Speed training is the key to filling the gap between your 3w and your driver. I hit an old Tour Edge Hot Launch 2 3w dead straight between 260-280 using an 80% swing (teed at 1"), and it's one of my most consistent clubs in my bag. I used to carry a driver but had a lot of trouble keeping it on target at long distances, and was only averaging 10-20y farther than my 3w. Did a lot of speed training with my 3w and now I can send balls out to 280-300 and onwards with a 100% swing (teed at 3/4"). Once you get a nice, hot clubhead speed going with a 3 wood and you start striking it clean off of a short tee, you'll be outdriving most people regardless of what they use.

Great video Ali. I have a problem hitting down on the ball with driver, I took a lesson with the local PGA Pro at my club on Tuesday past. He recommended the same adjustments you made in this video, e.g. tee it a bit higher, getting more spine tilt, ball just inside armpit, feel like you staying back a bit longer.
Well, I play of a handicap off 4. Solid ball striker with irons. Average around 250 yards with driver (smash factor low, comes out with a cut).
I played today implementing the changes, average around 285 yards, not a single cut or slice, hit more fairways than I normally do. Shot 74
So, what I'm trying to say is that the information shared by you definitely works 👏.....I hope that the viewers will implement these chances and obviously spend some time at the driving range.
PS. I'm waiting on the Cobra SZ Driver 🤪

You just showed how hard it is the get strike right with a teed up 3 wood, you almost topped it twice from trying not to sky it.

I used my 3wood for my driver for consistency. When I tee it up even a little I tend to sky it sometimes. It takes a little more distance, but if make it on the fairway at 220 I'm happy.

Great vid, easy to understand. Im ok with driver but would like more confidence with 3 wood so it’s more of a viable option, so spot on. Can you do a vid of exercises we can do at home to help us with consistency of swing plane while no golf or range to help with these shots. Thanks again

My brother has been using a Ping G400 3 wood Stretch for 4 years now as his driver. He outdrives us by at least 10 yards every time we play. I use a driver and use it maybe 2 times a round.

I’m a student of Alistair. I can vouch that this works. I hit 3-wood off a white or yellow castle tee. I have a great feel now for hitting up at impact. It HAS indeed helped me transform my driver swing. I can now swing up with driver, adding many yards and more importantly, confidence.
Ali may agree with this or not, but with me, swinging up and having an “in-to-out” swing direction go together. As the ball is placed further forward, club path at impact tends become very neutral, so it has greatly helped me reduce the slices, too.
I thoroughly recommend this video for people who find driver makes them nervous at the moment, you can transform your tee shots.

So, when using 3 wood, come in flat at impact off the floor. Come in ascending at impact off 1/2" tee, ball fwd in stance. Ok going to range tomorrow to work on this.

Hey Ali thanks for the video. Is there any good feels you know of to feel 'hitting up' through hands or arms through impact? I think what the real challenge is for me (and probably others) is that it is hard to feel what 'hitting up' on the ball feels like through impact if you don't already do it consistently. I'm a 10 hcp and with setup tweaks I have managed to hit long balls out the back of the range with little effort very occasionally but can't seem to get a feel and maintain it and keep falling back to short distance. In contrast, hitting irons of the ground gives me a more obvious feel that is easier to internalise i.e the feeling of taking a divot. It gives some really tangible feedback through the hands and is easy to repeat. If I could reliably preempt what the feel of a 'hitting up' impact feels like before swinging the club I'd have a better chance of creating it i.e. the feel in the hands. Any ideas?

thank you, teeing the 3 wood down low (that most instructors are dogmatic about) has not worked consistently for me.

I hit my 3 wood on average 260+ down the fairway, never using my driver again.

My 3 wood is so low profile that I’ll get under the ball if tee’d up too high. I can launch that ball up like a sand wedge and get nowhere if I get under it.
With that being said, I am currently getting used to 3 wood. Dead straight shots ONTO the fairway 220 to 240… can’t complaint with that. If I want to “give it the business” I’ll get 260 out of my 3 wood but start flirting with a slice or hook.
