  • This week, Aliona Kostornaia announced her engagement to Georgy Kunitsa. Midori Ito won gold at the ISU Adult Competition in Obertsdorf. Kurt Browning completed his final Stars on Ice Canada tour and was still the highlight of the show (30 years later). Piper Gilles revealed she was diagnosed with stage 1 ovarian cancer in December. The ISU gave Russian provisional quotas for the Junior Grand Prix and WADA announced 200 sanctions for Russian athletes from its investigation into the Moscow laboratory. Skaters from around the world are getting their new programs. We break it all down on the latest edition of 'This and That'.

    Bless Kostornaia. She's too impulsive for her own good. They posted a triple twist ON the ice this past week tho! She's a quick learner. You have to give her that. But I worry that he'll end up holding her back because from the videos of them she's clearly the better skater and jumper.

      From that one video I watched, he's just a bad skater. He almost tripped on some of the turns. I think the partnership is difficult and probably wouldn't work looking at the competition. I feel like their partnership is heading towards that moment when KMT saw MM when he tripped twice after throwing her lol. It's uncomfortable when one partner clearly blames the other for bad performance.

    I was at Stars on Ice in Anaheim last night, and it was so neat to see skaters skate live. (I hadn't for decades!) I got to see some of the programs that I've been watching all year. My husband, who doesn't know anything about figure skating, said he liked Alexa and Brandon's story telling, and right after we said that we walked by Alexa's husband in the corridor (it was intermission). I didn't know it would be Kurt's last Stars on Ice, he will be missed. I was so excited to see Isabeau skate her swan program! Nathan was cute, he got turned around and went to the wrong corner before he realized that wasn't the exiting corner :)

    Glad you chatted about the ITNY show. My husband and I were also squeezed into those cheap seats. We loved it all -- even the 3 girls in the swaddle ("Les Enfants") but espcially the final group number. My husband enjoyed the offbeat artsyness of it. I bought the tickets entirely to see Jason, whom I adore in an obsessive way, but those damn hockey barriers really ruined the Jason vibe for me. (We were in the 4th or 5th row....could not get any higher). I did attend US Nationals in San Jose, and had great seats. That Melancholy will still always be THE Jason moment for me.

    I am not surprised that Camden is taking time off from school. I took my skater daughter to Columbia for a tour. We did a test run to Chelsea Piers for her to try out the rink. It's not convenient or easy to get there, and the freestyle ice is very expensive and has limited hours. It would be fine for a recreational or collegiate skater, but I don't think it's an ideal place for an elite level skater.

    • @zackwilson8701
      @zackwilson8701 Před rokem +2

      Agreed. Camden still has a narrow window right now to really make his career happen. Even if the most he achieves is two or three years as the world's 5th through 8th best men's skater, that could translate into a world's silver team medal and an Olympic team silver medal in a handful of years. As long as he can manage to not get injured, being in his early to mid twenties isn't a huge deal in terms of his competitiveness. And right now there are only a handful of men who can do more than two quads, and of those, only Shoma and Ilia are consistent in landing them although we'll see about Yuma. If Camden can become the next/new Jason or Adam and accrue himself a big fan base while Nathan and Vincent are gone and Jason is (eventually) retired, he could potentially enjoy a lot of commercial success. After all, Ilia just shot himself in the foot with the fandom, so Camden should be able to capitalize on this timing to make a name for himself. He's widely liked, artistic, and has solid tech; he's a smart investment for the US Fed unless he has major injuries we don't know about.

But you never said the same thing to others like Olivia representing Spain. It will be more ridiculous if she with his new German born skater representing Spain. Tbh Kurakova is the example of skater who takes effort to learn the country she's representing. She has a home in Poland, trying to learn the language, train in Italy (not Russia, so she' not under the Russian system), etc. That's a lot more than anyone currently representing countries that they're not born in/ have ancestry

      Figure skating's boom period, (1992-1998,) was such a magic time for the sport. I don't know what could change that unless a new crop of American stars just kick everyone's butt for a 3-4 year period. Canada and the USA's golden age was really 1980-1994, (Canada's being 1984-94,) and that was really where the boom period comes from. That and the top stars competed in far more Worlds' and Olympics. You'd think with social media and youtube being so huge, that we would see the online world creating new stars of that size.
