OKAY, so how many of you have needed help with your window treatments?! 👋🏻👋🏻 I'm sharing my professional secrets to mastering drapery so you don't have to worry any longer!! 🙏🏻 Watch this video to learn the ins and outs of drapery design, various styles of drapery and why you'd select one style over another! 😍💕 This is part 1 of a full window treatment series, just for you!!! 👏🏻👏🏻 Hey guys! This video is SUPER MEATY!!!! Let me know in the comments below if you've still got questions, and we'll schedule a specific Q&A!!!!!
Waiting impatiently..😁😅😍
Thank you! I have seen privacy blinds in shops where you can see out, but you can't see in. They are very nice looking to. Can you cover where to find these?
Yes! Yes! Yes! I have a blank window in my kitchen and I am about to change all of the windows and sliding door in my house so this is right on time and I can't wait to hear your advice. Also, you wrapped in the sheets looks like you are filming a sexy scene in a music video. Get it, Girl!
Desperately!!!
@@jazze63 Here we goooo!! 🥰😍💕
I grew up knowing all the drapery terms because my mother managed the drapery department for a major retailer....good memories! Very comprehensive lesson....you are definitely one of the best decorating channels on CZcams!
Margaret!!! 🙌🏻 I'm so glad I could trigger those fun memories!! 🥰🌟 I LOVE that everything lined up with what your mother taught you - window treatments are a huge subject!! 💚 Thank you so much for this sweet comment, and have a fabulous rest of your Friday!! 🤩💙
Ditto. I have worked in Interior Design + Decor for many years (over 20) and this was, is an excellent overview, and that is saying a GREAT Deal bc DRAPERIES + Window Treatments is a HUGE, potentially COMPLEX and expensive category! As usual, you know your stuff!
Bravo.
This woman is so entertaining! Her energy & enthusiasm are infectious, the info she shares is valuable, and she has inspired even a decor Green Thumb and my 1977 Home Economics teacher's worst nightmare like me!
Wow!!
Oh my gosh!! Thank you so much, Joy! Appreciate this comment!! 💛
You're an excellent teacher! You're able to educate and inform the viewer with no decorating experience as well as the seasoned design professional. Great job and please keep it up.
You are so welcome!
I have never watched any of your videos before today and want to say what a fan of yours I have become. Your video on drapery was the most informative, educational and inspiring I have seen. A per peeve of mine is drapery that has pooled on the floor. Does anyone realize how dangerous it can be if someone's shoe get's caught in the fabric? Having the panel a fraction of an inch above the floor is beautiful and much more practical. I agree with your comments and have felt this way for many years. I don't see why more professionals don't stress this fact.
Valences = curtain bangs.
Fabulous analogy
Haha. Cute. I like that. We call a valance the covering hanging over the outside of a mattress. I think you call them bed skirts in the US.
That’s some deep wisdom right there

