  • The Beer House Murder of 1862. Known as Joiner’s Arms as a Beer House serving the locals and folk from the nearby workhouse.
However, it was the scene of a notorious, dark murder of the landlady Anne Walne, which caused local & national sensation, even covered by the Times of London. Ann Walne was described as being thrifty, economical and almost miserly in habit. It’s widespread belief she hoarded and hidden a large sums of money in the house.
The evening of 10th November 1862 was a foul night, sleeting and snowing. Joseph Ward, her neighbour from a local workhouse, came round at about 8 o’clock, as he always did, to milk the cows and to close her shutters; he left her alive and well.
He went back about 7’ the following morning to help out but he was surprised to see no light in the house and the shutters still closed. He became alarmed when he encountered some obstruction inside the front door, which prevented him from opening it.
So he went to near-by farmhouse for help, William Pye, who lived at Ward Green, they both climbed in through an open window shouting for her but having no reply, they went upstairs into her bedroom where they saw her; she had been tied to the bed frame and was all bloody about her head; she was cold, gagged and was obviously long dead.
A police sergeant observed that a clock in the room had stopped at 17 minutes past 2; he thought that one of the intruders might have searched inside the case to see if her money was hidden there and had disturbed the pendulum and in the snow there were the footprints of four different pairs of boots but the marks were indistinct.
A long and complex investigation took place even having suspicion of folk from the workhouse. The police offered a reward of £100 to anyone giving information leading to the arrest and conviction this was a huge sum of money (perhaps £100,000 today).
This caught the attention of Thomas Bowling, from Samlesbury a well known poacher who had many convictions for a series of low-grade offences. Thomas provided a statement knowing the details of the murder but wanted to turn the evidence thus not to be implicated.
Thus in the end according to official papers a Duncan McPhail, Daniel Carr, George Woods and Benjamin Hartley not having the fear of God before their eyes but being moved and seduced by the instigation of the Devil with force and arms did feloniously, wilfully and out of their malice murdered Anne Walne.
The trial took place in St. George’s Hall, in Liverpool; where Mr Baron Martin passed sentence. He said that they had been convicted of a most dreadful and barbarous murder as he placed the black cap upon his head and passed sentence of death. They were publicly hung in 1863 at Tyburn prison gallows in Middlesex were among many spectators there was also over 1000 people that made the excursion from Blackburn, on special trains not to miss the hanging.
    • Later 1897 the beer-house changed its name to the Setter’s Arms.
    • The building then continued as a small farm known as ‘Setter’s Farm’ before being sold and used as a private home before coming abandoned.
    Haunting details
In Jan 23’ an urban explorer reported hearing creeping up the staircase while exploring the property. Objects remains reflecting the last owner of the property included a National Fires Service uniform dating from the 1960s alongside a faded photograph of the firemen.
Other explorers and investigators have seen dark shadows, heard voices and seen objects move in the deserted home.
Is this the Spirit of murdered Anne Walne continuing to protect here property? If so, it’s time for GhostTV to unveil the paranormal of Setter’s Farm.
