    So the designers almost got it! Batman: The Animated Series is my favorite animated series of all time and that episode is actually one of my favorite ones. It's also a good introductory episode, IMO. I'll probably buy it just because of that. Fitting "shut the door" scene at the end - LOL!

    Of course, just like the show, a game is made for children but teaches them very adult stuff in a very kid-friendly way. I love this.

    I have some animated series playing cards from back in the day...I could probably modify them to work with this...

    Haven't this one, but just from watching the review, I wonder why the night phase doesn't have all the players play off the same poker hand. Seems like that would speed everything up.

    I actually got this game and played it the day it officially came out so I had to moderate, and I agree with Tom for the most part. Not until 1/2 through my second game did I get good enough during the "Blackout" phase where other players could not tell whether or not people were turning in cards. Honestly the moderator needs to be a really good shuffler and dealer in addition to good at remembering roles, but being a good storyteller is the least important requirement. I still haven't played as a non-moderator as I can't get another person with those qualifications.

    Wait a minute...
    Did Cryptozoic design a game that actually applies theme to the game rather than pasting it on a generic, watered-down version of a better game? Am I in the wacky universe?

      It's still a subpar cryptozic game

    It sounds like this game really needs an App where all players can do the Night Time phase at the same time on their phones.

    I love how at some point someone in a meeting must have said said: "Let's create a card game and get the Batman: The Animated Series licence for it!"
    What will they come up with next week? A roleplaying game based on Hercules & Xena? (Which was actually a thing in Germany, and yes, I own both of them.)
    Jokes aside, nice Idea, greatest animated Series ever next to Disney's Gargoyles for me.
    If this comes to Germany (which is probably very doubtful) I will certainly get it.

    I'm so glad I waited to watch this review before purchasing this game. Despite my love of the source material, as my wife and I were watching the review we both decided the game was not what we wanted and not for us. We watched the whole video in case Tom added something in his final thoughts that might sway our initial impression, but that was not the case.

    Seems like it would benefit from some house ruling. Like others said, make it more like real poker with everybody playing off of the same five open cards. This could also help a bit with the deduction since you know not only what others are picking up, but what they had to play from with the open cards. And while it may require some trust on the part of the people playing, get some tokens so you don't need a moderator to tell people what everyone did. Seems like you could get by with a few simple fixes that would make the game move faster and eliminate the need for a moderator.

    I feel like this could of been a better game as a story telling game where the villian explains how they almost got batman.

    • @dabearz27
      @dabearz27 Před 7 lety +1

      You'd think so, but do we really need more story telling games?

  • @dabearz27
    @dabearz27 Před 7 lety +3

    I understand your criticisms, Tom. This is definitely a fragile game that needs a moderator who knows what he's doing, but I had a lot of fun playing it, even as the moderator. The dealing out 5 cards to everyone at night is a bit cumbersome, but the rest of the game is fantastic. Games are usually over really quickly, the hidden roles are varied, and I love that the game actually ENCOURAGES discussion about who could be Batman. My only real problem with it is that if you get accused, all of a sudden your game becomes far less interesting. Unless you turn out to be Batman, and then it's over. I think you should have given this game more of a chance. Werewolf is ancient, at this point, and this plays far faster.

    Why deal 5 cards to each individual player one-by-one and not just one set of 5 open to the entire table?

    Batman The Animated Series is indeed the greatest animated series of all time.
    (fyi Avatar The Last Airbender is the second greatest).

    Any game that needs a moderator is an automatic pass for me. That being said it looks like more of the same from Cryptozic. A re-skin of another game with an awesome IP on it
