The thing is, in Japan, local celebrities' fans tend to be... possessive almost, and therefore he'd want to keep his marriage as private as possible which gives some handicaps in the relationship.
The comments about Yuzuru were hilarious. Since no one knows his partner, I saw a lot of "Who is he marrying? The ice rink?", "Yuzuru and his skates forever" LMAO 😂

About Yuzuru’s statement:
He’s not just a national athlete or a celebrity in Japan, he’s almost like an idol. And the Japanese are *very* possessive over their idols (oshi).
Even a weatherwoman (Saya Hiyama) found to be dating a national tennis player caused the company’s stock to drop by ~10%. And this happened less than a month before Yuzuru’s statement.
It’s unfortunate but penning a very polite (keigo) letter with the majority of it placating fans and keeping his spouse anonymous is the best way to keep both of them safe.

Yuzuru is an idol in Japan. Some fans of idols get mad about people even just dating to the point where they will even attack the significant other. It is smart that he isn’t sharing anything about his fiancé. It will protect them.
I think it's just a cultural thing. Japan is very not into PDA. And Yuzuru is expected to treat these interviews/announcements/presscons/statements as business statements. He was probably speaking in Keigo.

@luvl1344 It is actually a way of protecting his partner. In Asian countries "idols" are almost seen as "public property" in a way. Fans seem to feel almost as if they are in a sort of "relationship" with their favorite idols and can get very very salty when they just date. The idol's partner - especially if they aren't also an "idol" - can be attacked by uber-fans. And those attacks can get pretty bad and include not only the partner but their family as well.
It is safer to take as much attention off of his partner as possible. Emphasizing himself and his fans is a very smart and necessary move.

Hello, Japanese person here. A reason for not talking about his partner in the announcement could very much be cultural. In Japan, PDA isn't seen as often, especially not in public figure- my aunt and uncle have been together over 20 years and have three children, yet they don't even sleep in the same room. I've never seen my friends parents hold hands or refer affectionately together. Also, Hanyu is a very public figure and he is protecting them from toxicity of the internet.
Sorry I'm curious, I hope you don't mind if I ask: do couples not even hug in private? Don't Japanese people also have a need for affection and love? Or do they, like, 'swallow it down' and hide the needs? :(
@@heyheyvicky1498 no obviously couples are still couples (can't speak for all) its just in public. younger people (such as my generation) are much more affectionate, like my boyfriend and I hold hands in public- whereas older generations see that and PDA as disrespectful to those around you in public spaces

The announcement just screams Yuzuru vibe since it's all about figure skating. I'm happy that Hanyu got married. From his previous interviews, he did mention about wanting to marry and have kids. Now that he's retired from competitive figure skating and becomes a professional figure skater, also just did an amazing solo ice show... It's just a good time to get married since it sounds like they may have been dating behind the scene for a while now.
Hanyu being cautious is understandable. Media can be toxic as well as supportive. He is a world star not just Japanese. Its time for him to leave his family and make his own.
Hanyu often does the unexpected so not a surprise for some.

yuzuru has always been a very private person, so his statement really isn't odd at all. especially considering his new spouse now has to live with the fact that her husband is on hundreds of bilboards and thousands of lockscreens, it is not surprising that they would want to keep her anonymous. i believe family registers are public japan, hence he had to make a statement (rather on his own terms to prevent the tabloids from running with it)

Yuzu's announcement is iconic lol, considering how private he is about his life outside of skating it doesn't surprise me though, the only reason the person would be announced is if they too were in the public eye which seemingly is not the case, congrats to them. Also checked out Vasilisa and Valery and they're good, I never really paid attention to ice dance, then after scott and tessa left I basically didn't care, might keep an eye on them, they have a lot of potential to get really big
Scott and Tessa are no longer skating together. They are both engaged or married already-not to each other.

tbh i'm not that surprised that yuzuru didn't go further into the topic, i have seen some reactions on twitter and it's honestly worrying that people felt sad/betrayed because of the announcement
From my limited knowledge of Japan, they never mention their significant other and are extremely private, unless they're marrying another celeb and it's hard to hide. There are so many celebs I had no idea were married, let alone had kids, and they had been for years. 🤣

Tbh, there's more going on with Diana and Gleb's marriage. TSL predicted that the Russians might start changing nationalities and competing for other countries since Russia was banned. There were even rumors of Eteri being a coach in the US. It was suspicious that Diana and Gleb haven't returned to Russia since the war and the Russians were banned. Dave shrewdly assumed that Diana (a US citizen) might have to marry Gleb to give him a green card so they can skate for the US. Well it looks like Dave was right, they did have a Vegas wedding (Diana was born in Vegas). Gleb also hasn't been back to Russia. They're very clearly gunning for a citizen for Gleb to keep him out of the war and military service. All the noise that Dave stirred up effectively made sure that the Smolkins can't represent the US or skate for USFS so they changed tactics. They now skate for Georgia. Marriages are a public record in Vegas so it was only a matter of checking records.

