- If the future is electric, then the Back To The Future car has arrived-at least as an electric concept. The famous DeLorean DMC-12 gull-wing, stainless steel car is back from the reincarnated DeLorean Motor Company. On Tuesday it revealed its Alpha5 concept car as an all-electric DeLorean with strong Porsche vibes.
DMC, which is no longer the failed auto company started by John DeLorean in 1975, but a rebooted classic car parts brand, first teased a product revival in April. This week, the first images and basic details of the pre-production car were released about the Alpha5, including its name.
The same firm which designed the original DMC-12 in the 1970s, Italdesign, is behind the new electrified version’s styling. Now owned by Volkswagen AG, the Alpha5 bears an unmistakable resemblance to Italdesign’s 2019 DaVinci concept car and the hallmarks of other redesign Italdesign ideas, as well as some trademark DeLorean ones.

They should still make a classic version, with virtually identical appearance to the original, but with modern technology under the hood, like the EV drivetrain. Essentially a "resto mod"

I agree with that they should just leave the car as is but do away with the gas powered engine and put in EV’s and hydrogen power engine’s. Leave the Delorean car in it’s original form the way we all know it.
not many would pay for it lol, but a modern version of it like the volkswagen concept van which retains the classic look but modernises it a bit then it would be nice.. this looks like a completely new car with just the deLorean brand slap on it

You want a DeLorean body type car, but in cool and fast and actually well made? Get a 1978 BMW M1. Now THAT is a seriously good car from the era, and with racing pedigree as well.

If you are a small startup with no billions of dollars to spare, a car that looks like every other EV is safe, and is guaranteed to sell. Many startups fail here because they try too hard to be different, to do something no one else is doing.

It's not the same, although the engine of the 80's Delorean is not much, the design of the car is great. Can't they design the same model with the respective mechanical and technological improvements of the car? Everyone wants the original Delorean car from the 80's, the car is already patented in the "Back to the Future" movies.

I think the overall shape is too rounded, needs to be bit more boxy, sharp and angular like the classic.
I believe newer safety laws for cars mean a more boxy design for a car are illegal in a lot of countries

This all sounds like one giant scam. You buy the NFT first, get a car without motors or battery second. When you try to sue, the legal defense will be “You got your value by getting the NFT” and “ The contratct specifically said the car wasn’t street legal.”

This just looks like your other run of the mill EV car that you see today, It doesn't even remotely resembled the classic look of a 80's DMC-12 besides the rear window louvers and gullwing doors, Tela's cyber truck resembles the 80's DMC-12 more than this, and it's a truck.

Too rounded. It needs to be sharper, bit more boxy and have that front rectangular headlight, but with LED instead and DLR.

Many people see these announcement videos and think these companies will be the next Tesla. In reality, anyone can make cool promotional videos and design a one-off concept car. These companies are no where close to being able to actually manufacture these vehicles in high quantities, like Tesla is working on.

Since this is 100% going for the nostalgia and emotional factor to stand out from the 100 other EVs out there, why doesn't it have the original logo? Sure, have modern DeLorean branding in the rear, but you have to have that DMC logo in the front. What's the point of even calling it a DeLorean if you don't go all in on nostalgia?

A few days ago Hyundai announced its 1974 Pony Coupe-based hydrogen car, which was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro before the DMC12. How ironic that a car with the same designer's Heritage was unveiled in the same year!
I think that it would be in their best interest to forget the whole "not street legal" thing. People may really like the idea of a new Delorean but they are going to want to see a car without any odd quirks.The original got the reputation of being under powered and it haunted their existence.You don't want people to attach something like that to the new one.
I had a 1981 Volvo 264 which is a 240 with the same power train as the old DeLorean. it was horrible for power and gas mileage. I like this new car, but would t speculate on it's success. I think the name is still a novelty to the average consumer. they need to step away from the back to the future stuff if they want to be a serious contender in the market. unless that niche is what they're after...

With the exception of the gull wing doors, there is not so much as a hint of the Delorean DMC-12 in the EV Concept Car.

Ooph! I LOVE the idea of rebooting the DeLorean, but I dislike the rounded front and rear ends. Gimme the more square design of the original, and I'm onboard.

Style has a bleak meaning when mechanical efficiency becomes a priority for engineers working with designers, especially to current standards. Hard edges are the least efficient design in terms of aerodynamics coefficients, and since its an ev they cant afford to make that flaw.

@@johnnygoods1232 The overall profile and lines look very much like a Tesla. It wouldn't be a stretch to imagine a Tesla body modified with fancy taillights, rear glass cover and gull wings. While I don't think the car looks bad, it's kind of boring. They should've gone with a more retro look IMO.
The updated Countach was done really well. This however hardly resembles the original DeLorean. It's just like any sporty sedan. What a shame.

I was disappointed with this car at 1st because I wanted them to produce a follow up to the original but as a standalone piece, it's quite beautiful. But, there is a beautiful render that pays homage to the original. I hope they see it.

I wish it had more homage to the original DMC-12. Bolder angles, stainless steel (at least stainless steel looking), LED square lights in the front, LED hashed taillights in the rear, and way more prominent louvres. Keep the DMC logo in the front.
Why is it called the Alpha5? That's the best they could do? Why not the DMC-88 or DMC-JD (in honor of John DeLorean)? Even DMC-EV as cliché as it is sounds better than Alpha5.
Like others have stated, the Cybertruck looks more like a DeLorean DMC-12 than this. The fact the initial 88 are tied to NFTs is laughable and it's not even street legal? But the ones sold after the first 88 will be "street legal"...why? Who would take this out on the track?
This is a disappointing step for the "next" DeLorean besides it being electric, which is fitting for an original car that looked like it was from the future. Anyway, rant over. All this vehicle does is make me appreciate the DMC-12 even more.

Good to hear the versatility these new vehicles will have in not just being EVs. Besides also having a regular V8 engine, they also plan to use hydrogen-powered engines? These guys are definitely looking to the future, and while I'm a bit iffy on the cars being designed outside the US, as long as it helps bring Delorean back to life like never before, then it's fine by me. :D

Do your homework on Giugiaro..he has nothing to do with Italdesign since he sold it off to Lamborghini in 2010. This car is a refreshened DaVinci by Italdesign.