One thing to consider is that one well-dressed window can rival the cost of your sofa. And it will need to be taken down and professionally cleaned at least once a year.
Yes.. agreed. When you need to clean is a product of your location and the exposure to the outside. So, that is why everyone needs to consider cleaning as a consideration. 💕💕😘
Thank you…I’m a man and I am re decorating my home and just wanted to have and educated perspective on what I should be doing….You provided me with that…THANKS!!!
Classy lady. She never overtly puts down an individual’s style, but she does teach her style compassionately. I appreciate her advice and sophistication. Thanks Lisa.
Everything I needed-in minutes. You’re a genius, you know that right? Thanks!!!
Annie!!!! 🙌🏻 You are too sweet - I'm so glad I could help you out a little bit with drapery this week!!!! 💕🌟Thank you so much for your kind words, and hope you're having a FABULOUS Friday so far!!! 🤩💙
agreed! Just discovered Lisa Holt's channel and am ADDICTED!
I love that you talk fast - there is so much to watch, brevity is wonderful!
Lisa- your channel is pure education. I love that you get so excited at different styles and just appreciate beauty instead of constantly imposing a preferred style on your viewers. Your videos have been huge help as we gutted our entire 1860 farmhouse and put in everything brand new!
Thank you so much!!
Thank you for using the noun tense “drapery” instead of the verb tense “drapes” which often people say incorrectly! Excellent presentation!,
I noticed the same thing. A few years ago I checked because I thought drapery was incorrect. Drapery is CORRECT. Good job, Lisa.
Yasssss! 🙌🏻 “Drapes” - it’s a peeve of mine
Me too! Has driven me crazy for years. I’ve been an interior designer for 35 years so have corrected sooooo many people LOL, Lisa you really give excellent professional advice - thank you!
I was taught to avoid using "drapes" or "drapery," and to instead use "curtains." I often default to "panels" because I am afraid "curtains" confuses people who beleive whatever they read on the internet. Language does change but my English professors would be turning in their respective graves if I used "drapes" or even "drapery."
She's also the first person who has said "jabot" aloud that I've hear heard. 🤣🤣🤣
Tell us more about choosing fabrics for drapery. Thank you, Lisa
Yes PLEASE do , Lisa
Budget friendly for big windows...
And tall ceilings...
Yes, please, please give us some help choosing fabrics!
As much as I like the way drapes/curtains look...for me...they are dust collectors and more work than I want to do 😂 I'm shooting for bamboo blinds...simple and beautiful, warm and streamlined ☺️ Enjoy your videos!!
Dolores!! I totally get that!! 😂💕 In a couple of weeks I'm releasing part two of this series, all about shades, blinds, and shutters!!! 👍🏻Hopefully that will be a little more up your alley!! 🤩💚 Thank you so much for watching, and happy Wednesday! 💙🥰
@@LisaHoltDesign Can't wait!! Thank you!!
I feel like blinds get more dusty than drapery
I have had both and really prefer to dry clean my drapery than clean duaty blinds! 😁
That’s an interesting thought Dolores. I’ve had both. We had Venetian blinds when I grew up. They collect way more dust. Our curtain fabric doesn’t collect dust. It’s dense and has a sheen. I think you’ll find that it depends on the fabric.
It would be really interesting to see the same room with different window treatments applied. Love your channel!
Renana!! 🙌🏻 That's a fabulous idea - I'll totally add it to my list for this series!! 💙👍🏻 Thank you so much for tuning in this week, and hope you're having a fabulous Valentines Day!! 🥰💕
I would have really liked for you to address drapery for mid century modern, Scandinavian, Boho, and modern-ish Asian. What about these styles? Thanks for your amazing videos. ☺️
You are a no nonsense decorator that is straight forward without giving us “ the fluff”. Keep up the good work!!!
You have no idea how much this means to me Marshathe!! Thank you so much for this nice comment!! I love sharing the best design inspo for you guys while having FUN with it!! 💖🥰
@@LisaHoltDesign There are so many media interior decorators that encourage a fashion or trend, and forget to incorporate a ‘ curated touch ‘, to the chosen design. You ALWAYS encourage creativity and self expression. Well done Lisa! 🏆🏆🏆🏆
Getting those rods hung high was the biggest challenge I've faced in all my home renovations. Four drill bits later, and I'm still not sure if they will come crashing down.
After watching your videos about style types and now this series, my house has been telling me all sorts of things!!
Right now it is telling me that it wants ALL the draperies, the florals, pleats, brass fittings, holders with tassels, curtain bangs, silks, thermallining, heavy cotton velour, tulip shades AAND! IT MIGHT EVEN CONSIDER GETTING CROWN MOLDING!
and I just thought to get it short curtains i guess I will have to learn to sew drapes and shades now..
Thank you for the video and this whole series! Winter is fast approaching here in Denmark and our new house has a ton of small old windows, and it is seriously cold in the mornings! Well it is from 1858, so cannot be too mad at it 😆
I have made window treatments for over 20 homes (in the military, I moved alot) plus homes of my friends and neighbors. I have plenty of books on draperies. However, your video has suddenly made the types and styles of draperies incredibly clear and easy. I chose some incorrect styles in my last home and was confused as to how to correct them. Suddenly, I understand what I need to do! This is one of your best videos!
Jennifer!!! I am SO glad this was a helpful video, even to a window treatment expert like you!!! 🙌🏻💕 Draperies are a HUGE topic - I'm so glad I could help break it down for you guys!! 🤩 Thank you so much for this super sweet comment, and hope you're having a fabulous Monday night!! 🥰💙

