Based on the literary classic by Thomas Hardy, Far from the Madding Crowd is the story of Bathsheba Everdene (Carey Mulligan), a fiercely independent and spirited young woman who inherits her uncle’s farm. A rarity in Victorian times-financially autonomous, beautiful, and headstrong-she attracts three very different but determined suitors: Gabriel Oak (Matthias Schoenaerts), a sheep farmer, captivated by her willfulness; Frank Troy (Tom Sturridge), a handsome and reckless Sergeant; and William Boldwood (Michael Sheen), a prosperous and mature bachelor. This timeless story of Bathsheba’s choices and passions, while trying to maintain her own independence, explores the nature of relationships and love-as well as the human ability to overcome hardship through resilience and perseverance. A Fox Searchlight release.

Matthias and Thomas are so very intelligent and it's interesting to observe one coming from a director who has to oversee the entire crew and Matthias who foretells his sensitivties of his role. Carey and Matthias are truly the stars of this movie. They are the draw that bring the interest in the remake of this classic. After seeing this rendition, I did watch the rendition made 20 years ago.

Really enjoyed this conversation between the director and the actor of this film. I have seen the film a few times and i agree with their take about the end. I love what Thomas said about devotion being the adult sense of love as opposed to the teenage sense of love. I think Bathsheba as portrayed in this film does experience that transformation of being independent and feisty young lady who needs to prove to herself that she can make it on her own, to being interdependent with Gabriel Oak. As the movie unfolds we start to see the small signs of her seeking Gabriel's thoughts as she comes to see him as her equal and able to show her emotional vulnerability to him. She learns real devotion only after being ill treated by her husband. She learns that what Gabriel offers is true love and true devotion. And more importantly, she learns to develop the courage to be vulnerable with him and allow herself to admit her love for him.

Wow. What a spectacular interview, so vivid, open, and honest. In regards to that last question, his answer was heartfelt and passoniate. Of course it was out of love. The realization of mature love. The realization of the great man who loved her for a life time. What a great love story.

Totally in love with Thomas Vinterberg. What a smart guy with a great insight and perception. Love his humor too. I totally agree with what he says about character of Gabriel of being a man, that can see the woman, listen to the woman, give space to a woman and still be a man, being very rare. It´s true unfortunately. And I can´t help wondering, why is that.

This was a very good film. and Matthias Schoenaerts carried the film with his excellent nuanced performance and his masculine beauty. Carrie was fine, but Mattias was fantastic.

that's right. I agree with what Thomas said. she'd learned devotion from Gabriel which is one of really important elements of true and mature love. Yeah and she became to love him truly. She grown up without parents so doesn't know about devotion but independence I guess. That was all she knows and thinks about. this director's so sensitive~ I like him. and I like Matthias schoenaerts so much. He's a really nice person. so honest sincere and talented. love his glance.. stare.~ so warm sensible and charming~

I've not read the book, so the film is my only reference. Personally, I love the way Thomas chose to present these characters. "An antidote for modern day cynicism"...wonderful. Love the discussion about the final scene.
