I was watching this and my 9 yr old son sat and started watching it with me. After watching we looked around and got to work. He was excited to help. We took 2 loads of old & dated “wall art” and kitchen cabinet top deco to Goodwill. Plus we have another carload to go also! We’re preparing to sell and move so we don’t need this clutter! Love the videos!!

I’m a sentimentalist. Every item has a story but I don’t like clutter. It stresses me out. So what I do is cycle my things. I take everything out of the space, open up my storage, and shop my own stuff to get a fresh look. That way I get to keep my things, feel fresh and uncluttered. Love your channel:)

The common conundrum for many older empty nesters is loving what we have without using everything we've sentimentally accumulated. Our former homes were family museums: space constraints dictated our decor choices in each subsequent move. Now we are in a small, open floor plan that doesn't lend itself to wall art except in the bedrooms. When extended family doesn't want what you're ready to move along, I use this simple formula: 1. Why am I not using this in my decor? 2. Would I be distraught if the item was destroyed in fire or flood? 3. Can I repurpose it? 4. Sell or donate: where do I want to put my time and effort??? Thank you, Rebecca, for reminding us that our homes should be refuges of peace. Blessings!

Why beat up on people who love and want to look at what they have. This is my beef with trends. They come and go. Life is short living up to other’s expectations is silly. When you go with designers you’re allowing another person to dictate your sentiments.

@@arielsea9087 People hire designers because they are frozen in terror of getting rid of their junk. If the designer says to do it, then you do it. Take the iron scroll wall hangings. The trend started with designers using beautiful iron salvage as art. Well that is expensive and difficult to source so every Kirkland, Hobby Lobby and Home Goods across the country started selling cheap imitations of the originals and then it took on a life of its own and they started making and selling cheap monstrosities or iron, faux wood that have nothing in common with the origin of that trend. Sometimes it takes a designer to come in and tell you to get rid of that stuff. If you bought a piece of iron salvage from an old Church that burned down in New Orleans it would still be stylish. But if you got your pieces at Hobby Lobby, Home Goods or Kirkland (the unholy trinity) it might take a Designer's voice of authority and reason to make you listen and get rid of it. Be it faux salvage, shabby chic, or my beloved Chinoiserie- it starts out with authentic design origins and then becomes a sad caricature of itself.

I don't think of this as decluttering. She is editing. "Decluttering" is getting rid of what Christopher Lowell used to call "room dander" i.e stuff that landed on a table, stacked against a well, or in a corner temporarily and then got overlooked and finally because background noise. That is easier than editing which is curating your decorative items. The electronic frame thing is all fine and good but your grand children don't walk in the room and feel honored either. It just isn't warm. Our television does the same thing and I do love it but I still like framed photos- in moderation.

LOVE this -- using real living rooms and teaching us how to remove items to make a room breathe serenity and peace, and updating as you go. As a painting major and art teacher, I pretty much know when too much is too much, but this will give me new eyes as I look at MY LR/den. We are trying to downsize because we are older and we took a carload FULL of stuff to my fall rummage sale at church. We will probably do the same thing again this March. We recently went through closet bins with old photos, scrapbooks and so forth. We got rid of a lot of junk we had saved for no real reason other than that we didn't "feel like" going through it. But as we put away our Christmas decor I thinned from three bins to two and then we attacked our closet bins. Prior to selling our previous home, I went through ALL our belongings twice. I am still getting rid of more. It seems like the first half of your life you accumulate stuff and the second half you spend getting rid of it. Just a warning to folks who are still in "collecting mode". Someday you will have to begin unloading possessions. Do not leave it all for your kids to go through once you have passed away. That is no gift to your kids, believe me. Start doling items out while you can. If they don't want your china or tools, donate or sell them.

There's a reason why they call it a BOOK case. It's not meant for accessories or knicknacks but books that aren't supposed to be color-coordinated decorative pieces. Books are meant for reading. The more books, the better. Just don't overclutter the shelves with everything but books.

You are amazing! Love that you started with the Iris Apfel maximal-era costume gag! So, you really hit upon something with this video for our household. We combined three households of different generations last year after a family medical crisis. We kept as much as we could in storage but ended up loading it into the garage to bring the rest of it back home. We need to downsize as we "shelter in place", so to speak. Now, every surface and shelf is over stuffed with things. Because my mother lost her ability to live alone and freedom of mobility, she wants to have as much stuff/memories around her to make her feel comfortable and like she is at home. But that makes the rest of the household cluttered, stressed out, and always feeling behind with chores. Constant redecorating, staging, and swapping of furntiure. We hesitate having guests and gatherings because it's kind of embarrassing and hard to navigate the spaces as if we were living in an antique shop! I'm definitely going to contact you for a one on one session, but I just wanted to suggest that more content and ideas about incorporating different family member's personal possessions, and level of taste, along with meeting the challenges of the space when universal design and life circumstances require that clients make do with the home and belongings they already have... Thanm you so much for your channel and advice and unbounded energy and ideas!🎉❤😊

