  • Boris Karloff created the role of the Monster in 1931's "Frankenstein."
Karloff repeated the role in "Bride of Frankenstein" (1935)...
...and "Son of Frankenstein" in 1939.
"Ghost of Frankenstein" (1942) gave us a new Monster in Lon Chaney, Jr.
Bela Lugosi played the Monster in "Frankenstein Meets The Wolf Man" (1943)...
...with the help of stand-ins such as Gil Perkins and Eddie Parker.
"House of Frankenstein" (1944) introduced Glenn Strange in the role.
Strange returned in "House of Dracula" (1945), the last serious entry in the series...
...and finally in the comedy, "Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein" (1948).
Karloff will always be generally considered as the best actor in the role.
Glenn Strange also made the character his own and is still highly popular.
I neither own nor claim any rights to this material. Just having some fun with it. Thanks for watching!

I always thought "Ghost" and Chaney's performance were under appreciated. The scene where the Monster indicates he wants the child's brain instead of the scientist's says a lot about the nature of the Monster

The one thing that for years bugged me about the Monster in Abbot and Costello meet Frankenstein was how the Monster walks toward the flames. The Monster was always afraid of fire. It wasn't until I saw Ghost of Frankenstein that it made sense.

You forgot to mention that in "Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein" Glenn Strange broke his ankle in a scene where he carried off a young woman. Lon Chaney Jnr had to be made up as the monster to finish off the scene that Strange had started before his accident.

Boris Karloff who first portrayed the Frankenstein monster 3 times had done a swell job along with the gaunt features & heavy eyelids!
Lon Chaney Jr also played the role really good along with having the right size & that stone cold facial expression!
Bela Lugosi in FMTW, sure as hell had that evil sinister grin while being given back the strength the monster had in the previous films!
Now as for Glenn Strange having played the role in the last 3 Universal Frankenstein films, although some say that he's made the monster look more robotic due to the stiffly walk & mannerisms, I say Mr. Strange who stood roughly 6ft-5inch or 6'6 along with them broad shoulders had the perfect height once stepping into the big black padded boots!

      I wholeheartedly agree.
Strange’s take on the Monster is iconic in it’s own right. For my money he might be the scariest incarnation of the Monster. He really feels like a dead thing that came to life, and the way he moves is really intimidating. He really scared me in A&C meet Frankenstein, back when I was a kid. The way he tore down that gate. And even his deep voice…
      “Yes… master.”

I always thought that Glenn Strange was underrated as the monster. He used some facial expressions that made the whole thing downright disturbing.
He was at his best in House of Frankenstein. It's not a very good movie, but he (and Karloff, John Carradine, J. Carroll Naish, and Lon Chaney, Jr.) make it worthwhile.

Karloff was the only one who actually gave the Monster a character, as well as a character arc. Chaney just gave us a grunting monster, while Strange was never really allowed to show us that he was more than that. And Lugosi wasn't really much in the role either, considering he needed two stuntmen to get through the movie. And no one really captured Karloff's throne as the Monster.

If the answer is that the frankenstein movie is already rebooted as these movies including mary Shelley's frankenstein and victor frankenstein. Ok, here’s how I rank the monsters:
    1. Boris Karloff - Of course its him, he perfectly brings every emotion of Frankenstein’s Monster to life, especially in the original film and Bride of Frankenstein.
    2. Bella Lugosi - His mannerisms really give the monster a sense of evil, which I love about this iteration.
    3. Lon Chaney Jr. - He’s just a sort of ‘meh’ monster for me. He just seems tired, and he walks around with his eyes mostly closed the whole time. His performance and Ghost of Frankenstein as a whole really just scream ‘meh’ for me.
    4. Glenn Strange - I really don’t like this portrayal. His look is wrong, and he sort of makes the monster seem robotic. His facial expressions don’t really help for me. It also doesn’t help that the character isn’t really utilised well in 2 out of the 3 movies he’s in (House of Frankenstein and House of Dracula).
Loved this video by the way!
