He killed his mama. He has to die.
The chills hit when he shows the coin and the zoom on Shaw’s face
If only Shaw could say "Martha"
Daamn. Charles had to feel the pain of the coin ripping through his head WHILE also maintaining control of the villain to protect Eric. He could've broken control but he really believes in Eric. Great rivalry between them but much respect they have for each other.
charles cant release him from hold (cause he will kill them both without hesitation after that helmet steal)
The only inaccuracy is that Charles was feeling the coin through his head. The brain actually can't feel pain when you cut it. I know because Im a doctor.
@@rg2613 there is a lot of stuff before your brain, however. Having a hole in your head the size of a coin hurts. Feeling it move through your head slowly hurts. Feeling it come out hurts. There is plenty of stuff in your head connected to nerves, and Charles has to maintain control all the while feeling all that, because if he doesn't, the villain will immediately kill Eric. It's one of Charles' most insane durability feats ( mental / pain endurance ) , no wonder he's screaming
@@rg2613 Ummm... In past movies.... Charles can tap into people memories. Feel thier pain. No body truly know except him... We cant say what he can feel!

Man, it's a crime Michael Fassbender doesn't have much, much, much more movies under his belt. He is absolutely perfect as the slow talking, stoic character. His acting style is like a greek statue come to life.
its unfortunate but i think after xmen was over, iirc he chose some bad projects? that looked good on production level like Assassin's creed and Prometheus, but they all kinda went out in a whimper instead of propelling him. I dont think his career completely recovered since but nice to see him in that new Killer movie
@@RDSRELOADED On a personal level I think even movies like Prometheus propelled him. He absolutely aced his role as the android. I think the issue is more about how hard it is to find a role for him. It's really hard to write a stoic, cool character without making it cringe. I don't know.

They're lucky Charles is such a good guy. He could solo almost everyone in here. Like he could've made Shaw just tear off his own head or something.
Even without the helmet, Shaw has a degree of psychic resistance. Xavier could barely hold him in place, I don’t think he would be able to coerce Shaw into ripping his own head off
Charles could do that to all now mutants though. A few billion people.

just a reminder that Charles was feeling Shaw's pain in addition to the strain of holding him mentally. He could've released shaw to avoid danger but he knows this is important for Erik as well. Mad lad!
Had Charles released Shaw, Erik would’ve been killed. It’s actually for Erik to choose, and he chose to revenge and kill Charles (well telepathically but metaphorically too), despite his friend’s making every effort to save him. I think that’s the point.
The twitch in Magneto's eye too may be a moment of realization that he has to in a sense kill/take from Charles in the act.
@@KoolRanqe can’t agree more, and I’d like to imagine that Erik by then truly knows why Charles said “killing (Shaw) doesn’t bring you piece. It doesn’t, and you can tell from those eyes.

