while on duty.

I had appendicitis and was in such severe pain that I lost the ability to walk or speak at times. I still waited until my husband got the kids out of bed, dropped them off at a friend's house, and drove me 45 minutes to a decent hospital RATHER THAN be stuck with the ambulance bill.
Honestly anyone needing to do that is a failure of the healthcare system.

Thanks. I told my husband it was appendicitis... waking up with severe pain in my lower right abdomen and vomiting, it was pretty obvious to me. I texted him the symptoms in case I couldn't speak well enough to tell the doctor. I tried to walk into the ER from disabled parking. Couldn't make it. So, I clutched a pillar until he brought a wheelchair out to get me. He wheeled me in, told them that I thought I had appendicitis, and answered questions about my symptoms when I had trouble telling them.
Once they processed everything, I went to the CT scan line behind someone with a traumatic head injury. I figured they were taking it seriously if I was second in line behind that patient. Luckily, my appendix wasn't as bad as it could have been, but they hooked me up to an IV with strong pain meds sooo quickly after the scan.
Then, I basically slept until surgery later in the day. I was about 2 months postpartum, so I just wanted to have surgery and get back home to my baby. I was glad it turned out well and didn't have complications.
Thats awful having to go with pain like that because of the cost. I wish everyone had free healthcare like us (england)

Ended up getting an ambulance ride anyway cause the hospital I went to didn't have the capability to perform the surgery I needed. At least I wasn't charged twice
The fact people called an ambulance when they had a ride is a level of disposable income I have never been exposed to in all of my life.
Yeah, I have never used an ambulance, but I do have a friend with a car and I have Medicaid, but if I think I won't die before I can get a ride, I will wait
Gotta be people on some government backed insurance plan (Medicare, Medicaid, VA, etc). If you are on private insurance, or Lord help you no insurance at all, that one ride will max out your out-of-pocket insurance caps.

I've had to go to the hospital a few times with my mother. There's always someone who came in through the ambulance expecting to skip the line, and end up being told patients are treated in order of severity all the same.
Yes, it’s called “triage”. There is a reason for it, that the most severe cases are treated first, ambulance or not.

When I was a teenager, apparently a fractured arm was more severe than me puking blood and barely able to stay awake. Er had a very small waiting room so I was placed in the side hallway, next to a teen with a possible fractured arm. After a while a nurse came out to call him back, and him and his parents and his sister both looked at me, back at nurse and asked, shouldn't she be next. Nurse said, nope, we go in order of when you showed up. So they got up and left right in front of the nurse, so I could be taken next.
As someone whose girlfriend got the fast track with a brain bleed, you *don't* want to be the person getting rushed in and skipping the line past everyone else. Emergency care isn't express care or Burger King. If you get in fast, it's because you have the highest chance of dying, and you might not even get to leave the hospital the same month.

I was hit by a car when I was 17 and chose not to take an ambulance to the hospital because I was worried I'd be taking it from someone who needed it more. The EMT said it looked like I just sprained my knee since I was walking on it and not screaming in pain, so I started to walk home after giving my report to the police.
Turns out I had a broken knee. I managed to walk a block on it before my friends had to carry me home crying.
Yeah, retired EMT here. Had a friend drive me to the ER because of an elevated heart rate. Told I was there for chest pains, elevated heart rate. Straight to the back. Triage nurse did EKG, while another put in heplock and drew blood. Then, they took me directly to a room bypassing registration. THATS when I knew it was serious. I was diagnosed with supraventricular tachycardia resolved in a few hours and was sent home.
Yep, faster in the world of emergency medicine is not a good thing. I was put right into a room, had a doc pulled out of another room, and under an x-ray in less than 15 minutes, and without getting my info or even asking basic safety questions. Then I figured out they'd determined it wasn't serious after I was ignored for 5 hours. At which point they proceeded to yell at me for wasting their time for an "obvious non emergency". 🙄
SVT isn't wildly known, but it is very serious when it flares up. It's similar to a heart attack but caused by electrical problems instead of a clot.
BTDT, drove myself to the ER across the street from work because I felt weird, I could feel my pulse in my throat, and my fingernails were turning purple. Apparently I looked the part too because the nurse at the registration desk looked spooked and I got the "follow me" treatment to an EKG machine and draw. Lo, a wild cardiologist appeared relatively jovial and looked at the strip and I swear to god I heard the guy say "Huh." and the enzymes got a "HUH.' before being asked several dozen times if I'd ever done cocaine and "take off your clothes, it's fluoroscopy time". Which... showed nothing, perfectly clear.
An ultrasound later and hey, viral pericarditis w/tampenade. No, not the current "issue", since this was ~2004.