I don't think it was Dave preventing them from skating for the US. Even marrying an American citizen and getting a green card, he still would not get citizenship in time for Cortina. It takes too long here. An easier way came up and they were smart to grab it! I still think Eteri will become a coach in Miami some day! 🤣

Yuzu DID say back in 2015 when he was 20, he wanted to aim for marriage at 26/27 so he’s just a little late.
it's extremely common for japanese celebrities to date very out of the public eye and only announce it once marriage is in the cards. Often even just after getting married AND having a child. sometimes it all just comes out at once. They usually say who they're marrying if it's another celebrity and otherwise it'll often just say "to a non-celebrity (man/woman)"
Maybe he delivered the news that way so that the rabid fanyu doesn't think he's leaving them. He's trying to pacify them? "I still love you all, even though I'm getting married." ? Maybe he didnt say the fiancé's name bcuz the fanyu will attack her/him out of jealousy.

Jpop fan here. Japanese celebrities, name it, idols, actresses/actors, voice actors/actresses, CZcams streamers, TV announcers... Anyone in the public eye announces marriage beforehand or after the fact. And yes, kpop idols doing this is modeled after Japanese culture since 2000s, when Korean celebrities started selling in Japan, Japanese have been doing so since the 90s.
Japanese celebrities getting a public Instagram or Twitter depends on their agency, and the most popular ones just barely got theirs.
Kpop artists sometimes start with their accounts from the start, since they market appearance much more, they also sell image. A bit different, but these announcements are way more common in Japanese culture than in Korean culture.

I never heard of his words about Putin, that's a very unfortunate statement if it's true, but we need to consider that in authoritarian regimes, it is really difficult and dangerous for people to criticize and speak negatively about the leader of the country. Mark has never openly said he supports the war, so I don't think it's fair to label him as pro-war. For instance, some other skaters such as Katsalapov/Sinitsina, Morozov/Tarasova, Sotnikova and Lipnitskaya have openly said they support the war and wore Z symbols, but not Mark

Speaking of Ice Dance, you should really take a look at Hannah Lim and Ye Quan, representing Korea. I discovered them on the junior circuit and to me they are such a promising team. They are so good at acting (especially Hannah but Ye has definitely been catching up to her this past season), such good performers and have endearing personalities. This year they'll compete as seniors for the first time. I can't wait to see them grow, they're such a good team. I suggest you watch their free dance to Danse Macabre from the junior worlds 2023.

I'm so happy for Yuzuru💕💕💕 But it really is true that he seemed to beg for support, almost like he was scared to announce his marriage and scared of his fans. It makes me so sad that he felt like he had to almost ask for forgiveness and reassure that he is still going to skate and still cares about his fans :( I really was suprised and felt a bit pity for him because he seemed so insecure, but I wouldn't consider the announcement weird, he is such a private person and that kind of official announcements do seem typical for asian idol🤔 People in japan seem to be so possessive of their idols, so he propably just wanted to play it safely and not mention anything extra that could stir up the media, he is sooo famous there

About the Japanese marriage announcement culture (I personally hate that they have to announce anything), usually they say who's the partner is if they are both famous, and if not, they just say 一般人の方と, which is just saying some random normal person that ain't famous. So it is interesting that he mentioned neither.

I am a huge fan of Yuzuru Hanyu the skater, the humanitarian, the funny guff-ball and cute and of course very handsome guy I watch on TV. Is he gay, is he straight, bi doesn't matter, I also see a real human being who deserves a private life, hopefully a happy private life. Let him be. The spouse on the other hand must be a very strong person for taking up a life-long relation with such a beloved person. From my understanding of Japanese culture, it's very common to write a long paragraph to thank their fans even though the announcement is something about their personal life. But not announcing whom he is married to is unusual.

In Eastern Europe it is typical to have only few month between engagement and wedding. The engagement isn’t usually celebrated as much. And it takes on average three month from the day you go to registry office till actual ceremony. (Can be more, it depends). Sometimes even few weeks. 🤷🏻♀️