Poetic justice at its finest
I always loved the transition between Shaw getting his head pierced by the coin and Charles screaming brutally in pain.
The director had quite a creativity with this X-Men movie.
Placing his cheek on Shaw's raised hand to relate to him is a nice touch. The whole movie is heartfelt writing.
Personally I think that was just to make it worse for Shaw, letting him see his death in advance.
Great acting in all aspects too. Wish they didnt ruin it with Phoenix
To say it was a superhero film that has to be one of the most effective, cold killings put to film. The relentless movement of the coin with all Eric's power & emotion powering it. Eric could have ripped him apart but instead he kills him with poetic justice, using the coin that decided the fate of his mother to seal his demise. Brilliant.
It was indeed poetic justice but it was also the only real way to kill Shaw given his power. Shaw could absorb kinetic energy and turn it into power he could store and use. I read that the comic book version of Shaw would routinely have his subordinates beat him up, receiving no damage in the process and instead get stronger as his body absorbed the kinetic energy from the blows. Erik moved the coin so slowly that it didn't generate enough kinetic energy for Shaw's power to activate and absorb it. I suppose he could technically use any small piece of metal to do it but anything too big to rip him apart wouldn't work.
@@lordtrinen2249 brilliant reply & correct in that Shaw can absorb kinetic energy. When I said ripped him apart I'm talking about wrapping his limbs in Metal & pulling or cutting etc. Would be horrible ways to go but the way Eric despatched him just spoke to his personality, driven, relentless, emotional but cold & calculated when needed but most of all driven by revenge for himself, his mother & his people, both family & mutant kind. Eric produces the very coin that showed his powerlessness as an innocent child & sent it slowly inevitably towards Shaw, the situation now reversed. Shaw powerless, being able to do nothing as the coin slowly advanced. It is a scene with so many levels, rarely seen in superhero genre films.
@@lordtrinen2249 Well what about ripping Shaw from inside? Eric can control metalic objects, but also metal itself, like in the blood of every living animal (humans and mutants included) is Iron, one of the X-Men movies even did show us exactly that (I think the second one, with Ian McKellen's Magneto in prison), so why not ripping Shaw, now powerless, defenseless to pieces by pulling the iron in his blood? But yea, the coin was the exact way Eric wanted to kill Shaw with, he must've imagine that part many many times in his mind. That's why he kept this coin after all.
@@Croftice1 The only reason Erik was able to kill the guard like that is because Mystique injected him with extremely high levels of iron. I don't think there's enough normal levels of iron in a person's blood for Erik to do significant damage.
Very dramatic but would a coin through the head, moving so slowly, be enough to kill him. A lot of people survive worse head injuries.
Erik's attachment to his mother shows that he does care for humans (non-mutants). Erik's mother was defenceless when Sebastian Shaw killed her, and now Shaw is defenceless when Erik's kills him.
Well , he only liked her because she was his mother .In his ideology , she is still an inferior .Remember , Hitler's Pediatrician was a Jew and was still protected by him .
Nah, human, mutant or alien, mom is mom, don't care if I'm a different race and the killer is the same, the guy is going down.
Magneto was betting on X not freeing the guy because it would have caused a lot more damage.
X keeping the binding on when the guy was getting karma was dumb, would have been smarter to cut him off after the coin entered, as he lost anything to connect to.
He doesn't care for human, he cared for his mother, that's different
Magneto wife was human
I think he *cared* for humans.. but not anymore. I think of his mother as the last human he cared for.. and when she was murdered.. most of his humanity left him.
The cinematography in showing Xavier and Shaw's head in lockstep with the focus on the coin was brilliant in communicative visual storytelling
The soundtrack was banging too. All those horns go quiet once the coin makes it out the other side, making the whole thing seem like just a little thing, which it is and isn't.
It's just a coin, not a gun or a blade or any other weapon. And it's moving at a leaisurely pace as opposed to what any fight scene with a final boss would look like.
But then it immediately cuts to the blood soaked coin, which represents both Erik's past and future.
I think that silence afterwards really accentuates the gravitas of what's actually happening, which is Erik taking up Shaw's legacy and becoming the mutant supervillain Magneto. Reminiscent of the Sith from Star Wars.
can we just appreciate that the actor was able to stand still for such a long time? Incredible without even blinking.
They are called professional actors for a reason
And took a coin through the head with a total poker face.

I hated all these prequel x men movies. I'd say Logan takes the cake as the best.
Low bar.
Charles should’ve known being inside Erik’s mind. Erik never told him he would let this go.
I couldn’t agree more, if Charles says he has seen what Erik suffered at Shaw’s hand, he should be more understanding. And my Mom pointed this out, if he doesn’t want Erik to kill Shaw, what’s his plan, then? He can’t keep him frozen forever. And it’s obvious Shaw is too powerful and evil to left alive.
Sometimes the surest way to prevent someone from doing any more harm is to kill them. Charles himself said Shaw must be stopped.
He probably in denial he thinks that he can help him change now that not a bad thing, but i think charles learn a hard truth like any of us is that some people never change.
So I’m torn here. Because Charles was inside Erik’s head, he knows Erik is predisposed to an addiction to killing.
It’s not about Shaw here in fact Charles may have tried to kill him.
He doesn’t want his friend to become addicted.
"Being the better man"? No. The mutants will be hunted regardless. And if Shaw is this big of a threat, I don't see the problem. Why handcuff yourself in regards to your enemies?
I love how carefull they are to mirror shaw and Xavier's position in the camera as the coin is moving. It truly is like Magneto is killing both at that moment.
I like how charles could have stopped holding Shaw at any time but just screamed while keeping him in lockdown LOL
I’m not really sure what the plan was to stop Shaw aside from killing him. This guy was insane. I don’t think what Xavier went through was ok, but Magneto had every right to want revenge, and they had no other plan to contain him
I disagree for letting Eric have his revenge ...
But I agree someone need to kill Shaw once and for all, letting him alive is not an option ...
Couldn’t Charles just…brainwash him? Not a humane method definitely, but its about as cruel as murder and prof happens to be the strongest psychic. (At least I think he is at that point of time)

