- Former IBF, WBC and WBA world champion Marvelous Marvin Hagler recalls his famous fight with Thomas Hearns and criticises modern day boxers for being too money orientated.
Hagler was speaking at the Laureus World Sports Awards in Malaysia. - Sport
He won that fight with Leonard. I said it then, I say it now, and I'll keep saying it. Marvelous Marvin Hagler won the fight with Sugar Ray Leonard.

What's fucked up is he boxed against politics his whole career because it wasn't quote on quote scripted for him to succeed only the more decorated one sugar ray, however they couldn't comprehend his greatness because they already wanted their golden boy to be praised which is sugar ray. Sugar Ray knew he couldn't go his whole career ducking this man so politics was behind him once he accepted that fight. In my eyes no lie marvelous is undefeated as far as record they hated on his greatness they hated that he was fearless. He went toe to toe against the best in their prime no politics. That's why he is the greatest middleweight EVER over anyone.

@@jaime8318 No she didn't, the news said that which is the government, Tommy Hearns who I know and trust said when he heard Marvin was in hospital, he called the family he has their number we don't or the news. He said he was told before Marvin died that he had complications from the vaccine...in just 4 hours after taking it, he also said Marvin should recover and pray for him...why would he say that they were friends?

owen O'Neill Ali could also withstand big punchers better than any fighter I've ever seen. He dealt with murderous punchers like Frazier, Cleveland Williams, Shavers, and Foreman. Remember, he didn't run in the least vs. George. In fact, was flatfooted against the ropes and covering up. There isn't another fighter in boxing history who could have pulled that off against George other than Ali. The man could absorb devestating punches in an unbelievable fashion.
Beware Of The Austro Kraut If you believe Ali beat George because of loose ropes, that is a very interesting perspective. Muhammad had always used the ropes as his tactic, even during the first bout with Frazier. That was a resting tool for him and he was able to cover and withstand big punches. Even if the ropes were tightened Foreman wasn't going to beat Ali. Muhammad was a much better fighter than George and the power shots from George weren't going to devastate him. Power was never enough to defeat Ali.

He winked near the end of one his answers to signify the end of the interview, but clearly too well mannered a person to just ignore the question and say he has to leave. Boxers like Marvin really give a positive image of the entire sport.

I met MM Hagler & his 2 trainers briefly, in HIS warm-up room at 12 yrs old w/ my younger brother 8 & my father (a former,retired RI pro fighter himself), this was literally within 60 mins of Hagler entering the ring to DEFENDING his undisputed middleweight championship vs Wilfred Scypion in Providence, Rhode island...on HBO main event fight.
I have polaroid to prove* it, signed autograph also of course.... Hagler, did NOT have to even give us 5secs of HIS time, BUT GIVE US 2 valuable mins of his time*ESPECIALLY in such a intense limited time he had ATM for his bread-&-butter title'bout, the future of himself & his family @ STAKE, his job in which, he had trained for up 4 months up into this fight & again Marvelous Marvin acknowledged & appreciated me,bro& father, HIS*many fan base!

The picture of an eye he didn't fight in the amateurs as a child he started boxing after 20 years old so he didn't get hit his entire child hood like most boxers that's why his speech is so good. Bernard Hopkins also didn't start until 19 years old which is why his body was able to last so long into his 50's and also still has good speech.

I don't know which way the fight would've gone had it not happened, they were both great Middleweights, but Hearns breaking his hand and becoming a 1handed fighter is the reason Hagler was able to end when he did.

I met him when I driving for Strawberries record stores. I was at the Brockton store. There was a" Closed for 20 minutes" sign on the door. I knocked and got the managers attention. I brought in my first load. I asked why he was closed. He pointed to a man and his kids towards the middle of the store. "I give Marvin and his kids some quiet time when he comes in. He's got special order pieces in today's delivery". He was just being a Dad out with his kids. I hurried to get everything in. No boxes are marked as special so his order could be in any box. Finished up and hung out. The other people in the store also respected Mr. Hagler and his kids. The manager walked over to Mr. Hagler and asked if they were ready. He mentioned his order was at the register. Signed autograph for a couple of kids before he left. The manager said "Marvin, My driver's a big fan also". He had his hands full but gave me a genuine "Thanks" as he and the kids left. A Dad spending time with his kids.
More boxers really need to take note from fighters like Hagler who leave the ring "prematurely." You can tell just by this interview that he left at the right time. He's still sharp and has his health. You see some of these other fighters and it's really sad the state that they're in.
Michael Faber agreed, I see fighters even from his era, and they sound punch drunk, I heard guys like Leonard really declined considerably and have slurred speaches.

