    I knew "Spiccoli" had come a long way and had grown into a very adroit and intelligent person since his debut in "Fast Times At Ridgemont High". But this performance on Bill Maher's program is the kind that you wish our leadership would display on the job. He displayed a very insightful and reasonable understanding of the forces at work inside the nation of Iran that are, quite frankly, mind blowing. Why the hell do none of those Senators (actually, this is a question I have of most government officials) sending that ridiculous letter not have a similar insight? I wonder how Mr. Penn was able to travel there and interact with enough people from all levels of Iranian society to glean that observation, but my previous question is SO IMPORTANT in regards to ours and I think the world's future, that I'm more interested in that answer. Awesome, Spiccoli! Totally Awesome! I'm now waiting for Judge Reinhold to make an appearance on this show and deliver some bombshell discovery he made about who really used those chemical weapons on civilians in Syria!

It just shows you how childish and utterly ridiculous the GOP has become. What I got out of that letter was that the current President is bad and the next President will be Republican so don't listen to what our current President says because we will nix it and do things our way.

      @wjpmitchell3 Před 8 lety

      +Insanicide13 Of course! How else are people going to make snap judgements and complete guesses as to where I stand on any one issue politically?
      My dream is that, one day, we will be able to enter our coordinates on a political plane into a computer. This computer will analyze the two contenders, and then call one of them an idiot, extend an arm to flick their genitalia, brand "MORON" on their forehead, and then a comically large boot will pop out behind them and kick them in the ass, propelling them into a pile of other political dunces, which will regularly be incinerated. The winner will progress to the next round, until we're left with only the superior ideology. This beacon of rightness will then rule over the world as he or she sees fit, with no plebeians left in the world to dissent against them.
      I feel this will really expedite the political internet debate experience. I think it's gonna be a real game changer.

    Calling the Senate a co-equal branch of government when it comes to negotiating treaties would be like allowing the President to spend money without congressional approval. The President is not co-equal with congress in some areas, and the congress/senate is not co-equal with the President in others.

    • @acouniha
      @acouniha Před 8 lety

      Terrible comparison. Obama's spent money without congressional approval to pass legislation through his use of Executive Order several times, which of course, costs money to implement.

    • @pdoylemi
      @pdoylemi Před 8 lety +2

      acouniha
      Actually, not true. The President cannot give an order for any agency to spend more than congress has budgeted for it. He can reallocate some discretionary funds within an agency to prioritize some things over others, but only if congress has not specifically designated the use for the money.
      And as for the Executive Orders myth that the right is pushing, you have to go back over 100 years, to President Grover Cleveland to find any President who has used them LESS than Obama. GW Bush was actually close, but still signed more per year than Obama, and Herbert Hoover signed nearly 8 times as many EOs per year than Obama has. Ronald Reagan averaged 50% more Executive Orders per year than Obama.

    • @PeterSpencer-rr4mc
      @PeterSpencer-rr4mc Před 8 lety

      +acouniha Obama has put in good service for America over 8 year, steadying the place up after the wholesale financial and military debacle of Bush/Cheney. I wish he had more of the mongrel in him though, and he had gone after them, scoured the statutes to find charges to lay against the 47 traitors. Even if he couldn't get them hung he could have smeared their Republican faces in a big bucket of shit. Modern Republicans have to be among the most loathsome people on the face of the earth

      Actually, next to Obama, GW Bush used executive orders less than anyone in recent times. The use of such orders has been steadily in decline since Hoover and Roosevelt who both issued over 200 per year on average, as compared to 36.4 per year for Bush and (so far) 33.4/yr for Obama.

    The way to beat evil is not by force but by living and behaving in a better way.
    Like we did with Soviet.
    We always had the moral highground during the coldwar.
    This changed things socially in Soviet and future politicians (Yeltsin) said enough is enough and dismantled the communist system.
    It is this social element, the iranian youth, we need to think about.
    Show them a better way and in 30years when one of them becomes a political leader things change.
    Or we can try the old route and embargo them like Cuba for some 60years and things will never change.

    As an Iranian with access to friends and family inside the country, I can tell you that the majority of the country, and overwhelming majority of youth despise this regime. When you see pro government rallies in Iran, it is mostly comprised of paid off poor people from the inner cities, villagers who are bused in from far away and the remaining individuals who in some way or form are earning their living through close association with the regime. The young people 35 and under, do not remember the revolution that their parent's generation totally bombed on, but rather have been brought up in the horrible environment left behind from it. Problem is, Iranian youth are not machine gun strapped vigilantes on the back of pick-up trucks ready to fight. They are very well informed, non violent progressive thinkers who want separation of church from state. Women outnumber men 2 to 1 at Tehran University. The government is scared shitless of Iranian women, hence the enforcement of Islamic law, dress code etc..Unfortunately, the government has the weapons and they rule with a strong arm. For now the youth will have to wait for the old clerics to die off, and that will take time.

    Iran is the most civilized and progressive country in the middle east. Iran in the context of this program only refers to the Iranian government, which is very distinct from the Iranian people, most of whom detest their brutal and repressive government. Even B Netanyanhu clearly distinguished between the two in his speech. They'd welcome action to help them kick out the mullahs....but sanctions only hurt them...not the rich mullahs. Go and see Iran once to know what it is about. Most Americans don't even know the difference between Iran and Iraq!
    The epicenter of terrorism is Pakistan...and when China gift wrapped nuclear weapons to Pakistan, America's conscience was deep asleep. This hyperbole around Iran is primarily to please Saudi Arabia (one of US' largest arms customers) and to keep the artificial threat of Iran alive. Why else would the Saudi's spend billions of dollars on American weapons? Who'd attack them? Who'd attack the house of terror?!

    Why does everyone forget that Iran took over British oil in Iran in 1951, Iran broke all contracts and took over the company; Britain's largest enterprise at the time.

    I knew I couldn't take it seriously when she said the legislative and executive branches were not co-equal branches of government. What an idiotic statement.

    A nod to Sean for mentioning that there is a difference between the executive branch and the house on foreign relations. Money interests direct the house, be it demos or reps. I expect the executive position to push for diplomacy over military actions.
    If the Republican party ever decides to "right size" the government by shrinking the military, I'll convert right now!

    I also point out I never said a derogatory remark against any President, whether its Barack Obama, or George Bush. Either way I have served both, and both have extremely hard decisions to make. They both have had decisions to make, that whether I agree or disagree, I do not see any of you volunteering to be under political scrutiny. At the end of the day, respect to those who have served whether politically or in the military. They both deserve the respect that they have to make decisions that most people are not willing to make. Both sacrifice, I could stand on the side lines and preach, but I took a stand and chose to serve. I could leave the military at anytime, but I believe in what I do and am proud of the time I have served for the past decade. At the end whether I agree with what my commander and chief chooses to send me to a country to fight, I choose to follow the oath I swore to. At the end of the day I choose to respect those who have served, whether political or in the military, and not take away from the sacrifices they make.

    As a species at the moment we are anything but moral and balanced , and this is a species wide problem not one of specific religions or populations or demographics . If we're going to be better , we have to ALL be working towards it together , at the same time .