I was a backcountry worker when I received a radio call for an injured hiker high up on a ridge. So being the closest person i was first to respond. When i got there the patient was hopping from rock to rock laughing. I introduced myself as the SAR person and they all at once plopped down on there but and said that there ankle was broken and needed a life flight out. I looked at the lower leg and found no injuries but treated with a sam splint and so forth. Then informed the patient that the rescue party was about 4-6 hours away and that the 25 or so volunteers would be carrying him out. 5 minutes later he decided that he could just walk out and to call off the rescue. Fortunately everyone volunteering was notified not to come however the fish and game police did meet him on the trail. He later admitted that he just thought he could get a free helicopter ride.
That helicopter ride would push nearly $100k, charged to the patient, in the USA.

Yeah I was told that... It's a lie. I went to Urgent Care and they explained that I was so dehydrated that I needed, in fact it was CRITICAL that I go to the hospital. I reluctantly agreed and told them my BF would be out of work soon and he could take me. (I don't drive.) They said no, honey, you HAVE to go now! We need to call you an ambulance. Thinking they knew what they were talking about. I agreed. So I got rushed to the hospital because I was so dehydrated it could not wait... What did they do? They got me off the ambulance and proceeded to wheel me into the waiting room with everyone who walked in, and I waited there for no less than 6 hours being refused water as, "until you're seen, we can't let you eat or drink anything."

A few weeks later I went to a specialist who found I broke off the back of my kneecap, and that I needed surgery. A few weeks after that I had the surgery and the Dr told me my leg had been internally bleeding that entire time leading up to my partial knee replacement.
So... not a great hospital. *sighs*

Reasons I've driven myself to the hospital.
Broken wrist, kidney stone, gallstone after waiting through the night in pain to go to an urgent care to be told I needed to go to hospital for imaging, and another kidney stone that was the first one that legit made me throw up. The last one was the only time I didn't park normally and security offered to move my car for me when they saw me, I apparently looked like death warmed over.

Had a miserable accident where I had to drive myself to the ER. It would be a 13 hour wait for 2 stitches starting at 11pm (all I wanted was an x-Ray to confirm I hadn’t cut a tendon). While there I watched an ornery old lady brought in by some EMTs who really could not wait to sign her over to the hospital. Let me say, grandma was not slowed down by falling off furniture while changing a light bulb. The EMTs were trying to explain this very point to grandma but she was arguing with the EMTs and the hospital staff about how she should be admitted immediately. I could see how desperate the EMTs were for the nurses to sign the paperwork and I could see the nurses not falling for it. A LONG argument three ways later and grandma signed the release form and the EMTs had to take her to a different hospital. The EMTs were NOT amused...but I got to laugh while waiting another five hours.

"To triage" my favorite phrase when ems brings in anything not an emergency.
I ended up in the ER last week about a fun new problem that developed just to make sure nothing lethal or emergent was happening because I was only a week and a half post surgery in an adjacent area. I was, justifiably, there for a long time. I hated every second of it and cried on my nurse's shoulder after being examined because PTSD is a b1tch and being a r4pe survivour means getting needful sensitive exams is a freaking *nightmare*. But I was polite the whole way through because I'm not going to make *my* problem *their* problem; they're just trying to help me!
When I was discharged the nurse thanked me for my patience when she gave me my referral paperwork. I said to her, "I'm always happy to wait when I come here. It means that whatever's going on with me I'm probably not dying anytime soon!".

I did get given priority one time when I was young and had a compound arm fracture, which obviously isnt life threatening but I couldnt stop screaming in pain so i assume they gave me priority so they wouldnt have to deal with a small child screaming for hours 😭only other time ive been given priority was for a potential adrenal crisis (I had been expecting to have to wait for a while but the on call nurse at my endocrinologists office that I had spoken to called the hospital and told them I was coming and they were waiting outside for me and everything, which was wild) I once spent half a day waiting with my friend in the ER when her stomach tube was leaking pus. abled people truly have the wildest misconceptions about how fast they should be or will be seen at the ER...abled entitlement goes crazy lmao
And if it's a minor issue like a sprain or rash go to an urgent care clinic first - you'll end up saving a lot of money for most things and save hospital resources.