One of the most justified killings of all time. And one of the best ever put to film
Ultimately, Erik did the right thing. Because Shaw was far too dangerous to keep alive. His powers were God-level, and even if the US did find a way to imprison him, he'd easily find a way to break out, or utilize Hellfire's vast resources to, somehow, get released back into the world. And on top of that, he's a Nazi war criminal who would've been put on Tribunal.
The casting for young professor x and magneto were incredibly perfect. The originals are both sirs and I believe the new ones will be sirs in the future as well.
Whoever put James, Michael and Kevin in these roles deserves a thanks from humanity for all eternity.
Michael Fassbender and Tom Hiddleston both completely nerd out in their roles. It's just pure joy watching them embrace their characters.
I hope the MCU brings back James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Kevin Bacon at the minimum. The passion they put into their characterisations are a benchmark for how comic book characters should be played. RDJ was just being his real life self, so that doesn't count.
Fassbender was the absolute PERFECT choice for young Magneto
As much as the movies always show the disagreement between Charles and Erik, Erik was right in this situation. Not only getting revenge for Shaw killing his mother, but honestly, I don’t think they could have defeated Shaw any other way.
All he has to do is wrap a bunch of metal, slowly like he did with the coin, which immobilize him from gaining any kinetic energy, and keep him away from other forms of energy. Invincible comics did the same thing, when an enemy that has the power of absorbing energy, was beaten by Mark, by grabbing onto him until he use up all of his energy.

He trusts Charles not to freeze him; he just wants to enjoy his moment of vengeance without Charles' voice in his head
Epic moment in cinema. Kevin Bacon nailed it too.
Brings whole new meaning to the phrase "a penny for your thoughts."
You might say the coin came up heads.
More like a "Quarter for your thoughts" xD But yeah, I couldn't not think of either watching this scene.
I like that this is one of the few villains (only?) in the X-Men movie series to actually get taken out by Charles' telepathy. Usually Professor X gets taken out of commission for the movie, it's almost a cliche at this point. So it was cool to see him and Erik combine their powers to win this encounter.
Man! this gotta be one of the coolest movie scenes ever. I love Kevin Bacon in negative roles. Hell of an actor! cuz he is pretty convincing at least to me that he can be the same person in real life too with no remorse. That's what exactly a good actor does. I just loved him in Hollow Man.
actually going straight down the middle with a vertical orientation like that, the coin had a good chance of traversing the great longitudinal fissure between the hemispheres of Shaw's brain ... that was quite possibly survivable in real life. which means that, in a comic book universe, Shaw certainly did.
idk man, even if the cut doesnt kill right away, i doubt he could avoid death by blood loss and infection
Based on angles, it went through the left hemisphere
It went thru the left side of his brain tho
Well let's be honest, in terms of comic books, guys have come back from a hell of a lot worse than a coin to the brain. Next issue might open with shaw lying on a lab table with his brain getting repaired by mr.sinister or somebody. A wound being survivable or not doesn't have any effect on whether or not a character will be back.
Nah magnetto spin the coin inside there like making a juice.
By far one of my favorite movie scenes ever.
One of the best and creative kills in movie history.
I’ve always thought Magneto was right. What a badass
Same. I would have definitely joined him if I were a mutant.