Whoooooo, I love Lisa!
I live in very cold Melbourne Australia in a traditional house and need my drapes to function as thermal barriers, even thought it not my style I need full length to the floor, thermal lined with a pelmet to keep the draft out.
And then again in summer to keep the heat out! I associate really hot days with dark rooms :)
I think the pelmets are key to stopping the air flow. We have laid planks of vinyl flooring stuff over our curtain rods to stop the drafts without adding visual clutter
Can you break down design styles? I have such a hard time distinguishing certain ones.
I just spent 4 hours looking at drapes online, never had to buy them before. Sooo confused then I see THIS! Thank you so much!
YAYYY I am so happy this video was helpful for you!!! 🎉👏🏼 What a reliving feeling!!!
LOVE YOUR PERSONALITY LISA. My favourite thing, is that you are so down to earth, not showing any condescending, attitudes. So important for those who want some of those fabulous designs, but working with limited budgets.
What a lovely thing to say. Thank you ☺️
Please do shutters ASAP! Concerned about blackout possibilities.
Even the best shutters made will have light gaps. Interior mount (within the window well) not as many as exterior mount (on the molding or creating a molding in the construction of the shutter). They are most complicated to install and a professional measure and installation by the same person is going to be the best fit.
Thanks! Love the details. That thermal lining could be used here in FL. I have one room that has a thermal lining since it gets flooded with sunlight. Even with A/C, the sun can heat up a room something fierce. To help keep cooling costs down, linings make a difference. That's my experience anyway. Great informative video as always!
Thank you, for your tips. Stayed in a beach house that has creamy sheer drapes, that puddle on the floor when the windows are open a cool breeze causes them to billow in the wind. Dreamy effect
That sounds SOO dreamy Sophie!! 🤩 I can picture it now: it's a warm sunny day.. The sheer drapes moving with the soft breeze as you hear the waves moving.. SUCH a vibe!! ☀️🏝🌊 Now I want to go to the beach!! 🤣🤣
I have been manufacturing custom window coverings for over fourty years.I have worked with many designers over the years ,some not so good.Your video was very informative for people to understand how important window treatments are.Enjoy this very much
I always feel like I'm in school when I'm here. U made me reconsider my current drapery situation...now I know what makes sense and why.

Oh, Lisa, I just love you. You are so good at this. Thank you for sharing your talent with the world!
When we moved from NY to AZ I set aside about 5k just to do our window treatments. My husband had no idea what I was talking about. When we got here, all of the plantation blinds and fixed panels stayed!! I was thrilled, but mostly because I had NO IDEA what I was going to do. Your explanations here would have served me well, for sure!!

I love this topic!☺️ I just got done installing 15ft of hardware as a single continuous pole (I have three windows to cover). I was able to do it all for about $20. I combined two sets of IKEA of rods and it looks great! Now I need to go hem all my six set of panels.
Ooooh SO exciting!!! 🙌🏻 What a fabulous project AND a fabulous price! 👏🏻💙 Gotta love IKEA!!! 🥰Thanks for sharing your success with all of us, and hope you're having a fabulous Friday so far! 🤩💚
Wow, that sounds terrific!
That transitional couch looks like the Partridge Family bus!! I’m going to have to use an almost opaque sheer for our west facing picture window that looks out to the bay. Maybe put a layer of regular curtains in front on a double rod??
Excellent information. Her skills and knowledge is invaluable
I stoped here just to hear what you had to say. Once had curtains that once touched the floor. My baby and dog destroyed them. Never again my curtains are above the floor, about 8 inches. Kudos to you I could never be a designer. I hate people telling me how this or that looks best. I do what I like. So you are doing a great job for people who care about this.
Hi Lisa! Q & A please! How do I do a ceiling rod for a contempory look? Thanks for all you great advice & ideas!