  • @dwfaught
    @dwfaught Před 8 měsíci +35

Great video. I think people make three mistakes that lead to too much stuff: 1) Focusing on each wall instead of stepping back and seeing how the whole room works together. This is why there is something on every wall, even the little slivers between doors and windows. 2) Finding a formula that works in one place and repeating that to death everywhere. I can't tell you how many homes I've been in with lanterns all over or candlesticks on every surface (even when there is a lamp right there). Lamps also multiply like bunnies. If you can count beyond 3 for an item in a room, then you probably have too much of that one thing. 3) Not knowing about scale or how to hang art. A lot of decor stores sell little things so you buy 10 little things to fill up the space when 3 large pieces would be way better. I needed a large mirror recently and they don't sell them in stores anymore. You have to special order them now. Also, art hung on walls should be at eye level for a normal person (5'5"). Have you ever been to a gallery and seen art hung 2 inches from the ceiling? Of course not.

I agree with much of your list and while average sight lines make the most popular sense for the mistakes folks make when hanging art- please consider galleries absolutely do hang art with much care in salon style groupings on a wall. Not suggesting people go out and buy those teeny 15 piece matching frame kits and go bananas! But if you know what you're doing by eye, or grab a friend who does, you can create a beautiful grouping of pieces that feel eclectic but united in an area of your home. It is possible, maybe just tricky, definitely a learning curve if someone is unfamiliar ✌

@@suew4609 I agree about the lamps. I have never seen a room with too many lamps. Most rooms need more lamps and less overhead light.
Also art can be hung higher if one is doing a gallery wall. I love how Rita Konig hangs her gallery walls. I also love the way Kit Kemp hangs art. Like Konig and Kemp I am a Maximalist but I have still learned so much through Rebecca especially on lighting. I did her design series years before Kinwoven. I might go back and join again and she what else she has added to the syllabus. I took Konig's online class too and learned a lot from her too. Her approach is all about comfort. Her style matches my own more than Rebecca's. Most CZcams decorators are one trick ponies and they do the same thing everywhere they go. But Rebecca has real vision and she is an excellent teacher.

@@teelakovacs208 I couldn't agree more. There is much more to hanging art than line of sight. I love gallery walls. Even if you don't have an eye or a friend who does there are some tricks to help make it easier. I lay things out on the floor first and take a photo and then put it on the wall. But there are other ways to do it including cutting out paper the same size as your art and taping up the paper first.

What I do and what I suggest to others who like decor but not "clutter" is... Change it up often. Decorate for each season (not holiday so much) for example. So for fall I take down everything and redecorate with different curtains, art, etc. I have specific fall/winter/spring/summer type colors, textures, art, ect. This way I can have all the things I love but by changing my home around often I don't have to "get rid of". I'm obviously not a minimalist at all. I do not like blank space but appreciate a relaxing space that isn't crazy busy. This is just an idea/suggestion to those, like me, who love their "stuff" or have a lot of different styles and a way to make it work.

I have never been sentimental? Why ? I also grew to hate photos of family in the house , lol I haven't put any out in many years , not even kids school photos ! I mean I see my kids back then ! They are gone now . I still no photos , 2 in my closet ! Where I keep a storage shelf , cause I feel I must . I love empty space now . Use to be a little clutter , never major clutter except a storage shed , I was glad it flooded, video tapes of kids , but I didn't need all that crap . I stored it ! That was my 20s . I'm 46 today . Moved 2 yrs ago so , it was time to do even more ! I love less , my rooms are so big looking ! I made upstairs a master suite, 2 rooms 1. 1.5 bat's 2 large bedrooms . I made a living room. Bedroom , they are straight across . I love it I lived with a second bedroom empty for a yr . I do my hair in small bath there . Now I put 2 futons , together a couch and slid the 2nd one up folded out ! Giant couch! Put tv , 2 tables and my mid century rocker ! It's great .

The most important feature in your home is the SPACE between your objects. The lovely “voids” that relax the eye before it’s drawn to a fabulous, considered piece of furniture or art that you have. You can only successfully redo a room if you take every last mortal thing out first, gradually putting a single thing back, one at a time, this makes you truly see what is fab vs what is DRAB! 😂❤

Girl .. I just fell madly in love with you! ❤ NOT ONCE did you use that despicable overused word 'declutter' .. thank you thank you .. "purge" and "thin it out" are so refreshing to hear. Seems like EVERYBODY has jumped onto the 'declutter' bandwagon and have beaten that poor horse to death, and many of them don't even realize they are using the word improperly. Decluttering means moving items that are out of place and putting them back where they belong (dirty dishes to the dishwasher, food wrappers into the trash, clean laundry piled on the bed or sofa put away .. things that are making our tidy homes less than tidy).
Removing too much stuff as you are explaining it here is PURGING.