Mr Hagler in my opinion (not that it counts for much) is the best middleweight fighter I have ever seen. I would put him up against any middleweight/super middleweight fighter in the past 30 years and my money would be on Hagler. I look back to the era when Hagler boxed and the boxers who fought at that time. They would have fought anyone to PROVE they where the best. Not like today, money talks and avoiding a challenge is in there best interest. Thank you Mr Hagler for the fantastic memories and I take great pleasure in watching your fights regularly on you tube.

Grew up in Boston listening to the Sunday night "Sports Huddle" with Eddie, Mark, and Jim. They would often have Marvin on as a guest - and he would stay on for several hours, chatting and taking calls. Marvin must have been about 24 at the time...from across town in Brockton, Mass. Always ALWAYS came off as a stand-up, polite, decent man. We all loved being witness to his rise to fame and fortune. If anyone deserved it, it was Marvin. Stunned and saddened that he passed so young. But he will live on in my memory vividly, as long as I breathe...RIP, Champ.

I can't really remember hagler in real trouble in any of his fights and I think that says alot when you consider a power puncher sometimes might get caught with one because he's loading up on his punch and he's open to getting hit somewhere. Like that "1" moment hearns stunned him for a brief moment. One of the most mentally tough fighters ever.
What a truly wonderful and lovely fella he was. So sad he has passed away. Marvelous Marvin haggler may now be gone...but he will live on in the hearts of those who watched and appreciated him and his fights and his heart will live on in film forever.

Don't sell him short though. That man was incredibly skilled and had a monster ring IQ. Too often he gets sold as a bulldog and missile but this man had incredible footwork, timing, generalship and a sense of timing near second to none.

That was one of the most brutal fights I've ever saw... I don't know how Hagler can even speak clearly after some of them wars. I seen the punches that Hagler and Mugabi traded... 99% of the middleweight divisions would have been knocked out cold. GGG & Bhop would have been the only two in recent memory that could take what they were dishing out.

Whose the last great fighter who could say they beat arguably three of the 10 best fighters of their generation (yeah, I think he beat Leonard)? Hagler. The man remains CRIMINALLY underrated. The single best 'lunch pail' fighter of my lifetime.

Marvin Hagler avenged all his draws,and losses with the exception when he was robbed from Milk & Cookies Flashy Show Boater SRL. Hagler never knocked down in his career. Even when he fought Juan Roldan, that was a complete slip,and light knudge on the behalf of Roldan. Hagler was a complete hardcore fighter. Great chin,and punching power for a Middleweight. Amberdexterious favoring the Sothpa stance of course. Marvin was able to adapt to any style in which this gave him the upper advantage against punchers, boxers, and speed demons. Hagler dictated the pace of every fight,and he had great ring general ship second to none. I remember seeing him in an interview before he fought Hearns. Hagler said if he gets through Tommy's best punch, he then knew he would have Hearns licked. In which he did. Hearns delivered that wicked right cross that would flatten 9 out of every 10 opponents. Hearns wobbled Hagler,and managed to give Marvin a nasty gash that would make others quit on their stool, but The Marvelous One as usual was able to overcome the Hitmans punching power,and comeback to conquer Hearns. And when Marvin battled The Hands Of Stone. They fought a full 15 Rounds. In this fight The Marvelous One used his wits,and outclassed Duran to retain the Middleweight championship. And a great performance from Duran too. And also a great performance on the behalf of Hearns for giving us boxing fans the best 8 1/2 grueling minutes in 1985,and perhaps the best exciting fight in the decade of the 1980s! Indeed I tip my hat to The Man, The Myth, The Marvelous One!

The Marvellous one is one of my boxing heroes. The working man personified. The hardest geezer of his generation. And as skilled as they come. I can't imagine a Middleweight born who could have beaten him.
Great champion, no regrets and nothing to regret either. He was never loved in his career, maybe he was too much of a fighter and not enough of an entertainer. Even to this day the public can forget the last fight or two of every champion except him. But he made his money, he beat everyone that wanted to fight him and now he still has his health and his loyal fans and the future to look forward to. Godspeed Marvin, there is no middleweight who could have ever gotten past you at your best

Hagler came up the hard way. He didn't have the push of an olympic medal behind him like Leonard did (no disrespect to Leonard) so he had to battle his way through the trenches and take on tough, dangerous fights early in his career to build a name for himself.He and Leonard fought for their first world titles on the same day, and he got robbed blind against Antifourmo ( sorry I know I spelled that wrong). He was considered the uncrowned middleweight champ for while before he confirmed it with his destruction of Alan Mintor. Hagler is a living legend.

