I think there is a problem here..Usually, even in very cold temps, these trucks are almost instant starters. At least that's my experience. Nice 142 by the way..and once you get it going - we know you know - Its a beast!!

To start the engine under very cold conditions, you have to activate the coldstart-device under the front lid.
This causes a greatly increased flow rate of the injection pump.
Before you start, set the manual throttle to full power, then pull (or push) the cold-start knob under the front lid, nearby the oil-dipstick.
go back in the cab, push the accelerator-pedal and hold it down, until the engine runs. Release the hand-throttle and start the engine.

Len Mar thank you for the advice, but you’re wrong. We’re driving those trucks since the 50ys and we know how to start them up, there isn’t something like s „coldestart device“. Every Diesel engine is hard to start up at cold temperatures, especially old ones with mechanical fuel injection. The only thing that’s helping is to warm up the cylinders, for example with splashing break cleaner in to the manifold, or mixing some petrol to the diesel. Just ask the russians, the know how to act in the cold 😅

That could be a reasen, yes. And oh yeah the 142 is the most fascinating Scania Truck ever in my view. Thank you for your comment :)

It sounds like you have an air leak on your diesel system so your diesel drains back to your tank after standing too long, my job`s 142`s arent that hard to start even in -15 celcius, after standing for several months ::) 142`s sound great dont they! :D We have an `84 that has been adjusted up A LOT, sounds like a real beast! :D
