    BIG WARNING TO EVERYONE WITH A LEFT HAND DRIVE!!!
    It's not as easy to put the gearbox to the side, because the steering shaft is in the way. You have to lower the whole subframe and even then I was only able to get 10cm between the engine and the gearbox. It sucks, but it's possible.
    Took me about 16h for an LHD vehicle. (No impact wrench, mostly alone (needed help from time to time to press the brake etc) and no experience on cars (I'm a toolmaker))
    Otherwise brilliant camera work! Thank you for this tutorial.

    • @turbotown
      @turbotown Před 2 lety

      Thanks for the comment. I am working on a LHD right now. I was wondering, why there is not enough space to move the gearbox aside. Do I have to diconnect more engine parts, like the exhaust? Maybe the engine mounts?

    • @milchsteak3276
      @milchsteak3276 Před 2 lety +1

      @@turbotown No engine parts have to be disconnected. I just took every screw, that's holding the subframe, out. (4 big screws, two in the front and those along the steering mechanism. That's all what I remember after half a year)
      You have to support the subframe, so it doesn't fall all the way down.
      Get the frame as low as possible and then try to rotate the gearbox untill you find a position where you can get maybe 10 or 15cm between the engine and gearbox.

    Hi, I had to change my clutch, and this video was just great!! I have a 2006 Caravelle, and the old flywheel just fell apart. Your video was just incredible detailed, and I am sure you saved me for 2 extra days of work. The video just covers everything!! You have all my respect as I see that you are doing this for a living, this is hard work! Again thank you for this video, regards from Norway.

    Thanks alot my friend.... This video made things much easier..... Followed every step..... Couldnt get the balljoints to drop and didnt have the patience , so i just loosened the whole control arm to get the CV joints out..... Wasnt sure why u drained the gearbox oil.... Thought it would leak through the CVs but its good thing cause i noticed the oil was dark and very thin already.... So replacing with new oil..... Stripped yesterday so today i will put gearbox back.... Keep up the good work.... Nice detailed video 🎉

    Watched this video a couple of times and today I removed my gearbox to swap the clutch release bearing as it was noisy .
    Your footage is spot on and I wouldn’t have attempted it without this.
    Gearbox was stubborn lining up going back in but I preserved and all good.
    Panicked when clutch pedal fell to floor but pumped up .
    All good and no noisy bearing .
    Thank you for an amazing video …

    Just did this for my T5 using your video as guide, way better than using a manual with pixelated or grease-stained pictures. Only difference was some DPF mounting on the gearbox, but it was easy enough to get to. Also used a Sachs instead of a Luk, I know they're are said to be a smoother ride, but so far so good. Really appreciate your channel, and you sharing your skills and experience.

    The "new" Dewalt DCF891 looks to be a beast of a compact Impact Kevin - your gun looks as knackered as mine - it's meant to be a lot lighter & a lot faster. I'm going seek one out this week - lighter is always better. My Dewalt is so tired, the front bearing is now wobbling from the years of abuse, it works, but it's knackered by normal standards.
    Proper Vid. as always.

      @@WMCS I'm in Liverpool, We had the clutch done in a place called Hindley which is not far outside of Liverpool, Near wigan. I wasn't happy about them driving the car there from my place because the car wouldn't drive, as far I was concerned.
      The smell from the clutch burning didn't leave the car for weeks after.
      It's been O.K since, well until after I had to replace the clutch slave and master cylinder a few weeks ago.
      I hope it carries on as is for a while yet?

    Brilliantly made video. Have done a few golfs and skodas but need to do my T5 soon as its starting to slip in 5th gear.
    Dude, I love your technique but you've got to find a better way of lifting those boxes than bench pressing them😅😅 Gonna catch up with you sooner or later.
    Cool to see you dont need to drop the box right to the floor on the T5.
    Just to confirm, did you just lower the subframe on the one side of the van?
    Thanks again

    Great visuals. Just spent a few days doing; check CV joints, replace split CV boots, replace one drive shaft, and check notorious splines on my own same vehicle. Now done - using axle stands similar to your set up. So I appreciate what you can do so seemingly effortlessly. It's was a core muscle tone up for me for sure.
    I found those M8 half-shaft support bearing bolts go into some weak old alloy - one stripped so I bolted straight through. The other had a Screw Thread Insert(STI).
    Why don't VW just put STI at the start? Seems easy.
    Not used a rattle gun yet (old guy here) , but how do you control torque with that thing? The different need of a hub nut(200Nm) and those half shaft bolts(25Nm) - big difference.

    • @WMCS
      @WMCS  Před 3 lety

      That’s great you managed it all. My impact gun’s range is from 60-1200nm.
      So it’s important to know the impact point for each nuts and bolts.

    Them VW transporters can be a nightmare at the best of times, never mind doing a clutch and flywheel ON YOUR BACK, tell you something, You have my respect. I found these difficult even with the luxury of a ramp especially when you've to cut flywheels out 🙊🙉🙈

      @@WMCS i remember the first time we did a clutch, flywheel and gearbox replacement on a T4 Transporter 2.5l diesel. Took us 6 hours to remove the subframe as the tortion bar adjustment nuts were siezed and could not be heated due to being located next to the tank, so after 6 hours of muttering ffs's and breaking 2 22mm sockets we eventually got the subframe out, replacing the clutch, flywheel and the concentric slave cylinder went ok until we fitted the gearbox, we discovered that the old gearbox had reverse beside 5th and the replacement gearbox had reverse beside 1st, after some faffing around we were able to work out that a pin on the gear selector could be held in place with a little tack weld, worked fine but was really easy to put in reverse rather than 1st but we got there in the end (customer didn't want to replace the gearstick and linkages) so that was our little 'haphazard' way around it. Good times, and what's even better is that we could've saved 6 hours as the subframe didn't have to even be touched, turns out you push the engine forward after disconnecting the rear mount and shove a foot long piece of wood against the subframe and sump of the engine and wiggle the gearbox out 😂😂😂
      Edit: found out that the subframe didn't have to be removed after doing this job on four T4 transporters

    When u stick the bell housing of the gear box back on, can you tell easily if the axle has slipped back in ok? Can you feel it mate properly? Also, if you want to remove the gear box, can get away with just taking out 2 of the U-carrier bolts, or would u have to drop the U carrier from the other side a bit? (Vw says to remove completely)..

    Great vlogs on the T5 clutch change. I have a Euro5 T6. Is it always necessary to change the flywheel along with the clutch or just good practice? Yes with the thrust bearing but it's a long long time since I changed any clutches, probably a Mini in the 70s.

    • @WMCS
      @WMCS  Před 3 lety

      Hi Brian. Definitely change the flywheel as it is the main issue that causes the clutch to slip. Hope the video comes through for you.
