i think an important distinction to make on the whole "simple story" argument is that there is a difference between a simple story executed badly or even just okay, making it an average to boring experience, versus a simple storyline done well (or in an unconventional way) which can make for a really compelling watch

For example: the LotR trilogy is basically about this dude that was tasked to destroy a ring in the fires of Mount Doom, where it was forged. Attack on Titan shows that the destination still matters otherwise the journey means nothing.
We can bend the rules for the sake of a convenient argument but simplicity, despite not inherently bad, is still simplicity and takes little effort.
The argument of being self aware doesn't change the fact that it's still simple, you're admitting where the show or film's place in the visual medium is at, it will stay there as a result.
Also we need to differentiate "simplicity" and "a watered-down reductionist summary". "This show is basically about" vs "this show spends the entire time doing this one thing", aka about a third of shounen anime.
Epic fights and dramatic cool downs won't fool your audience if we're talking about simplicity.
I've been watching more slice of life anime which appear to be simple on the surface, but if you have trouble processing information and forming social algorithms like me, you'll notice an underlying complex emotional and mental fabric of their stories.
And heck, it's possible to combine both, something like Spiderverse or something from Pixar.

Story is definitely mid in demon slayers. Ufotable is able to animate and bring out emotion in every action scene that bring the character to life. You almost feel like you are in front of that fight scene and understand the character struggle. They did a good job at show casing the power of the Hashira and also the power of the demon. In both the Tengen and Rengoku, you felt their determination and how hard they were trying to just keep up with the demon. Ufotable does an amazing job at changing expression everything there is a clash of blades creating great flow in the fight.
At no point, if you did not read the manga, you are not sure if Rengoku was going to win or lose. That suspense was so strong and by the time you finally see Rengoku heavily breathing, you realizes that he is probably going to die is why that fight scene is much stronger then Juijitsu Kaisen last fight. Being a prequel does hurt it though since there was no suspense since we know who is going to live or die.

Demon slayer's anime is a good example of perfect execution. I remember reading the manga and feeling like i was always waiting for something because it is a very generic story. The anime however, especially season 2, basically condensed a full arc into 11 episodes and you add the insane level of animation. there was very little dead space if any in later episodes and because the actual arc only took 11 episodes it felt like a really fun ride but then you think about it and its the same formula as season 1.

    • @edwardmillard4398
      @edwardmillard4398 Před 2 lety +53

My main issue with Demon Slayer as a whole and why it is objectively mediocre in the manga is that it is very bad at set up and payoff, especially in the long term. The most clear example of this is the use of breathing techniques/other capabilities where characters show a new technique that was not set up previously in any way and is convenient for the situation they need it in. e.g. basically every Zenitsu fight whether it's thunder breathing: 1st form thunder clap and flash, six fold, god-like speed and (not gonna say because manga spoilers). There is little attempt by the writer to stick to what they have so far and using it to solve problems. This is detrimental to the writing quality because it undermines the stakes while also ruining narrative consistency.
This is something that the Shibuya Incident arc in the manga of Jujutsu Kaisen does extremely well in that nearly everything that came before pays off in some way in that arc which is partially why it is objectively one of the best arcs in contemporary Shonen manga. No arc in Demon Slayer comes close.

    10. This is a "perfect" series that genuinely makes me feel and think about topics, memories, and the world itself to such an extent that I can't help but read/watch it over and over.
    9. This series is practically speaking one of the best things I'll probably every encounter, most likely a "founder" of a genre or theme or so revolutionary that you'll see it throughout the rest of its community. Easily something I consume for the joy that it brings.
    8. A heartfelt and provocative work that makes me think about real life aspects and form opinions around those, usually ends up making the world around me seem far more enjoyable than before, however leaving it will cause some sort of depression as it leaves me still wanting more.
    7. A series that would genuinely make me invested in its characters and themes, but just miss out on those points that I myself can't describe or understand. Would watch again, but maybe think about if it would fit someone else's taste before recommending it to them.
    6. A generally mid-level work/creation that feels lackluster but still overall good. Most likely far too ambitious for its performance and maybe a bit too popular for its quality, overall an enjoyable piece of work.
    5. Something that gives me nothing after leaving the series, however had some nice moments and memories around it, overall an enjoyable experience but leaning too much into its genres, mediums, and themes rather than giving a genuine world. Partly overlooked in retrospect and with moments of absurdism too far or reality too boring.
    4. A work that I'd prefer not to watch but if it would ever be brought up into discussion, I would have multiple opinions of and about it. Generally lacking in terms of writing and worldbuilding with characters that often feel one note, and maybe too "small" in their own world.
    3. A series that would often be so bad that it can be considered good would fall along a 3 out of ten. Particularly boring but with just enough intensity and mindlessness to be watched/consumed again.
    2. A series that genuinely lessens the experience of its genre and misrepresents a facet of groups and people, to such an extent one often wonders whether or not one left the show dumber and more cynical/jaded as a result. Would rarely ever watch again, and if done so would most likely only be in a social setting to laugh at the work of art rather than genuinely appreciate it.
    1. Not worthy enough to mention or discuss.