This reminds me of how guilty I felt being rushed through hallway after hallway in the ER when I had my first seizure… then I read the differential diagnoses and understood. Stroke, encephalitis, intracranial hemorrhage, list goes on. Glad it wasn’t any of that!
After I cracked a couple vertebrae skiing, I remember it took a few (very painful) hours before I was able to see a doc and be told I was in for a painful few months but no lasting damage.
In retrospect, I’m glad I had to wait. If it had been serious enough to see a doc right away, I probably wouldn’t be walking today.
Thats exactly why the medical fields prefers the "better safe than sorry" approach, even though you get situations like the video. Plenty of scary things share symptoms with not so scary things, and you really do need a doctor and tests to tell the difference.
That’s me. I had to take my gallbladder out, but it was kinda bad and I had to be transferred by ambulance to the main hospital in another town. I felt super guilty bc I felt like “I’m not even dying, I shouldn’t be making such drama by being on an ambulance” 😂😂😂

I was just barely young enough to qualify to go to the pediatric ER instead of the regular ER, and got a spinal tap with no anesthetic. Which I REALLY hope I never have cause to get again.
I’ve had to take the ambulance for migraine at night because light sensitivity was so strong and vomiting was so frequent I couldn’t drive safely and had nobody else to take me. Believe me I asked everyone

If you can walk and talk normally, have full temporal and spatial awareness, normal temps, blood pressure, heart rate and blood sugar, then in 99.999% of cases you don’t get priority. Whoever is dying the fastest gets priority. Everyone else gets bumped back. Such are the laws at the ER. I am okay with that and so should everyone else.
Last year I had to get to the ER for a broken elbow. It sucked but it certainly wasn’t life threatening. I waited for about 3 hours. But it was OK. I’d been much worse in my life. Any plans for the night were already off at that point anyway and I had audiobooks to keep me entertained during the wait so all was relatively chill for me. I was eventually moved to a treatment room two doors down from the trauma bay. What I heard from there across the hallway was bad enough. By the sound of it, someone was having a really, REALLY shitty day. I just hoped the lady who was bitching and moaning to the receptionist about how she’d been „waiting for half an hour already!“ got to wait for another couple hours. She made me roll my eyes so hard.
I was able to walk and talk normally and they didn't didn't blood pressure or anything and refused me help for hours. I was crying, throwing up in pain, going in and out of consciousness, all that. Told me to go to urgent care but urget care told me i immediately needed to go to the emergency room. Turns out I needed help BAD and had 3 separate doctors. I don't trust hospitals or doctors anymore. Triage doesn't always know best since alot of what I went through could've been avoided and would've saved me alot of money from therapy

Yup I’ve been the one screaming my head off in the trauma room I broke both the bones in my ankle and my foot was backwards I definitely had a lot of people poke their heads in while walking by and the scream I let out when they relocated it definitely traumatized some people

I don’t know how it is in the US but around here in Germany it definitely sometimes feels like it is that way. Like one time I drove my brother to the Hospital because he rammed a rod through his foot and we waited 7 hours before someone even looked at it. Like there was a puddle of blood beneath us and only then they noticed that it might be a bit more serious than the old lady casually strolling out the Ambulance saying shes short of breath.
I‘ve had similar experiences a few times now, I still wont call an ambulance as we live in a rural area and it takes a lot longer than driving yourself.
I guess its because they don’t pay attention to everyone who comes in and if you don’t scream in pain you won’t get noticed and unfortunately we were told to just endure pain and don’t scream about it…
Though I don't think it necessarily changes much. A couple of years ago my mom collapsed and was taken to the hospital in an ambulance and waited like 10 hours.
When I had to go to the ambulance for a leg injury I did not take the ambulance and only had to wait 2h.
So I think it depends a lot on how much is going on and also the hospital itself

I got sepsis when in 2017. Went into sepic shock. I don't remember much since. I was put into a coma and since then I don't remember ever going to the hospital, all I remember is going into the ambulance but don't remember going out of it. Being rushed into the hospital isn't a good thing at all haha

I feel like there must be some exceptions, cause my grandpa went to the hospital several times because he could hardly breath, when ariving by ambulance he was given a bed imedietly but when we drove him he didn't even get brought back for the initial checks until we were in the waiting room for several hours.

IF you are in rough shape or get worse you can let them know... or if really bad shape when you come in. only went by ambulance twice others by car drop off at emerg: were kidney stones, pancreatitis lead to getting my gallbladder out. dropping my hubs off at emerg as well.

