For me it's the message here - it's all about having fun. As long as you are just a hobby rider, you can go as hard as you want with such a bike and at the end of the day you have no regrets if the bike breaks 😉

Pushing the budget to $800ish with the right buys you would be 90% of the way to a modern bike. Or build a ballin single speed.

Exactly that. There is nothing wrong with a older bike or even vintage one. I recently restored one vintage touring/road bike and I love to ride it. Waiting for sunny days to hit the road to the Adriatic Sea and back.

@@guyonthebike With some creativity, you can go even cheaper. I bought a vintage 21 speed steel framed road bike. I cold set the frame to accept disc brakes and a wider cassette. I got some new hubs and used rims from a more recent rim brake bike, and I built some new wheels. Bought a flared carbon fork from China for under a hundred bucks; new handlebars, brifters, stem, 1x crank, pedals, chain, brakes, cables, tires etc... all from China as well. I found a used 2010s era ultegra derailleur for $15 at my local coop. Total build including frame came out to $420. I built it up a bit more as a gravel bike, opting for 650b wheels, a 1x drive train, hybrid-hydraulic disc brakes, a flared fork, and an integrated dropper post.
If you take your time and look for ways to save, you can build something great for cheap. I'm already working on my next project, and soon someone else will get a sweet deal on a killer bike.

I never noticed Curtis' proper full-blown Masshole accent. Gives him a ton of character and makes him very unintentionally funny. He was a fantastic co-host of this video.
Also keep in mind, Jeremy is literally a legend in USA CX. He'd destroy most of us on that budget bike. Amazing what he's still able to do while not on a pro training program and on such a lesser bike.
Super fun segment. Nice dose of cross where we don't have any in my region (RI/MA) this season.

Great cap to this series! A few years ago, I didn't even know what cyclocross was, I went to buy a gravel bike and ended up with a $600 used Focus Mares AX and it opened my eyes to CX. It's a crazy sport that is somewhat hard to explain... it's probably the most inviting of all "cycling racing" options out there... and I think the best summary I can say for the atmosphere at or during a CX race is simply intoxicating. I met J-Pow at Trek CX Cup last year and it was so much fun, my only regret was not planning my entire weekend to be at Trek. I only raced once and missed spectating at the big race. For anybody remotely interested in CX, search for your local clubs and see if there is a race near you and just go out and enjoy it! If you're lucky, there might even be a club that sets up a practice course, for weekly skills training!

I used microshift r8 and claris components, and some bottom of the barrel wheels I got from REI. It wasn't perfect, like with the rear wheel spacing, but it worked to get my into CX and now I have a proper bike. Problem around the Boston area as well as current times is everyone is overvaluing their junk bikes, so I think it's harder to do fun stuff like this on a budget when a lot of these bikes are going for $200+ when they should only be worth like $100-150. But it was fun, now I'm looking to maybe get a beater MTB and make it a little better

Never thought gcn would be trying to appeal to the Everyman. Good to see. Dig Jeremy.

@Jeremy Powers I am relieved to hear that this was an entomological error on my part.

Wow, that was waaay closer than I thought it would be. Looks like CX isn't that much about the bike after all. Also Jeremy is a beast, I bet he would make it very hard to win for that guy on a nice bike.

Thanks for a great video Jeremy. No BS here. We all WANT the latest and greatest but don't let it get in the way of ENJOYING bike riding. What you want is way different from what you NEED. I want that $10k bike, but, I'm having a blast riding my 11 year old Haro hard tail and just got my hand on a 2021 Diverge Base E5 for just over $1,200.00 including Uncle Sam's piece. Make it a priority to ENJOY the ride.

Great series! Loved the approach of building a capable machine while focusing on the fun / $ ratio. Would be cool to see you run this in a local CX race once things start up again.