JJK0 will always be better for Manga readers than anime onlys. Ideally this movie should have come out after the first half of season 2 because there would be more context, at least for Geto's character. Tbh, when I read the Manga for this volume, it was I after I had read where season 2 might end and I still thought 0 was okay. The only reason I liked it was because of how much set up Gege had done and how well he incorporated this short story into a much bigger series.
I would advice anime onlys to make their final judgement on JJK after watching season 2 because that is the best the series has to offer (so far, but the current arc is wild right now). Trust me, the first season and movie, are baiting you into thinking this is a generic shonen. I fell for it really hard lol.

I’ll start this off by saying I enjoyed JJK 0. I think it’s a good gateway into anime because the story has a conclusion and you don’t really need any prior knowledge when watching it in contrast to Mugen Train. I think the animation in JJK was good and soundtrack was killer. I think their was enough nods to anime/manga fans to feel like you got your money worth.
I feel like things being Mid is the evolution of saying things are overrated. It’s an easy cop out that offers no need for back up. People will say shows they would give an 8/10 mid because they don’t want to say it’s good. I get the statement that you never give things a 1 but surely mid is something that you watch and then only remember when someone brings it up in 3 years time and you kinda remember some of the characters.
Garnt hits the nail on the head with Demon Slayer. The story is simple but that’s a compelling factor. Not every show needs to be One piece,Lord of the rings or Star Wars in terms of story telling. I see so many shows bloat the story up or introduce the most random elements just to spice it up. That’s why I like Demon slayer because the story boils down to ‘I just want my sister to be human again’.

In a 10 point system, for the vast majority of people, the only numbers that are gonna be used are 1, 2, 5, 7, 9 and 10. So only about 60%. In a 5 point system, you do regularly see people make use of all five numbers, but personally it feels confusing. I, for one, don't feel comfortable giving 5s and 1s, because I can't fathom something being so perfect to warrant a 5, that it can't possibly be better, or a 1, that it can't possibly be worse. Which is why I like the three-point system, where you don't bother with thinking a whole lot on what exact number it is. A three is basically "It was great, I'd recommend it to everyone (that would be interested in the first place), I enjoyed it a lot and wouldn't mind rewatching it." For me, the Peter Jackson LotR trilogy is a 3, because I literally watch those movies every time they're on my TV program. A 2 is like "It was good, it didn't wow me, but I don't regret watching it. I just won't go out of my way to rewatch it or recommend it." It's something you like in the moment, but it didn't leave a lasting impression. For me, something like FIFA 23 is a 2 game. It's not really any different from another FIFA game, and assuming that I like sports games, I wouldn't mind playing it, but I wouldn't go out of my way to buy it. A 1 is "This was a waste of my time; I didn't like it, it wasn't for me and I will absolutely avoid it in the future." The focus here is on the fact that you consider it a waste of your time - maybe it isn't even "bad", it's just bad or mid enough to the point where you got no enjoyment out of it. For me, that would be something like a video about math. I don't doubt that it's likely a good video, I just don't find math interesting and I would prefer to be doing literally anything else, including stuff I avoid doing, because it's more worthwhile. You could, if you want, add a 0 to the rating system, which is basically "I FUCKING HATE THIS PIECE OF SHIT", something so insulting to you that the mere mention of it stokes a burning fury in your very soul. Or something like 1, excluding the "it might be good, just not for me" part, because you're definitively sure that there's nothing good about it. For me, that would be the Rings of Power show, which even on the most basic of levels fails to be good. Ignore the lore it fucks up, ignore the characters it butchers, the writing, pacing and sometimes even the costumes and locations are god awful and don't deserve to be brought into existence in the given context.

The problem with the JJK0 movie was when it was released. Watching it directly after Season 1 would confuse anyone because you'd assume that it is just a random side story with no relevance to the plot if you go in with normal shounen expectations. But two important things to know about JJK0 is that it was originally written as a one shot and the significance of the story makes much more sense after the Hidden Inventory Arc. JJK was never meant to be an actual full serialization, but JJK0 was so popular that it got pushed to a full series. There are three take aways that are pretty important. One is the reason why that lady was sobbing in the theater Connor went to that will be very hard to understand without watching/reading Hidden Inventory first. But beside that there are two other plot points that will pay off later, both of which happen after the Shibuya arc.
I think as seasoned anime fans, it's important to not let jaded views for how some series perform be the base expectation for how other series must be. I think that's a problem Trash Taste has at the moment. Gigguk and to be fair other people went in with the expectation that JJK0 is just some throwaway story like a lot of anime movies, but JJK does not work like that. It's easy to assume that it's like Naruto/Blue Exorist/Boruto, etc. But Gege's main inspirations are Bleach and Hunter x Hunter and both of those things show very well in his writing. Even the first arcs which are kind of slow when it comes to setting up the plot/elements have a good amount of significance in later arcs.

