  • Photomechanic is a popular choice for photographers working under pressure in the field, certainly with events, sporting events and photojournalism.
    In this Quick Live demo we will have a look at two different methods of working with Capture One. Either embracing the Session workflow or simply using Capture One as a browser.
    Photomechanic will be used to do a fast selection from the camera's memory card and then transfer to Capture One using the above methods.

    just watched this almost a year later. some good tips here. been using PhotoMechanic longer than C1. I will sometimes use PM to select, then create a C1 catalog in the image folder. This avoids having to move images after selections are made. Select picks in PM window, drag into catalog window and start editing. Set output folder as image folder with subfolders.

      Hmm that is really interesting. So you end up with a catalog per image folder, but it doesn't matter because Photo Mechanic is the 'master' catalog. I use Photo Mechanic Plus and have been trying to work out how best to use Capture One. I usually use Photolab, but for some things I prefer Capture One. Currently I am a bit all over the place. I am going to try this, thanks.

    You can configure Photo Mechanic 6 for greater IPTC compatibility with Capture On. You must:
    Edit>Preferences>IPTC-XMP Tab>Choose the Lightening Bolt icon on bottom screen right and select Capture One.

    For me one great feature of PM is the ability to include GPS data into files during editing along with IPTC. And a feature I often need for specific websites is to output files to a particular maximum file size e.g "no larger than 5MB". I can do that with C1 but with different image and crop sizes it needs a lot of futzing about with individual files to get it right. PM allows you to re-save with parameters on folders of images at a time. It's not a cheap application and there's a big learning curve, and some of the options don't work in the way you think they might do from the naming of the buttons, but it's worth exploring. PM support is very helpful and (in my experience) very honest about how things do and don't work!

    I can see how PM is handy for people in high volume situations, but how is it actually “faster” than capture one? It’s faster for showing previews yes, but does it have any special tools?
    I’m also not sure why I’d “need” it when Capture (and it’s competition who shall remain nameless) seems to have all the same functionality?
    I can already add metadata, catalogue images, and make selects. I can’t (as far as I know) download multiple cards at once, but I can select just the images I need from a card.
    I’m started wondering about PM because I’m trying slash my culling time down and many love PM for this, but I’m not seeing the reason for that anywhere.
    Other than loading/previewing images faster, (I’d love C1 to work on that), I’m not really seeing why PM is better than Capture, or why I’d use both in a workflow?

    I could sync all the rating and stars from Photo Mechanic to Capture one, but how do I sync back from Capture one to PM with any rating or colour tag changes?

    • @CaptureOne
      @CaptureOne  Před 3 lety

      One thing you can try is to go to Metadata tool in Capture One, then hit ellipsis and select 'Sync Metadata'. This should help!

    New user to C1 20. PM6 user for sports but now I am doing some wedding and products, shooting tethered in studio. Big fan of the Session workflow, Sub folder setup, and love the smart folder approach. In this video you are importing images already converted to JPG. If you setup a new session in C1 20, Open PM6 and copy your selected images or ingest a card (select all) to the Capture Folder in the newly created Session's folder, do you end up with the NEF and the sidecar XMP file? I don't believe there is a way to copy or move the RAW file from its location to its destination, using PM6, without having the sidecar XMP file copied to the location folder. I would choose not to have the sidecar file, XMP at all. I prefer to add metadata once I have my selects edited then they are ready to be BU/archived and then distributed.

    • @CaptureOne
      @CaptureOne  Před 3 lety

      Hi there. Yes, IPTC is inlcuded in the exported/processed image. See more here: support.captureone.com/hc/en-us/articles/360003412157-XMP-and-IPTC Note that we do not 'write' to the RAW file as Capture One takes non-destructive approach.

    Please help. I am really stuck. I am using windows 10, photomechanic and capture one 21. I have followed each and every step in your first option of photo mechanic to capture one. I am using an Sony Alpha 1 so maybe that is the problem??? My photos are all going to my destination on my hard drive and they show up in my session group but in "capture" group but nothing is showing up in my session. It just keeps saying "no images". Is it because it is the new camera?? I thought it was supported by capture one 21?? Hope you can help me. Will try capture one support as well

      Hi Laurie,
      Make sure you are using 14.1 release of Capture One and also note that currently the compressed format is not supported, but will be added soon.

    Thank you C1 & David for this one. I've been using this combo for cca 1 year, when I switched from LR to C1. Anyway, I still have a question. I use to mark my shots in camera by locking them. Then I use PM to ingest locked, which I transfer to C1, no issues. I use this to deliver images during a game I shoot. But if I want to load whole card (or selects from PM selected other way) after I get home from the shoot and the import into C1 catalogue includes these locked photos, C1 doesn't load them. I have to explicitly change file attributes and unlock the photos. Using C1 20 and PM 6.0 on MacOS 10.15. Is there a way to either load only locked images to C1 (as in PM ingest locked only) or unlock the files during import into C1 catalogue? Would it help using session instead of catalogue (LR habit)?

    • @CaptureOne
      @CaptureOne  Před 3 lety

      Hi Svatoslav,
      We identified an issue with some cameras and locked files recently. What camera are you using?

    • @svatostraka
      @svatostraka Před 3 lety +1

      @@CaptureOne Canon EOS 5D Mark IV. When I do ingest locked only in PM, I can import them into C1 no problem. But as soon as I copy my card to disk, load it to PM, do the culling and then attempt to import selected from PM into C1, locked files are ommited. Therefore, after I copy the card to disk (using Finder), I run "find . -flags uchg -exec chflags nouchg {} \;" to unlock the files on filesystem, then proceed to culling. It would be nice if C1 can do unlock during import, or even have the possibility to import locked only into C1 directly. :)
