- While I wait for the new Chassis Harness to come in for the 2017 STI With the Eg33 Swap; I want to knock out a few of the smaller parts. SO today we are tuning the stock headlight into an Air intake to feed our Big Precision 6870 Turbo! I've wanted to do something like this for a few years and why not just do it. Also to note this headlight will only be used for racing or shows in the future. Not for daily driving.

I'm just gonna come out and say it. This is the absolute sickest Subaru build on CZcams right now, been checking notifs every day for the next video on this car.
Hopefully soon it will actually work 🔥💪
The headlight looks awesome, you could always shape a piece of plastic over the open side with the actual light and close it off/weather proof it just a thought I had. Looks really good man nice work
May yru to do this with some ABS Plastic 👀🔥

I commented on your last video, about needing advice for fixing my motor in 09 WRX. I been watching your videos and I’m in detox to get my Soob back.
I'll see if I can find the other comment if I missed it 🙏
@@Smeedia thank you for replying. About a year ago, I bought an 09 WRX with Cobb stage 2 My plan was to teach my older boys to drive a stick and flip it before 30 days, keeping from buying a tag. My younger 2 kids and really liked the car, so I sold my WS6 Trans Am instead. Well, I quickly spent my way up to clean book value having the air conditioning fixed, new clutch, rack and pinion, a complete tuneup. I trust our mechanic for those type things. After tuneup, I felt like car was missing 15% power and the turbo pressure relief didn’t make that cool noise anymore. It started coding lean fuel mixture. Which I believe is why it didn’t backfire out of exhaust anymore either. When they told me it was fixed and ready. I was driving and started hearing a slight knock, I quickly realized the motor was gone. What started as a slight knock was now very loud and undrivable.
I’m not able to rebuild my own motor, I understand a lot of things, but not that.
I’m lost on what direction to take, and a resource like yourself isn’t available in my area.
I need advice that I trust, and you know what you’re talking about.
If your open to it or comfortable with it I would snag a type RA shortblock. Around $1900 from flat iron tuning and very stout for an OEM Engine. People go down down rabbit hole of JDM Engine swaps but just becomes a PIA IMO. Or you could snag a drop in long block from ebay but that's always a hit or miss 😖
Came out awesome! Gotta be that guy though… that’s not a NACA duct. It’s just a duct. NACA ducts have a specific shape and function. 🤓
Learned this today 😅 good info to know!
DUDE!! THATS DOPE AS F!!
Right!!!! 🔥
I like the way it turned out. I'm glad that you're only going to use it for the track. I wonder however, is there a way to seal off the rest of the housing o keep particulates from collecting inside of the housing over time?
Going to try and do something with some ABS Plastic 🙏🔥
honestly, it looks pretty damn good. Just paint the scuffed bits. A good idea is you should get super small bendable weather stripping and glue it onto the edge of the headlight lens. Much cleaner look and will hide cutting blemishes. Also, you should think about creating a fixed air directing shield onto the backend of the new intake duct. Put the shield on the drivers side of the duct to direct air straight to the turbo.
Not bad ideas 🔥 was debating doing the weather stripping on the cuts 😁
@@Smeedia add some sort of rubber gasket and i feel like you could really seal the light
Bird catcher 😆 for that big turbo
😉😉😉
Be careful with the harness, Yes brother. We know you and tackles got history together. 🥺😳🤣
Tackles? 👀
@@Smeedia harnesses. lol
So your not planning on resealing around the air duct? Getting dust and dirt inside the lens is gonna be a PITA to clean even if you don't daily it. Some abs plastic sheets and black silicone should do the job.
May snag some to try and sell it off a bit more, was going to just run compressed air though it to try and clean it lol
@@Smeedia That does look great, could you have installed it so the lip of the duct sat on top of the lens itself instead of behind it? Also, if your going to race it, are you concerned with the air flow going through the lense and possibly breaking it when going full out?
@@Smeedia should of cut the hole in the lense smaller then the duct and slid the duct in so it sat over the lense hole and with sealer.
I tried but with this duct it wouldent fit, that was my initial idea to get it on lol
I don't think there would be a great enough pressure build up in the lens to do so 🤔
id see if you can get a duct printed that sits flush with the outer lens or with a flange that would allow you to create a seal against the lens.
Might try and get one printed 👀🔥
Speaking as someone who's messed up more than one of these headlights..
If you are running the 2017 Limited self-adjusting lamps like I was, and you do not have it sealed, I am flat out warning you, do NOT let a single drop of moisture get into the housing.
The LED module is on the bottom. If you wash the car and any water gets in there, you WILL short that module out. I have done it twice now, and just bought 2 new lights as replacement. They are $750/each though.. -.-
I just don't want to see you make the same mistake I did. Do not wash the car with those lights in. The module on the bottom means if any water leaks into the housing, it goes into the pin connector of the box on the bottom of the headlight where it screws in. If you have a layer of moisture and you turn aggressively, or you put it on an angle front/back, it can leak into it and short it out.
If you even see any moisture at ALL in the housing after modifying, do not think it'll fix itself. It will not, and will just cause greenhousing and condense more in time.
