HEAVY Train Can't Make It Up Hill & Stalls, My Best Short Line Railroad Video Ever! Must See Video!

- Extra Heavy Train Stalls Out On Steep Grade & Terrible Driver Almost Gets Car Hit With Railroad Crossing Gate! Big Grain & Rock Train fights gravity on a long, steep and curvy grade in Williamsburg, Ohio on short line railroad Cincinnati Eastern Railroad CCET. This is a long and heavy train loaded with grain, railroad cross ties and rock. With business picking up dramatically over the past couple of years, the trains are getting longer and heavier. I think this is my best CCET video yet.
First we see the train in Mount Orab, Ohio coming across the High Street railroad crossing. Notice the old train station and historic buildings. We also see remnants of 2 railroad sidings. This is a perfect area for model railroad enthusiasts.
Next we see the train attacking the steep grade in Williamsburg, Ohio. It kept slowing down until it finally stopped and rolled back a little when the slack came out. It might have made it if there had not been a slow order in place on the hill. The engineer called the conductor on the radio and had him cut the train in half. The first section of the train went a short distance to Afton Yard and left the cars on a siding there. The locomotives ran lite back to the remaining section of the train that consisted of hopper cars loaded with rock. We see the train making the two trips to Afton where the train was put back together. Notice the terrible driver in the video who wasn't paying attention. The lights were flashing, bells ringing and the gates coming down before she got to the crossing. She got surprised, stopped the car next to the crossing and then backed up with the crossing gate just missing the top of her car. This is the same crossing that I filmed a school bus getting hit with a crossing gate and the bus remaining in place with the train passing.
I also filmed the train at a couple of other railroad crossings before it got to Williamsburg. They will be included in another video due to the length of this video. One of the crossings is next to a long dip in the track which is pretty cool to watch the train go down and up that section. The other crossing is one of my favourites because it has a house next to the crossing with a perfect view of the trains and there is a maintenance of way siding there that is still active.

Good morning from your German fan, and to all railway fans, have all a nice weekend. 👍 🇺🇸 🇩🇪.
Ich bin in Schweinfurt geboren und in Bergrheinfeld aufgewachsen. Wohne schon 64 Jahren in America.
Hello Germany
Thank you and wish you a great weekend . My great grandmother was German , gave me a good start in life .
Your black cat is cute. We just took in a black cat a couple of weeks ago. Black cats aren’t scary. They’re awesome AF😂
That's live action son! Turning 1 train into 2. Nice.
I counted 16 grain cars and 2 railroad ties and 20 rock hoppers. Now, that's a HEAVY train!
I had to look twice to make sure of the count. Great train and outstanding video, sir!
You got that right! I miscounted . Thanks for the correction
Well, whoever put out the slow order wasn't thinking about a rock train :) No lack of action that day! Very cool :) You are right about the time change - it would be dark already.
Locomotive was working HARD. Great stuff man.
Good Morning
Good Morning
Good Morning JawTooth and Mrs JawTooth
Another AWESOME video
Good morning!
Great catch! 38 cars is more than the single digit numbers they were pulling last year which is a sign of growing business. Neat catch between this train, signals, and history there!!
Yes on the insulators P.R.R.Embossed their insulators B and O did and a few other railroads did also. Thumbs up on the video.
Ccet great short line great train action antique telephone pole wiring signal lights very cool video thanks Jaw tooth
Unfortunate occurrence for the crew, but it sure made for interesting viewing. Another good video.
Neat video JT! CE always has nice clean power. It shows pride in their operation. I appreciate the smaller rail line videos like this one. Thank very much! 😊😊😊😊❤❤❤❤
Thank you very much!
@@JawTooth You are so welcome JT. 😃
They had a heavy load! They need to get a few more 40-2s. Lol That was a great video. Thanks for sharing
Great video keep up the good work God bless from GA stay safe
They need another locomotive 😂 great video again from me in Lancashire, England, UK.
Great luck catching the stall, thanks for waiting out the double too! Glad you had a friendly crew as well.
Thanks for sharing, keep'em coming 👍 👍
Another grand video…..as always! Thanks Mike!
Like82, very nice video 👍🖐️
Good and bad news on doubling the hill. Good to see an increase in revenue traffic, bad slows down operations. They need another 3000 hp unit.
Where’s the old general electrics when you need them?
Thanks for helping the crew and any crew when their are operating issues, good man…..ms~~~
I want to hang out with this guy for a day watching trains.
I came for rooster intro🤘🏻
Stayed for trains 🤣
Approximately eight cars behind the locomotives was an old Soo Line car. As someone originally from Michigan's upper peninsula that was a treat for me to see.
I spotted that too. 👍
Yeah, I saw that SOO Line hooper also at about 9:18.
I'm from Milwaukee and I watch for SOO, C&NW, Milwaukee Road and Wisconsin Central cars.
Love that opening. Look at how compressed those springs are! I always mess with my mom - tell her it's fall forward and spring back.
Your knowledge, hard work and dedication is why I keep watching your videos. Keep up the good work.
