Ironically, excessive speed is what caused the washboard road in the first place...but who wants to go 8mph?

Yes that’s true and it is ironic. Caused by enough speed to bounce tires, but made worse by going slow enough to be bounced by the wash board. After they exist going fast enough to smooth it out does not add to the wash boards and it’s less stress on your suspension. It may be harder on tires. Tires are cheaper than shocks and tie rods. Just my opinion from experience.

Risk in such a hike is a function of ability, agility, and experience. It was not really very risky for me.