I use to run a business retrofitting headlights, thr self levling doesn't work anymore anyway, the rear sensor is broken from when I was bagged. But, these are only going to be used for track day purposes 🤙
@@Smeedia Ok, just wanting to make sure you don't make the same mistake(s) I did with lights..
I'm having someone local here do the next round. I can build my car up so easily, but the lights, ugh.. I'm so tired of redoing them only to have expensive failures.
Just going to have someone else do it and at least have a 'warranty' with the config. They ain't cheap to play with, at all.
Gotta play to learn I guess!
Cutting a headlight for the turbo, that's getting serious! Will pop hard if you show the car, along with that ridiculous intake. Want to hear that fire up!
Sammmmme, I just wanna hear it turn over 😍
For race car setting would you also d a downpipe hood dump for weight savings
We could 🤔🔥
Heard 3D printer and immediately got excited.
Heard your doing some crazy Carbon printing? 😳
@@Smeedia ya I use carbon fiber infused nylon and it's good for engine parts and whatever tbh. Very strong and I already made some iag injector spacers and more. Obviously pure carbon fiber parts are great to and branching into that to. Got to do something to aford fixing my car🤣.
Nice! But Tanner, you said “summertime”. Everyone knows that summertime in the PNW only means a month and a half of sunshine, lol. Excellent build my man!
Lol for that month and a half I'll be living life 😅🔥
@@Smeedia Fact!
just curious. If you wanted to daily drive this setup. Could you get some sort of filter to prevent schmoo from getting into the turbo and run a more compact low beam and high beam? or is that not a thing?
Unfortunately no 😭 there's not enough room to fit a filter from what I've seen
Is it possble to 3D print the headlight hole so you could make a plug to prevent water and etc. from getting into the headlights and drive it as a daily?
Yes, but need to snag a 3D printer to do so 😅😅😅
Nice mod! Maybe use a gasket for the cut area
Have some left over from the flares I might try🔥
Woot woot
🔥😁🔥😁
Will you add a fine mesh grille on the back of the NACA duct to protect the turbo from bugs, crud etc?
There is one on there 🔥😁
I thought you woulda fed it through the front of the headlight so that it would still be sealed. This turned out dope af though!!
That was my original plan but the duct was too big 😅🔥
@@Smeedia yeah that’s what i figured after seeing it once it cured. Still came out dope bro! I’m sure there’s a clean way to seal off the rest of the headlight so that it could stay mostly clean.
Might try to form some ABS Plastic into it 🤔🔥
@@Smeedia exactly what i was thinking. That plus a little wire mesh on the back side and you have a good weather headlight. Just gotta remember to avoid the puddles if you get caught in any rain lol.
🚀
🔥😈
Looks Gucci 🤪🤙🌀
🙌🙌🙌
Make a screen filter behind the headlight to prevent rocks and other foreign objects
Might use some finer mesh to help add some protection 🔥
2 questions, 1, I have a top side intercooler on my '20 WRX and I see you don't have one, did yours come with it, if so, where did you do with it? Also what is your hood bc I rly like it!!!!
All subarus come factory with top mount intercooler, there are a lot of options out there to swap tona Front mount intercooler 🔥😁
Ayyyyy 🤙🏽🤙🏽
Ayyyy 🔥🔥🔥
It's a shame the duct didn't fit in such a way that the housing could be sealed. But, it looks amazing. Would also be amazing if the turbo could just pull air straight through the duct, but the clocking of it isn't conducive of that, unfortunately.
Now, for the daily driven "mode" headlights you'll be getting, are you going to be putting a filter over the turbo just to limit the amount of dust getting in, and using the mesh for track/show days? Would be interested in knowing that! (Also, circuit demon, out of New York State, they have a nice VA chassis light that would look amazing on this)
Unfortunately no filter will fit so turbo gaurd is the best we have to work with but should be more than sufficient 🔥😁
I can build almost thr same lights as CD, but he does make some gnarly builds 🔥🙌
Hey brother. I had a single turbo bmw that had a similar type of turbo screen. It was actually like 2 layers thick. Long story short my engine is being rebuilt again… I’m playing it safe and running a compact cone filter.
I've got no room for a filter 😅 the guard should be sufficient nothing should be going through the turbo... key word is should though lol
@@Smeedia I feel you. Took me a solid week of searching online until I found a compact one from a good rep company.
Random question: are Subaru sensors finicky?as in only want to except values from the OEM version? I keep getting po137, and p2296 and replaced the O2 sensor with one like OE from Amazon should I buy the actual one from a dealership near me? Or could it be something else
They can be pretty picky. Whenever it comes to having to replace a sensor I'll always snag OEM 🤙
@@Smeedia gotcha ok thank you man for always helping! And the golf you got now! Test drove one at work the other day was definitely a nice well built car
headlight be all "hmmmmm, how much DOES that wiring harness weight?"
😉😉😉
Do you know if 2018+ headlights would work and fit on a 2016 sti if I get the subispeed harness?
