  • The convent of Santa Clara de Coimbra was founded in the early 14th century, on the left bank of the Mondego River. Saint Elizabeth of Aragon, Queen of Portugal, wife of Dinis of Portugal, was the main benefactor of the institution in its beginnings, having chosen it as the place of her burial. In the rich church in Maneirist style, the place of honor is the silver urn with crystal glasses containing the incorrupted body of Queen Saint Elizabeth, installed in 1696 and funded by the Bishop of Coimbra, D. Afonso de Castelo Branco. The original tomb, of Master Pero, in a single stone, was ordered by the queen herself; it is located in the low choir, where polychromatic wood panels tell the story of her life.