OMG Cheryl!!! 🙌🏻 SO exciting - it's getting so close!! 😂💚 So glad this video was helpful - thank you so much for watching!! 🥰💙
Same for me!! So many choices!
Your advice is excellent. My mother made wedding gowns professionally for a major NYC department store and taught me to sew.
I made drapery. Beautiful drapery, if I do say so myself. When I sold my two previous homes, the new owners were so impressed with the custom drapes, they kept them and designed around them. One woman referred to them as the “crowning glory of the room”.
OMG M this sounds absolutely DREAMY - I can picture your custom drapery now!! 🤩👏🏻 What an incredible gift to be able to sew your own perfect window treatments...I'm a little bit jealous!! 😆🧡 Such a wonderful story - thank you so much for sharing!! 🥰💚
@@LisaHoltDesign - thank you fir your gracious reply. My mom instilled in me to sew neatly. Her gowns were so perfectly sewn, they could be worn inside out. My drapery was the same. As soon as you tell someone you “made the drapes” they immediately pick up the hem portion and turn it over. My drapery could be hung reversed, it was that neatly finished. My linings were matched perfectly. I particularly liked “puddling” because it was much easier than measuring for a precise length. Some fabrics stretch from being hung, so you must allow for that adjustment. Mom never used a pattern, she was schooled in draping the fabric.
I’m not that good, in sewing clothing, I need a pattern. The key to fabulous results is fabulous fabric. In NYC we’d get gorgeous material. It’s difficult in other areas. On line you can get beautiful fabric, but I like to feel it, hold it, see how it falls. You can’t do that over the Internet, even with a sample.
I love your channel. Hopefully you will inspire a new generation of sewing enthusiasts.
Yes our HOA makes us have white window coverings on the outside. Which can be hard to find other than blinds
Great to get out the message that contemporary does not have to mean bare windows. I know so many people who defend their lack of a window treatment by saying their taste is modern.
I’m great at choosing drapes. Hanging them up without a lot of swearing and extra holes in the walls is another story!
Also....the baseboard heaters in my home are a pain. I added snaps to mine and just have shorter curtains in winter. I don’t love it but.....it’s safe and it works ok.
L!! I love this idea!! 🙌🏻 What a fabulous solution!! 💚 Usually having heaters under the windows rule out drapery - but not for you! 👏🏻 Thank you so much for sharing, and hope you're having a fabulous weekend so far!! 💙🤩
@@LisaHoltDesign thank you! I shorten them to the window sill, so it looks more like a choice. I hate when drapes look like “high waters”!
Perfect timing on the window treatment video! My one son is finishing up a reno on a 1960 ranch home he purchased. The house has great 'bones' and he's done a fantastic job of updating. Now he's down to window treatments in his living room, master bedroom and guest room. And...of course, I get to help!!
Love your hardware advice, placement is key. Especially for creating a larger room look and feel. Thats something we try to tell our clients as well! Thank you for Sharing!

Just did my whole main floor in vertical blinds. They are mad by Hunter Douglas and mimic a drape. Vertical blinds covered by a thin netted fabric. Nothing looks cheap. Nothing is hard to use. Lighting options are fantastic. And I love shutters.
I love the hand movements

OMG thank you Olivia!!! 🥰 I have just the BEST time making these videos - I really have the best job ever!! 💚🌟 I'm always hoping that you guys can get some good info through all the fun!! 😆 What a sweet comment - thank you SO much for making my day!! 😘🌟
There aren’t many design topics where I just can’t for the life of me make a decision, but I tried to replace my drapery a year and a half ago, and I was so overwhelmed with the options that I just hung a million plants in all my windows and called it a day. 🤣
In our next place, I’ll know where to start!
LOL Michael!!! 🙌🏻 That's a pretty good solution - indoor plants are super in!! 😂💕 So glad I could clear a couple things up about drapery - definitely stay tuned for my part two all about shades, blinds, and shutters!! 👍🏻💚 Thank you so much for watching, and hope you're having a fabulous Wednesday night! 🥰
I can remember having balloon valances. I would stuff them with tissue paper. Now, I really like to have as much light coming through as possible with long shear draperies. My perfect house would have huge windows and a lovely view. I'm playing with getting golden rod velvet curtain for our bedroom. I definitely could hang the bedroom curtains higher.
OMG Marcia...thank you for that FABULOUS memory!! 💕👏🏻 SO fun!!! I'm SO in love with this look - bring on that yummy natural light!! 🤩☀️ Thank you for sharing this fabulous style with all of us, and thanks for watching!!! 🥰💙

Another comprehensive look at one aspect of design, and again the pictures illustrate exactly what you’re talking about. Great video! I am a window treatment junkie. All my windows have plantation shutters that guard against the hot sun of our climate, and fixed panels. I think of drapery as the eyebrows of a window....without them there had better be a fantastic view to compensate 😎. Thanks again for a great Friday video Lisa!
Great video and created an excitement in me to change up my drapery...which is heavily lined due to our freeze-your-bits off winters (-30 C tonigt/-22 F) 🥶🥶🥶.

This was a very easy to understand video which explains all the options to think about when choosing draperies. I thought this was very well done. It gives me confidence to make the correct decisions for draperies in my new home.