Yep. Seeing a doctor less than 10 minutes after parking, who was pulled out of another patients room to see you, and then being sent straight to imaging skipping the whole line is not fun. Of course then I figured out it wasn't serious after they ignored me for the next 5 hours. Oh well, better than the alternative.
In an NHS hospital, you'll see the triage nurse to get your vitals done if you are conscious and aware enough to NOT need thrown at the nearest doctor before the ambulance even stops so that you can be called depending on where you fall below the super emergency.
I was in on Christmas Day one year because the co-codamol my dad gave me for my tooth abcess (yay traumatic injuries causing problems ten years on!) did NOT agree with me and I had mystery pins and needles and short breath. I was not as much of an emergency as the poor grandfather that got rushed in after having a heart attack at dinner with his family.

After retiring from the Sheriff’s Office, I was fortunate to get on at our local hospital with their security department, I had to have medical insurance, which isn’t part of our retirement package. (I’d always wondered why security was needed in hospitals ) well I began noticing, the same people I was constantly responding to calls for service, were now the frequent flyers at our ER! They used our local EMS as their own medical Uber rides!! They didn’t have to pay for it either!! By law, EMS, nor ER can refuse service to them as long as they say the specific code words!! 9 out of 10 times they managed to eat for free in our cafeteria. Our ER staff made sure that they weren’t actually suffering from a life threatening condition, and have us wheel them right out in the waiting room with everyone else!! No fast pass just because you arrived in the ambulance!!
It was so frustrating for all the people involved. They really need to impose a monetary penalty on people for abusing then EMS system!!

I got fast pass when I came in because i was unable to walk because my heart was feeling like it was suffocating. Luckily it was only a sprain to my sternum but i didn’t take an ambulance. Sometimes they assess and handle you in the triage faster but you don’t get fast pass exactly.
Plus the price. Just go in the car it’s faster and more efficient for the hospital. They will determine if you are worth the fast pass panic or not.

I once got fast tracked through the ER from an ambulance. I was in so much pain they couldn't draw blood cause I was so tensed up. Worst pain I've ever felt in my life, almost fainted. If I'm not near to that pain level, I'll have someone take me to the ER, cause I'm not about to waste resources that could be used for a real emergency
I think good way to think about an ambulance is "im in so much pain/so ill i can't get to the hospital, they need to come to me"
Having been in alot ambulance rides for grand mal seizures, I want to give people like this a real reason to need that express pass.
I have been to the ER Five times unfortunately...The two times I arrived in an ambulance I was seen Immediately! Last summer It saved my life! A fever for five days that wouldn't break was pneumonia and then they discovered lung cancer, go figure, who knew?

Taking an ambulance doesn't mean you get in faster, you get prioritized based on the current demand in ER against your reported symptoms and outcome assessment.
For example, this guy twisted his wrist he goes in the ambulance and arrives at the hospital. While a 45 year old man walks in from the street, who reports having chest pain, shortness or breath, and is profusely sweating shows up at the same time.
The dude who walked in from the street is going to have a bed, and see a doctor before the guy who came in an ambulance, who was likely just dropped off and told to sit in the waiting room.

I've had to call 911 three times one summer and each time I apologized profusely to the fire department paramedics and ambulance EMTs who showed up to help me. I wasn't the least bit safe to walk from one end of my house to the other and I certainly wasn't going to drive but I still felt like I wasting their time.

Out to the lobby, to wait with everyone else. Utilizing the ambulance as an express pass when it's something minor rarely works out.
Curious then what's the case when the patient tries to refuse the ambo-ride because they felt like it was something minor, but paramedics convince the patient to go to the hospital and the patient still gets put into the waiting area? Is the patient in that scenario then also blamed for trying to "express pass"?

Right?! It's suppose to get you a room faster but more for life threatening issues. For example my daughter has heart issues which automatically puts at the top of the list for a room, if we walk into the ER there's a bit of a wait but by ambulance she would get a room even quicker because she's already back there so it avoids the waiting in the wait room, the paperwork, etc. and that's how it's supposed to work. If you're lucky enough to have someone with you the other person can be filling out paperwork, whether they rode with you or met you there, while the patient is being tended to. EMTs will not leave the patient until they are in a room hence why it's supposed to be quicker but again more life threatening reasons than not will get you in a room faster. Well it's supposed to.
