I bought a Diablo with bad CarFax

  • Five or six years ago I had the opportunity to buy one of my dream cars. Unfortunately, I looked to find the best deal and did not take my father's advice. He’s my personal saga about a Lamborghini Diablo SV I purchased with a bad CarFax. After $15,000-20,000 spent, the car was perfect, but the time and headache were not fun! I definitely learned an incredible personal lesson, that has become the DNA of Curated.

I 100% agree. I bought a 550 that needed some work...$8k later, it was finally starting to get in good mechanic shape but still had some gremlins. While I loved it, it got old...so I purchased the cleanest TDF blue F430 I could find. It’s been flawless and I’ve enjoyed the experience more. Lesson learned.

I love your videos John, great stories, great production and how you tell the story is clear and entertaining. Such an underrated and under-subscribed channel. And yes, I’ve seen it first hand. My uncle imported in a ‘69 camaro from the USA, and for the amount of work he’s spent on the car, he would have been better off just saving up and extra year or two for a car that’s going to run and drive with no problems.

John, I have wondered about buying higher mileage exotic cars. I work on both of my DeLoreans myself, one is low mileage and the other is about twice the mileage of the other.
For a person like me, who is willing to do their own work, including enfi engine removal and frame/body separation, do you think it can be worth it to buy a high mileage exotic, such as a Lamborghini?

Hi John, I do really like your content and have watched your Countach videos many times. In this video, you didn’t really answer the question- is a low mielage car, in a pristine condition a good car? It’s obvious that a car with a bad car fax will probably be problematic but as a guy who has won two UK concourses (Salon Prive2016 and City Concours 2018 with my manual 2003 Murcielago) it’s a myth that a low mileage car that looks pristine is less problematic than an almost perfect car with more miles. I work on my cars with my dad, technician and fellow enthusiasts and collection cars are a mixed bunch. I’ve seen you doing a spark plug change on a Countach so I assume you work on most of the cars. Low mileage cars often don’t have the consumables changed such as rubber hoses, bushes and tyres. They also have leaking seals and the engines aren’t bedded in until 4000 miles. I also own a 2013 Aventador and regular oil, gearbox, clutch and brake fluid changes only really get done if the owner is driving their car regularly. I do betwen 2000 to 3000 miles between my V12 Lambos so for a 16 year old car, with 38,000 miles mostnof the hoses, and consumables will have been changed. I think you chose the “worst” example, but the collector market especially in Europe is based around the story of rhe car. Stay safe during the lockdown.

I know this is an old video but I disagree. It can be helpful to buy a car cheaper with problems. Say a car is 150k but you buy one, scraping by for 100k that has issues. You can look at that price difference as more of a pay as you go model, fixing issues when you have the money. You might not have that extra 50k up front for a good example so being able to fix over time could make more sense from a funding standpoint.

Disagree...You paid $30k too much for the initially. If you had paid $30k less, this video would have a different tone. If you had paid 30k less you would have used a better transport carrier and if right no new clutch needed. I acknowledge though that hope for only small issues when you buy a car like that. I’m 3 out of 4 on the good side. On my major miss I could have bought a newer version. Still fixing the old one though.