Oh yes! Love this video! Exactly the information we've been looking for ❤ Thank you Lisa!
Wow! Who knew there was so much to know about window treatments. I just came to figure out how to hang up drapes that have those old fashioned hooks stuck in them. I now know they’re triple pleated drapes with some weird hooks I don’t know what rod to use… Maybe you answer that in part two.
We've purchased our retirement home that has 2 Large Curved bay windows that face the street. Figuring the height from floor to top of window casing is 8-9'. Was thinking out of the box (before I saw this video of course) that I could take 1" PVC tubing that could curve into that space & use that as the curtain rod. But now I'm intrigued by the Ripple Fold track & wonder if they can be installed in a curve? Have to do my research, but you've got my creative juices flowing. Wish I could insert some pictures of these gorgeous bay windows.
I never thought I'd laugh during a window treatment video, but you manage to make it fun! Love your style. I learned a lot and was very thankful for the style recap a the end, after learning about all the details. Great content!

This video came at a perfect time as I'm now onto selecting draperies after I battled my painting dilemma. After painting some walls matte black in my rental, it looked great with some of my Restoration Hardware furniture that was also in a matte black finish. But something didnt feel quite right. After watching your video I relaized some of the mistakes I was making. Too many metals. I had chrome, wrought iron pieces and gold going on. I couldn't figure out how my former apartment with the same pieces now felt so out of place. Then your advice shed some light. Aside from too many metals, I realized the architectural feel was now a traditional backdrop in my 1920' s frech electic rental and not a new modern loft with concrete floors. I also had no framed pieces on the wall then and the walls and ceiling were matte white. The only gold were two gilded thai buddahs . I set forth and removed all the framed pieces and knew the black walls, despite how cool they looked, it needed to be floor and ceiling, and as much as I liked the looked, I prefered the minimalistic white walls. I customed matched the orginal paint but cooled it down to pair better with all the black; painting from floor and the ceiling. It worked!! I now have the modern minimal vibe from the apartment in my rental. I opted for 96" brushed cotton twill panels from RH, hoping this will provide some relief from all the sun but still feel modern and clean. So thank you 😊 for these amazing videos. I watched your video on rugs but how to choose the right shade of grey, is that something of a personal choice or are there tips in selecting the right one. I see a lot of rooms with all white walls and furniture like mine, but most are using light to medium solid grey rugs. I found a knotted wool rug thats more charcoal but worried it may weigh the room down with me ending up loosing that airy feel.
Are you reading my mind? I just purchased curtains for my mother’s new room at her assisted living facility and am hating that I had to get short ones because of the heating unit. I’ve been trying to find rods that will make it easier for her open and close them and never even thought of a pull rod. I’ve only ever seen those in hotels but given her mobility issues, that’s the perfect solution. 🥰🥰
Michelle!! 🙌🏻 I'm a big fan of the pull rod!! If it makes your life easier, then why not!! 👏🏻💖 So glad I could help you out with solutions for your moms space - thank you so much for this super sweet comment!! 🥰 Hope you guys are both having a fabulous week so far!! 🤩💙
You are so knowledgeable amd break things down to the basic level that is so easy to understand.ty

Thank you for the great info!
I would suggest a check list similar to what you've done in other videos since this is such a big topic frought with overwhelming details.
All the best, sincerely
Thank for sharing the different draperies for window treatments. Great job!
Of course Himaya!! Glad you could find some neat ideas to use drapery in your home!! 🥰
You are an inspiration. So many choices make drapery selection stressful... but in a good way. Thanks.
You are so welcome!
Hi Lisa, this topic is for me! We moved to a Bauhaus style house 1 1/2 years ago and I still can‘t figure out what drapery could fit in
Wow!!! Excellent!! This is the perfect video for you!! 🤩🤩 I hope you enjoy it!!
Thanks, Lisa. I'm saving this for when my son & daughter-in-law purchase their first home. Whilst renting, they haven't bothered to reflect on the impact all those details make to the finish of a room. Hubby & I have been living in our newly built home for almost 2 years and still haven't put up permanent drapery in any of the rooms! We have recently installed neutral honeycomb blinds but I am yet to convince him that hanging curtains close to the ceiling is the way to go :(
P!!! 🙌🏻 I'm so glad I could cover the first half of window treatment options for you and your son - it's a super dense topic!! 💕😂 I'll be releasing part two in just a couple of weeks all about shades, blinds, and shutters!!! 💚 Hopefully that will give your son and daughter-in-law plenty of options to choose from!! 🤩👍🏻 Thank you so much for watching, and hope you're having a fabulous Thursday! 💙
what a wonderful summary and overview. Thanks so much.