Jaw Tooth on the scene reporting! Live action, son.
The CE power was sounding good pulling that heavy train up the hill! 😊😊❤❤ I imagine the crew was rather embarrassed when they got stuck. I know I would be! 😊😊😊😊❤❤❤❤
Good Morning JT, great video as always
Now that’s what I call awesome, this shortline really puts on a show. These crews really earn their money. I sure would’ve liked to have seen this line under NS and N&W ownership. The fact that they had to double the hill splitting up their train indicates how steep that hill is. Nice to see, although not in service, an old N&W CPL signal still standing. Your right, this is your best shortline video ever. The CCET is an awesome short line. Thanks JT.
Nancy, back in 1986 I was on a rail gang working on that line, with dad, Dennis A Ahearn. We all called him Dad.
@@gusshadleythelunaticfromar7125 That’s so cool!!👍🏼 thanks for sharing
Good morning awesome video
Great Video, Thank You Jaw Tooth! They needed the third EMD unit or the old U boat with the SD-40. Experience is a great teacher, again Many Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Hey Brian keep an eye on that I Thought We Were All Aboard The Same Train Of Thought.grain car. It's out there somewhere. Those old signals are probably 100 years old. Cool video.
The local, state and world famous jaw toofie. Great video son.
Yes! Thank you!
Great 👍 Content. Wishing You -Fair Winds & Calm Sea's Captain Jaw Tooth ⛵
Thank you kindly
nice catch. reminded me of the time when i was kid, a Chicago and Northwestern train stalled by where i lived. the engineer was a nice guy. i asked him how much weight he was pulling. it was around 10,000 tons. this was a couple of years before the UP took it over. i wish i could remember what the locomotives were.
I may have known that hogger, was it in Chicago, or the suburbs? When I started there in the early 70s, we'd get a job to deliver loaded gons to the IHB RR on the night shift and would usually stall and need a shove up the steep hill from the east end of yard 4, having to wait a half hour or more for the shove from another yard job.Location wise that was just west of Lake street and 25th Ave Melrose Park.
Good video, JT, I could hear the wheel slip happening on that 2nd pull at about 22:30. You'd think they'd let them have a back to back consist instead of them traveling bass ackwards long hood leading across all those road x-ings. Must be a heck of a grade to strain 2 locos with those short cuts.
Stalling? I'm like that when I'm hill walking.. 😆
Thank you very much for this very nice video to start this weekend very well! ✨✨👍Merci beaucoup ! 🙏
6 crossings, and half a town. Damn!
You was in the right place at the right time again ... Good catch Son ...
Another great video John tooth thank you very much God bless when I saw and you hear my cats they want to go outside when you saw the caboose down there that was awesome have a given brother God bless
You are very welcome and God bless you also David!
A friend of mine used to work for the N&W. He had several names for that road--the "No Way", "Nothing Works", or "Not Worth" it! LOL! He was a brakeman for the N&W.
Cool! I used to watch the N&W as a child
Outstanding video .
I am somewhat new to the Jawtooth universe..but this might be the best short line video I have seen from you. Great camera work and commentary. Appreciate these videos very much.
Good video Jawtooth
Thanks, J.T. I love to see how the story ends. You tell us a lot of what the conductors need to do. But in this case, my hat is off to the engineer who had to, not once, but twice, start out from a dead stop, pulling that heavy load up hill, without a wheel slip. That takes a very skilled hand on the throttle!
I enjoyed that video 👍👍
Thanks London!
Hi You can't miss that low rumble of a diesel engine. I can almost feel it in my chair. Love your videos. Larry
Thanks 👍
Love the pets especially the kitty
Hey, When I was a Police Officer I use to help out Csx and Kcs . Behind my house where I use to live was Csx tracks that went from Birmingham to Tuscaloosa and to the Mines . It was a 7% grade they would have to cut the Trains sometimes . They would call me to help out. I would give the crew rides . I always liked them crew packs and the bottle waters they had on the Engines . There was a crossing right behind my house and they would call me and tell me they left some stuff at the crossing for me. Those where some Awesome times .
SD40-2. Serious 70s rail power, with a great horn sound.
Yes, that unit is a workhorse. SD40 is one of my favourite locomotives. I use to love them when I was little
Nice trains, cuddling cat and friendly dog. Nice land too
Thank you very much!
nevewr seen that JT... train could not make it up the hill and had to stop, return, and cut the train in two pieces. wow
I remember back around 7 years ago or so when something similar happened near Winchester, Ohio on this line. They had a short grain train with one Geep. The locomotive was low on fuel, the sanders were not working and the rails were wet. The train stalled with only about 5 loaded grain cars and they had to run the locomotive back to the shop near Newtown, make repairs and come back the next day. I have that old video somewhere on here
@@JawTooth it's incredible what your knowledge of trains in your area... I have a Cincinnati map so I can try to pinpoint where you are sometimes... by the way... you say the word cool as many times as it is relavant and that is ''cool''... don't listen to any complainers.. haha on them... later boss... i call everyone boss... espically my past wife. lol bye i'm retired (-- i call it retard -- to make people laugh... a laugh cures many ails. bye for now JT... i always look for you to feed the duck.