Marvin always looked like granite when i watched him in the 80's never looked hurt or shook up in any way...respect to literally one of the greatest and most humble fighters of all time...

I viewed many of his fights and always RESPECTED him for his talents, sportsmanship, and professional manner, in and out of the ring!! He's still in GREAT SHAPE and still as HUMBLE and POSITIVE as ever!! As far as I'm concerned, he beat Leonard that day!! Those were the GOLDEN days of boxing!! I wish you GREAT HEALTH AND HAPPINESS, MR. HAGLER!! YOU'RE A CHAMPION BOTH IN AND OUT OF THE RING!!!
I loved watching Marvin fight.....what a tactician.....he would work other fighter and just 'break them down" by the 5th-6th round you could tell the end was near. One thing about almost all of Haglers opponents was this: Almost everyone he fought was never the same afterwards fighting-wise.....Their careers just went south after Hagler...virtually every single one he fought after that first Antofermo fight....
Also no fighter ever beat marvelous Marvin in a rematch sure Hagler lost to Monroe & possibly Watts
but in a rematch, MARVELOUS destroyed them and MOST* who had been beaten the 1st time by Hagler did NOT* what a return.
Sugar Ray Seales, ANTEFURMO, HAMSHO and Oblergines..all BRAVE , VERY TOUGH BOXERS ..BUT were obviously soundly beaten 2 times worse in rematch.
Leonard took on Hagler, and was the better boxer. Leonard was the best
welterweight to ever step into a boxing ring. He also could fight middleweight,
as he did against Hagler, and beat him. If there would have been a rematch,
the result would have been the same.

A legend and was a joy to watch. One of my favorites. I was on line to receive the Covid vaccination when I looked at my phone and saw the news of his passing. He appeared fit and healthy from the recent photos I had seen. Sad and shocking news. RIP. You will be long remembered by us fans.
Marvelous Marvin was great. Seems to me he was like a wrestler, though: never broke character. I can't remember seeing him smile while he was an active fighter but, now he's retired, he does nothing but smile! Great to see him happy and healthy. What a warrior!
Greatest middleweight of all time, a true warrior, in every sense of the word. No other fighter could have survived the onslaught that Tommy Hearns threw at him, a lesser man would have been kayoed. Truly robbed against Sugar Ray Leonard. What a match up Hagler v Monzon would have been.

Outlanded by 2-1 Medez Jorge??? Um no Sugar out landed him by 15 and Hagler out punched him by almost 200. You're supposed to win the title from the champ he didn't, it was a draw at best. Not one punch hurt Marvin, Leonard fought like a sissy IMO. He edged the 1st and last 10 seconds of the round then ran for the rest, Golden Boy gets victory like his tainted one against Hearns. They all ducked 'the body snatcher' though so although i'm a big Marvelous fan there's always that doubt...
These are great fights that we all will never see in the remaining of our lives again. This is when boxing was a sport. Now it's just a business. So sad , and I miss the sport of boxing, and thanks you tube for helping us all relive those exciting glory days again. 👍

I love this man, i was in awe of him when i was young, i followed his career before the internet era by waiting at the newsagent for RIng and KO magazines, i read them cover to cover so many times, it is a great memory of mine and i cherish it, looking at this great man today he looks fit and strong, he makes so much sense in what he says about his beloved sport, magic days indeed.

ewoe21 but Ray's punches did no damage to marvin's face unlike when tommy h gave the Marvelous one a nasty cut on his forehead and the crowd especially rooting for thomas h saw blood thinking the fight would favor him BUT the Marvelous One managed to sneak in a crushing right cross to the head of the hitman and when his knees wobbled, marvin went for the kill and presto he's down and out and the crowd loved it!!! that's boxing at its best!!!

Yes, The GOAT of boxers !!! When you see Hauler he is the full package !! Not only a great fighter, but a good heart and a great human being. I followed him through his career and was never disappointed. Listening to him give this interview was enlightening. He lives his life like he fought his fights PREPARED!!! I never saw him in a fight Not in Shape. Live on GREAT CHAMP !!!
When I was a kid in the 70's I used to watch Sugar Ray's Golden Gloves show on Saturday Mornings ... those were the days of great Boxing.

One of my favourite boxers ever, part of the real 4 king,s era, never been a welterweight to middleweight era like that since these guy,s stopped entertaining us, can only hope the era we have now is going to get better.

Keldor D'Antrell I don't recall Hagler being embarrassed and quitting versus Ray. Perhaps you are confusing him with Duran. Leonard fought Marvin at the end of Hagler's career and he retired after that fight. He would have fought Ray in a rematch but that didn't transpire. Consequently, Hagler retired at the end of a hall of fame career.
