A short interview with Marvin Hagler and Tony Sibson regarding the signing of their fight. The great Reg Gutteridge is the man in between the two..rather him than me.
Call me an old dude at 51 but I like this type of pre fight as opposed to the loudmouth bluster and BS that we see today... This was classy all the way.
@@TBWSportI absolutely agree. Plus Tony Sibson was a very tough, strong fighter with a ferocious left hook. Rip to Marvelous Marvin and my sympathies to his family.
This brings a tear to my eye, the greats Marvin Hagler and Reg Gutteridge, two legends no longer with us. Also the mutual respect and courtesy between the two boxers. This is how things should be before fights. All that fake bluster and aggression we see today in front of the cameras is an absolute joke. It makes me cringe.
After the fight,Hagler said to the Announcer he beat a hell of a fighter in Tony Sibson and neither one of them are given credit for being who they are.
Sibson was an honest fighter. He fell short of Hagler's ability but then again, who didn't. Sibson took his loss with pure class, Saying he was in the best shape of his life and trained like an animal for Hagler but still was given a lesson..that was Sibson's own words. Quality stuff.
Compared to the cheap insults that get showen nowadays in interviews i much prefer this when it was honourable and men were men and had respect for each other 💪
Two GREAT sportsmen! THIS is what sport is about- mutual respect between opponents- no trash talk, just straight honest talk. I don't blame Marvin for his reservations about returning to the UK to box. He was treated appallingly by a small number of thugs in the audience. Marvin beat Minter fair and square, deserved the win, and some people abused him. I was nine years old when I watched Marvin destroy Minter. I watched the fight with my father, he was appalled by the antics and abuse that occurred that night. It was most unbecoming and not reflective of British sporting values- the best man won fair and square, and Marvin was denied his moment of victory.
Yes, I agree, there was no trash talking then, these guys handled themselves out of the ring, as well as inside. Much better boxers then, none of these gaudy trunks down past their knees, no stupid build up music, just boxing, and good boxing and boxers! Tony Sibson a good fighter, Marvin Hagler, he was something else!
If ever two fighters went into and left a ring like men it was these two. There seemed to be a natural empathy between them and I believe they remained friends until Marvin's passing.
It was and is, I agree. Minter "fans" believed Hagler caused the cuts mainly through use of the head.. What nonsense.. Hagler destroyed Minter with the accuracy he would later show against Sibson. For me Hagler was the greatest Middleweight in History including Monzon. I am a big fan of Leonard too but with all of the concessions Hagler had to give him and the 20 second burst at the end of each round Leonard pick-pocketed that victory.. Just my opinion of course. RIP MMH
@@TBWSport Hi, thank you very much for the reply. I agree of course about Minter, the film clearly shows doesn't it that it was Marvin's punching that did the damage. As for the Leonard fight, the only reservation I've got is that I read recently that Ray actually landed more punches, which amazed me! Of course it's not just a punch-count, the bursts you mention were, at their level, just pats, but nevertheless they did hit their targets. Of course Marvin's punches were much harder, but so many missed. I watched the whole fight again very recently, and after decades of believing Marvin won, I now think a draw would have been fair, enabling, of course, Marvin to retain his title. To give a win to Leonard was so wrong. Marvin said, in the ring immediately after the verdict, 'I told you about Vegas'. (And of course Marvin would almost certainly have won if it had been 15 rounds, or with a smaller ring.)
@@ysgol3 I think a draw would have been fair. I think Marvin wanted to show Leonard that he could take whatever he had.. He started slowly almost in contempt of Leonard. I don't think Hagler was ready for just how slippery Leonard could be.. He must have thought he would catch up to Leonard sooner or later.. That never happened. Technically Sugar Ray may have landed more punches but most were flurries with not much behind them, hence my pick pocket claim.. but Yes Technically that would make him the winner.. I am not sure I agree with the land light and get away tactic and certainly not to dethrone a great champion. Nevertheless Hagler has gone down in History as one of the greats regardless of the result.
Most definitely, it was a racially charged night nothing to do with cuts or how Hagler fought. Hagler destroyed Minter, I’ve read that by the time Minter got to the dressing room, his eye was on his cheek.
28yrs old and look how Marvin was dressed, spoke and carried himself!!! We gata get back to this, making mature and speaking/acting like you got some sense the “cool” thing to do!!!
It brings a tear to my eye watching Marvin & Tony show so much respect. Hagler remains my favourite fighter of all time. The fact that Sen. Ted Kennedy had to intervene to get him his title shot was outrageous. These were two tough men who let their fists do the talking.
Sibbo giving respect and Sibbo getting respect in return. Watching this after so many years in a OK ish looking hotel and you forget that Hagler was the man that beat the great Hearns and Duran and Sibbo fought him at his peak and gave him a great fight. What a great era in boxing, I would say the best.
You are welcome. "Sibbo" was a decent fighter with a fair dig on him, but Hagler was a class apart. For me Hagler was the best middleweight of them all (including Monzon) Sibson couldn't get out of the way.. Hagler was a master boxer who didn't waste a punch. Sibson gave Marvin full credit with no excuses.
Yes... It was his most sharp performance I'd say. Hagler was just so on point in that performance. However let's not take away from Mr. Simpson .. He was a good bruiser and just an 'A Class' individual. The sport needs more attitude like Tony Simpson had.
I guess Marvin's best performance was the Tommy Hearns fight; certainly his most exciting. Tony Sibson was a top European fighter, but, the truth is, every time he stepped up to world level, he lost: Marvin Hagler, Frank Tate, and Dennis Andries. A really tough man, who didn't quite have the skills to mix it up with the elite guys. Marvin passed way too young - it must have been something genetic, as he was a very fit man. RIP champ - one of the best middleweights in boxing history.@@IanBillen
@@markdoughty8780 Hearns Hagler was epic. Round One (nuff said on that ha). The middle weight division during the 1980's was brutal. Where those contenders lacked in skill they made up for in ruggedness and will. Several would have been champs if Hagler would not have been there.
How classy was Marvins response to the abuse he took inthe ring after the Minter fight, people nowadays could learn a lot from Marvelous Marvin Hagler RIP Champ
Lovely to see the great Reg Gutteridge hosting. Funny stories involving Reg who came from a boxing family. Gutteridge never turned pro because he sadly lost one of his legs in a landmine blast. Years later Reg when at the beach would hide his prosthetic leg, enter the water, then he'd shout shark as he hopped back to the beach. When with Muhammad Ali at a fancy awards dinner, Reg would tell his dinner companions that he was the toughest man there and to their shock would promptly slam a steak knife into his leg, of course it as his prosthetic leg.
Marvin took the long road to the title. Should have had his crowning glory agaist Artofurmo but didn't get the decision then finally he beats Minter in London and the only image he has is being bundled out of the arena. Marvins career was full of unfortunate episodes and regret.
I can vividly remember the utter disgrace and shame that the english boxing fans displayed the night Marvin beat Minter. Nobody could blame him if he point blank refused to to fight in the UK again. Regarding if Tony would fight Marvin in may be the US or elsewhere? That really was a stupid question. Marvin is the Champ and holds the title. HE decides where he will fight Tony NOT the other way around and just like Tony admitted here, he said he would fight Marvin anywhere he wishes. Respect to BOTH fighters for NOT spurting what we know have come acustomed to the verbal trash talk. RIP champ.
I agree Sean. We were lucky to be around to watch this era along with the hype and build up. With a few exceptions it isn't the same today. What a great time the 60's 70's and 80's were for boxing.