Ba dum tssss!
Oh, Shawtup already!!
Oooh, you little Shaw-off, you
Boooo
What an original joke. It's not like it's on every single video of Shaws death. You are so special, ain't ya?
This scene honestly made me feel like this film edged close to rated r. So dark. Fassbender was fantastic as Magneto.
This entire movie criminally underrated
Magneto did the right thing , he not only avenged his mother , but also save humans and mutants from Shaw
The direction and camera work is awesome. To let us know how Xavier felt the pain the camera was taken in the same angle.
It’s a great scene, very iconic. Kevin Bacon is so juicy as a villain! And Michael Fassbender is a classic antihero as always
The music at this scene when the coin presses in Sebastian/Charles head
Such an underrated and powerful scene.
Beautifully done! 🥰
When the coin lands on heads this is what you are going to get. If I was Magneto, once the coin went past his fathers head, when the coin was falling to the ground, I would stop it falling by his fathers a*s and shoved inside his anus coming out of his urethra.
Sometimes doing the right thing, is to be ruthless. You can't walk through life and believe that you can be a "good guy" all the time. That won't help you accomplish your goals. So take a lesson from Magneto here and realize that being a hero isn't always about pacifism and utilizing peaceful means.
Magneto is my hero!
Same. I cannot stand Xavier. He is a weak simp.
If they up to no good just beat their ass again - Goku
Facts what’s even more crazy is even Jesus Christ himself will not always be peaceful and will not be such a good guy when he comes back to judge and destroy this world.
In the theater, I initially thought that this is the moment there Charles would lose control of his legs.
James Mcavoy is amazing.
Re-watching this 12 years after release and I cant think of another satisfying revenge kill that tops this tbh! There are plenty of contenders but all the symbolism and callback to how he killed his mother, moving the coin. Couldn't believe it when I first saw was like they are really nailing this scene and the pain Xavier feels holding Shaw as the alternative to letting him free would be far worse. Just makes me hate even more then they didn't keep the same director and essentially gave the franchise to Singer and Hugh Jackman as the main character in the next film really bad move I thought
Watch the original Punisher film with Thomas Jane. That was sweet revenge too. I won't spoil it if you haven't seen it though. I loved Magneto so much in this and he's easily one of my favorite mutants.
This is awful.
I remember seeing this in theaters back in the day. When Sebastian Shaw was doing his monologue I whispered to my wife "These views are Magneto's views, but you know he's not letting this go". When he produced the coin I knew 100% how he was going to kill him and laughed out loud, I couldn't wait.
Days of Future Past was great. Don't know anyone who doesn't like that movie.
xmen days of future was arguably the best xmen movie despite it having wolverine as the protagonist again😂
What was Charles' plan anyway if Erik didn't kill Shaw? Putting a physically invincible man into prison?
No silly. Operation Paperclip.
Sparing a nazi's life and hope Mr. President gave him a medal for it, or something. So fucking weird
@@tatianalyulkin410 Lies
good point, it's been so long since i've seen this I actually forgot what their plan in the film was. Couldn't have been well thought out because Charles really didn't seem confident in his ability to incapacitate him long term.
I wish it was one giant lie. But unfortunately it's not. Like the scumbag who's got the blood of Salvador Allende, Pablo Neruda and Victor Jara on his hands, America doesn't have allies- it's got interests. Wanna know about lies? For 40 years every frigging word the Blake Association had said to me was one gargantuan lie.
The coin with the blood got me really chilled!!!
I like to believe that Magneto counting down isn't a way to intimidate Shaw (considering he says "if you're still in there", he isn't sure if Shaw is even hearing or seeing him), but a way to warn Xavier about staying "connected" from Shaw's mind, to give him a chance to not feel the pain Shaw is about to feel.
Who would have guessed that Magneto got his iconic helmet from Kevin Bacon.
7 degrees of Kevin Bacon back at it again 😂
One of the most brutal and satisfying revenge scenes
He died without feeling any pain....he was freeze in time...
I won't called that a revenge ...
@@warsonggulch6998 it also wasn't brutal
@@warsonggulch6998He wasn't frozen in time, rather he was being mind-controlled and unable to move
@@warsonggulch6998 duh what do you think was the reason for Charles to scream?
there's something wrong with people that find this stuff satisfying
Fast-bender seems to be on the cusp of a great Role of his own. A mega Role!! his Alien Movies are iconic … and wasted performances as Walter and David
This is actually my favorite scene in all of the X-men movies
I like how they zoom in on shaws face like his facial expressions changed lmfao
Lol, I agree, it's one of my favorite parts of the scene. It zooms in and you can almost swear you can see his eyes saying "oh shit".
@@OtherDalfite in that moment, Shaw can't move anything and yet you can somehow see in his eyes that he is terrified and probably praying to Gods he didn't believe in 10 minutes ago.
That was a 1st class execution.
The match cuts between Shaw and Xavier - such good filmmaking here.
"Unfortunately, you killed my mother."
What a beautifully deliberate and complex scene. We feel the weight of these three men, their intentions, the emotional impact that this will have and everything that lead up to this moment. Because of that, this is neither grotesque nor explicit...it is serene and somber justice, that reinforces what we already know of Magneto's perspective and future character arc.
Bravo.
How touching, Shaw created Magneto yet caused him indescribable pain by murdering his mother. Shaw has a twisted mind claiming he has never hurt Erik. Once someone lives by "Superior ability breeds superior ambition," as in Shaw's and later Magneto's life, many moral and ethical principles become meaningless.
Except Magneto didn’t end up being as monstrous as Shaw was.
@@Bryndor_ Sure, Jan.
When Erik told "Schmidt/Shaw," "You are my creator"...it WASN'T intended as a compliment. But "Schmidt/Shaw," being a complete sociopath, didn't get it.
X Men: First Class is one of my favourite X Men films ever. That with Days of Future Past and X2 were the best in the series. I can’t believe studios haven’t given Matt Vaughn more comic book films to direct. He has such a great visual style, with dabs of humour, character development, emotional depth, some really gritty dramatic scenes. The relationship between Xavier and Magneto is so central to the x men story. If Matt Vaughn had done the follow up to Apocalypse, the franchise wouldn’t have faltered.
Looks like one of those jukebox quarters you find from time to time.
Two amazing actors!!