They should, they're the same shape
I think the reason y it was too long is because the inner lip of the duct is supposed to sit flush on the lens so it seals off the headlight. But that would make it show more still looks clean. I got a rhd 2000 legacy and am planning on doing a eg33 swap on it it’s gonna take a while lol
It wouldent fit without enlarging the hole too big, trust me I tried before putting it on the inside 😅
They don't happen overnight but sounds like it'll be an awesome build!
Now how to stop on the stuff getting into the headlight LEFT of the opening
I know the feeling of "I built you and I can unbuild you"
Lol we are not alone 😅🔥
Do you have to change the tune depending on which headlight you're running? LOL, kinda sounds funny, but it's a serious question.
Lol no I shouldent 🤙🙏
I did not work a NACA back in the day but I don't think that's what a NACA duct is.... I think it's just a duct. I think they are the ones that are almost parallel with the air flow and have a ramp that creates negative pressure sucking air into the duct. Your headlight one just brute force crams air in there... but that there is anything wrong with that. It looks great! I think you should make one for Bader. I wonder if you can use the but you cut out and some clear epoxy to seal the headlight back up again... or maybe some acrylic.
You right 😅 apparently it's a very specific style of duct. Gping to try using some ABS Plastic to seal the front up and may snag a gasket for the rear
Turns out it is not about pressure but laminar flow on that ramp. And now we know!
Les gooooo
💪💪💪
why not get a piece of carbon fiber plate shaped like the opening for closure for rainy or snowy days?
Going to see what I can whip up for it 🔥 will probably be with ABS Plastic though 😅
@@Smeedia here, lets meet halfway, plastic wrapped in dry carbon wrap :)
Can you do a video about a ej25 break in process? I have a lot of questions about it and I can't find all of the answers
What questions? 🙏 everyone has their own views on engine break in
@@Smeedia How many miles does it take?
If I keep swap to aftermarket parts like forged internals and swapping to a vf52 rather than a vf40 should I get a break in tune?
What's a good break in oil and how often should I be changing it?
What is considered as driving too hard during breaking it in?
These are some, I need to rember what other ones I have. I just blew my turbo and have terrible knock in my legacy gt. This is my first rodeo
Typically most break in will happen in the first 100 miles of driving.
If your adding anything that can effect power I'd suggest getting in break in tune
@ahawnt I appreciate the advice. I'm just lost in terms of what to do and I have much to learn. I just wanna get started on rebuilding
Nice 🐀🐁 Door for easy access to their new home 😏 😂 seriously though nice Clean Mod.
Eyyyy, thank you 🔥
Why not use some good mesh screen around the back, an on turbo you’ll be good for daily use!!
Rains alot up here so if I do decide to drive it in the rain don't wanna have to worry about water 🤙
@@Smeedia makes sense.
Rawr
Well look who it is.... lol
@@Smeedia been waiting the last hour lol.
Why not put a mesh around the duct to help with the air intake
May do this 👀🔥
@@Smeedia do it! It could add another layer to protect it from sucking up anything harmful
Imagine how it would look with twin turbos
🥵🥵🥵
Oh headlight projects... it looks pretty sweet. I was going to ask if you were at least getting a turbo screen but I saw it towards the end.
I've done quite a few retrofits over my days. Last one was supposed to be Q45 gatling beam projector retrofit in the G, but I aborted it after it became apparent on my test headlight that the bucket needed to be cut/modified way more than I thought. The coupe has a slightly larger bucket so it works a lot easier (and surprise, all the references I found online turned out to be coupes). Went with blackhousing and yellow high/fog bucket instead, still looks fire.
Yassss, haven't done a projector conversion in a while but sometimes dome hacking is needed 😭
@@Smeedia I wanna revisit the project eventually but I just don't have it in me right now. Still have the mockup test light so I can mess with that if I feel like it. Check out the Q45 projector if you're unaware of them. Super rad.
Could you not put a silicone coupler on the intake and hook it up to the turbo? Like a 45° obviously leaving the screen on .... Lol
Definitely possible 🤔
Yeah there's a guy with an Mk6 GLI that has a similar headlight duct setup.(someone made his for him carbon fiber... Looks so nice) but he has his ducting clamped on with a silicone tube
Also I've been told the best part for air flow to suck in for an intake is right over the fog light area. No one has done it for an Mk6 Jetta but I was thinking about trying to make something and trying it that way🤔
😎😎
🔥🔥🔥🔥
what does NACA mean? looks like an air duct to me!
Lol got me curious for what it stands for now 😅
Not to get all geeky but it is not a NACA duct. That is a very specific design that uses a pressure differential to function, but to answer you question...National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics
I think you could fit a small mushroom filter on it instead of a screen, screen only is suuuss!
We tried one a few weeks back and it wouldent fit😖
@@Smeedia aah sad, hoping the screen doesnt get sucked in haha!
Looks good but you should have made the ducked flush with the front of headlight
Wouldent fit without really hacking up the lens, trust me I tried lol

Why not add another screen to the intake so you don’t find random things inside the engine as well? Like I’m imagining a plastic bag or other trash getting pulled into the turbo and getting stuck on the turbo screen.
