Hey Rebecca, do us ALL a solid by telling the manufacturers of the world's curtains and drapes who sell stuff to Walmart and Target and TJMaxx and every other store that THE WORLD DOES NOT REVOLVE AROUND 84 INCH WINDOWS!!! I believe THAT is the real problem. No matter where I go, and I mean EVERYWHERE I go, all of the drapes and curtains are only 84" long. I know that's "industry standard" but they've got to stop thinking that all of us in customer land WANT 84" window treatments....I know I sure don't!! I have bypassed some really cute curtains strictly because they were only 84". Like you, I like to take mine up to the ceiling - including my shower curtain! - because it just makes it look better. For 8 foot ceilings folks, that's 96 inches, for 9 foot ceilings, it's 108 inches. Makes a world of difference!

You are absolutely right a 100%. But Rebecca has been given us a solution. Buy an extra panel and add a band to them. Is going to take time for the curtains industry to take a leap. A lot of people are used to the standard size.

Great teacher! I've made that mistake - buying a darker panel against a white wall. I thought it would look rich and tie in with other fabrics in the room - but it makes the whole room dark. I also like those short rods that go sides of window as then no one is opening/closing them. They're just for decor/adding softness to the window. The window itself needs a shade/blinds that actually function for light control...and in the south, we NEED light control during summer days!....so funny ...as I continued to watch ....you said exactly THAT! Love that you said...panels are for your WALLS...not your WINDOWS!!!!

Heat registers under window treatments are an issue here. The rising popularity of heat pumps has helped eliminate the use of baseboards under windows, which is great. Of course it created a whole 'nother problem with the indoor air handler units looking awful and breaking up the wall decor. Northerner problems. 😃 Enjoyed this video!

One of my main complaints about TV design shows, especially in the early days, were the skimpy cheap looking window treatments! Or no treatments at all! It hasn’t gotten much better, so it’s wonderful to see someone who is teaching others about the importance and benefits of proper window treatments!
My mom, a home economics teacher, let me contribute to the decorating of my room in our new home when I was eight. I choose lilac as the main color. We chose a pretty solid color bedspread, and managed to find fabric in 1 inch gingham checks which matched perfectly! This was used for the pinched pleat draperies which she made , and lined for stability, accent pillows, and as a skirt for her childhood desk, which became my dressing table. It was adorable, my favorite childhood bedroom, and done on budget! Even my much wealthier friends didn’t have rooms as cute as mine! This is when she taught me about “training” the pleats. You are the first designer/influencer I’ve seen who has mentioned this technique! It makes such a difference!
You would have liked what my mom did in their final home. My parents condo had a very large and long LR/DR with only one window, a slider, on the LR
end. She chose custom draperies made in pale blue silky slubbed fabric which were mounted on a simple brass contemporary rod placed at the ceiling, and the drapes went ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR! They covered the entire wall and looked very elegant at night when closed. During the day when opened, they fully stacked on both sides of the window, SYMETRICALLY! When we were dividing up my parent’s things, my siblings wanted to throw them out🤦🏼‍♀️😳, but I saved them, and hopefully will be able to use them in my next home, probably re-fashioned into panels. I’m very happy they’re so long!
I’m very happy to see that pinch pleated draperies are making a comeback, either as stationary panels, or full window coverings. Let’s hope that people follow your great advice on how to use and hang
them! They really do add the polish and finish to a great room!

That's awesome hon. Your mom sounds like she made a wonderful impact on your life and how you view design. My mother was much the same :-) I attribute so much of my design acumen to her keen eye and how she made my childhood home beautiful... with very little to work with!
Thanks for sharing your story my friend :-) RR

Often people forget the importance of drapery lining. I have always preferred neutral slubbed linen drapes that were lined. The added weight offers elegant draping, privacy and an element of insulation in cooler or hotter weather. Of course I think pinch pleated drapes never go out of style. Another secret to fine window treatment is the use of weights in the lining of the drape. Thank you for continuing to inspire indoor decor designing!

Rebecca you inspired me! I signed up for design sessions a couple years ago when I did a first pass update on my home and I put roller shades on all my windows and floor to ceiling curtains on the WALLS😂 I really enjoyed the look but I didn't have the funds to do a fuller more luxurious pleated curtain... and I never got around to hemming what I had so I had a puddle 😂 plus my kids had their hands all over the linen curtains making them quite wrinkled. Well. You inspired me to launder all my linens, and buy some luxurious triple pleated ones for my main living space, using the old ones to add fullness in my bedroom treatments since they are the same fabric and color. My home already looks so much better!! Curtains MAKE the room.

Rebecca, you are a recent discovery and I am having so much fun and learning a lot. However, you are commenting on the fact that windowtreatments are often too short. I apoligize upfront for sounding like a Suzy Homemaker but they catch dust and are a pain to hoover up. And a lot of people have a pet, those hairs are so tricky to remove from curtain hems. This way ( the too short way ) is so much
    faster and easier to clean.

I appreciate and agree with all your window treatment
ideas and comments. We have a large home with a generous size master bedroom. The bay window has lovely custom warm white sheer fabric blinds. As the room overlooks a nice pond, I have just allowed the blinds to be enough at the windows. There are no other windows in the room. As I am doing a few updates I would like to add stationary drapes and looking for the best way to accomplish that. And do I match the blinds or the walls (warm taupe) or…? I usually prefer neutral colors for things that have long life and pops of color with things that are more transient (pillows, decor etc,). Thank you very much for your suggestions! Joanie

You might also consider using a pointer (even a pencil) instead of your hands so we can see the areas you're pointing out. That's not a comment on your hands!, but is a comment on being able to see more of the image itself. You might also consider putting pieces of paper to cover areas you want our eyes to "disregard." I've always loved the "draw on the photos" technique, too. Thanks for bringing that back in a few cases. All very interesting...

I’ve had a window treatment book for over 15 years and that is not a new concept. But it is beautiful. I have to agree going to the ceiling with drapes, especially if you have high ceilings makes the room look elegant.❤

Great video! I love that you're brutally honest - there's no point in not being honest. We all need/want the help to understand what we can do to make our homes look nicer and I learned a lot from this video. I'm in the process of getting new curtains for my living and dining rooms so this was very timely. Thank you!

Great timing on your video about window treatments. Our living/dining room combo had to get new curtains since the ones that were up were disintegrating. That's from years of east west sun damage. I had the hardest time finding curtains that provided a tie in with my gold/beige-y furniture. White, black and black white combo curtains made my furniture look dirty. I finally found a white curtain shot with a gold/beige-y subtle pattern that works. Now I'm trying to tie in the black in the room. And yes, all of my curtains except for one room go to the ceiling. I have had shades, blinds, and vertical window covers. I much prefer functioning sun blocking and room darkening curtains. They really cut the heat gain in our rooms. I am okay if they don't look perfect all of the time. They do what I want and need them to do. I appreciate seeing examples and hearing how to correct so something looks better.
Linda -- not the Linda whose windows appear in this video😊

Dear Rebecca, Thank you 💕 for giving your fans the tips to improve and feel better about our homes. I keep learning and watch you in my little free time that I have. I live in a small old bone structure apartment in New York City and want to end this year feeling fabulous living in a modern decorated apartment within a budget.
    With much appreciation, 😊Pat.
PS: I started watching you since the Christmas Trees decorations videos and gift wrapping. Yea, Old fan.

Just discovered your site Rebecca. Love that you have actual photos that you can point out the mistakes and how to fix them! So many designers I see on CZcams have the camera basically focused on them and you see very little if not fleeting photos of the design. I will be tuning in for more tutorials!