They say it's overrated, but how can it be overrated when everyone agrees the story is just OK? Maybe 1 in 50 say it's a "masterpiece", the remaining 49 just think it's just a good show.
A few days ago I started and finished the manga, just to find out if it was really mediocre as many said... and the truth is that it's not even that bad. Of course it's not even close to a masterpiece, but it's not the worst manga ever either.

Connor did explain Operation Mincemeat pretty well, but there were a couple interesting things I remember from doing a research paper on it and the Invasion of Sicily.
    1) The guy they used was a Welsh suicide victim
    2) The places Germany thought the Allies would be attacking were Corsica and Sardinia instead of Sicily
Overall, Mincemeat was key to capturing Sicily, then Italy, and eventually ending the European theater portion of WW2.

You'll always see normies crying over things they barely understand. It's how bandwagoners create the illusion of being superfans when really they just wanna feel included like "Hey look! I like anime too!" Lol Like if posers exposed themselves to more than just what's mainstream then they wouldn't look like normies who think every mid series is incredible. They've no standards so they wouldn't know either way. Lpl

I feel "mid" is often used just to express ones own opinion about the anime, not really how the anime itself is (and to trigger people). Like for example for some people FMA is mid, but not in the way that the anime isnt well made, just because they dont like it.
Almost no anime is mid nowadays and a lot of people should use other terms. For example i dont like JJK for several reasons. Still i cant deny that it is, objectively, a good show, because it became really popular and has some good aspects.
Also other people hate on stuff like AoT with the simple reason that they got spoiled...I know that shit, been through it myself, but dont let it out on the anime, but the community or something, else it makes no sense too.

The only reason Garnt feels like the movie has no impact on the main series is because Yuta hasn't come back yet. If you read the manga, you can see it actually affects the story. Taking the manga into consideration, it's like an 8.5/10 minimum

    • @mavitsyoboibrent2570
      @mavitsyoboibrent2570 Před 2 lety

Your comment kinda reminded me of an old rant Garnt did. Basically he said when rating an anime he doesn't take the manga into consideration because those are two different forms of the media. While the anime takes it's story from the manga, it doesn't mean the manga will justify what happens in the anime (e.g. when Rental Girlfriend fans say the MC will get better in the manga so stop trashing on him, it doesn't make up for the fact in the anime he's a horrible person). So tbh I can see where he's coming from saying the movie has no effect on the story. Until something happens to show what it set up has an effect, it will still maintain the criticisms.

8:57 "Boring" part usually is the one hyping up the "exciting" part. If the train part do not happen, then it will be less emotional when rengoku dies. The train part also give great power scale, rengoku easily hold enmu while tanjiro fight him. Meanwhile akaza toyed with rengoku and tanjiro could do nothing. So its still 8/10 for me.

    My rating scaling.
10 - Revolutionary or game changer of how I view media. Can potentially retroactively change the scaling of the rating system.
9 - Best of it's kind in its genre. Rarely given just like 10. Movies I see as perfect can still end up here.
8 - Contender for the top ten of the year it was released
7 - Thoroughly enjoyable, though there are notable flaws
6 - Competently produced, usually has one shining point
5 - Standard in all ways. Toss up on whether I hate it or not
4 - Underachiever. Would be placed in the back of the watch list even if it caught your interest. The zone of wasted potential if the execution was the problem.
3 - Forgettable and replaceable, regardless of originality of the premise.
2 - Insultingly bad. It is outright offensive to watch.
1 - Waste of time and resource it took to produce it. In contrast to rating of 2, it doesn't ellicit any emotional response.
0 - So bad that it has an analytical value to study how bad it is.
The weird thing is that my curve for the rating isn't all too linear. There is a huge gap between 2 and 3 than there are a gap in 9 or 10.

Honestly JJK for me is actually pretty damn good for something not close to finished yet. While I don't think it's as good as something like TTGL or HxH, I do think certain aspects I actually prefer.
JJK personally has some of my favorite powers and abilities I have seen in anime in awhile (rivaling HxH for me in that aspect) they all feel pretty unique and as the manga goes on more and more is explained, and the power system has a good level of depth to it (honestly surprised how well thought out it was)
Also feel like it has no pacing issues at all tbh, for me it has yet to feel particularly badly paced at any point for a long period of time.
Only main issue I have with JJK so far is most of the villians feel a little empty, though I think this is because we get so little time with each of them and we never really get their perspective, funnily enough Jogo or Mahito are probably the best written so far lol. (Something HxH did particularly well with the Phantom Troupe and the Chimera Ants) I feel like if JJK could fix this issue it could really elevate the show for me.