My two favorite locos, and they were workin hard! Another great video JT!👍👍
Boy that wore me out just watching!
Darn good work Jawtooth!
Amazing freight trains!👍🚂
That was a great video good job.
I always enjoy your videos, but I love your endings with your dogs and I love 💕 the sweet little black 🐈⬛ cat... Thanks ever so much.
Have a wonderful weekend!!!
You would think that knowing the steepness of that hill that they would throw a couple of helper engines on the heavy trains.
Should've threw some xtra power in the back as pushers! Nice video brother!! I have to say that this is you're best video yet! 👍👍
That hogger in the long hood forward blows a mean whistle...... perfect.
Nice video of this heavy Cincinnati Eastern train having trouble making it up steep grade in Williamsburg, Ohio, Jaw Tooth! The two engines were working hard to get the loaded stone hopper cars up the grade. The lady who backed her car behind the gate before it came down did not have to go through that maneuver. She could have easily driven across the tracks before the train arrived at the crossing. Moe than likely she thought that the train was moving faster than it was moving so she opted to back up behind the gate. I am glad that you caught this train before Daylight Saving Time ended so that y capture the doubling of the steep grade in Williamsburg, Ohio.
Or paranoid that a cop would see her cross against the active crossing lights. I was a passenger in a friend's car in Chicago Heights, Ill. a long time ago and we came to a RR crossing. He slowed down before the crossing and we were about 30 feet from the tracks when the crossing lights came on and you could see the train was still a distance away. He locked it down right there and backed up to avoid the barricade arm that was dropping while the car behind us hit the left lane and flew past us and crossed the tracks. I said "Wow man, you had plenty of time to get across. What's up with you?" He said "My dad had this happen to him here once and he went on and crossed the tracks. A city cop a couple of cars back saw him and the cop pulled out and ran the crossing lights himself to stop my dad and write him a $500 ticket, so yeah I'm not gonna take that chance."
@@larrywalker7759Wow! That was a hefty fine for crossing the tracks in the Heights. In the past I have seen a lot of cars go around the gates at Park/Lincoln Avenue in Dalton, Illinois. I never saw a Dolton Police car pursue anyone for going around the gates even though the Dolton Police Department is right there.
@@thomasmackowiak The incident where I was in the car with my friend happened around 1990. I am not sure if we were actually still in Chicago Heights proper but he and his family lived in Chicago Heights. As to the veracity of his story all I can say is that was what he told me. He also told me that if you ran out of gas on the freeways in Chicago that you would pay a $500 fine and your car would be towed. Maybe this was just his style of embellishing stories or something but I had no reason to think he was not telling the truth.
I know that nowadays in highway construction work zones we see signs warning a $500 fine for speeding.
Mesmerizing! Your camera work gets better every time - Thanks!
Thanks for watching !
I can only imagine what it was like when all those spurs were active! That said, I’d love to see the whole line active again, with a lot mor business. Hopefully they will get so much more business that they will reactivate the position light signals and of course get more units!
Hi Jawtooth, You have great Christmas and New year. You kept me going.
Thank you from Scotland.
Happy holidays!
Little Hunter Harrison Special!!!! Short-line
Style
Great video as always JT . That sure was some load they were moving. They should have had a helper DMU pushing at the back and probably would have made it up the gradient.
Always ready to lend a hand “Mr. Tooth” Good on Ya”
I got 38 cars on that train. I don't remember any CE trains being that long before. That was pretty cool.
Now this is what we call exciting! To see a locomotive not being able to make it up a hill being divided in half to continue the trip. Cool. Love this. Love hearing the radio dispatch.😊 Boy that second half was pulling pretty hard. You did good .. 👍😊
Well said! Thanks for your comments
I grew up in Mt.CARMEL, fun to see my old stomping ground, live on Norris Lake Tennessee now.
Wow, what an awesome video! That train was really working hard. Wonder why they didn't add two more units. Maybe that would have helped going over the hill. Awesome all the same. That old signal would be cool if it was still turned on but oh well. Love the mechanical bells at 18:00. Wish all crossings still had them. Oh well. Have a nice day ☺️
Thanks for watch\hing and have a great day also! I love the mechanical bells also
Wonder I it was equiped with automatic salters or sand to try to get traction. Hill starts are horrible sometimes.
I love to hear a train working. Thanks 👍. 😊
More to come!
The two beautiful locomotives #3512 and #1686 give us a noisy horn concert when they arrive on the crossing while a white truck barely crosses it! There are no gates on this crossing.
Wow thats awesome nice video
Thank you so much 😀
@@JawTooth 😃😃
Glad I got to see this one. TY for all the work that goes into making your videos.
Glad you like them!
WOOOO listen to thoes horns on 3512...wow
11:00 - "D'oh!" I bet there were some more "colorful metaphors" in the cab that day.
Nice to see chessie and norfie thumbs up on the train shots
Hi Jawtooth,
You have a beautiful country. Railroads pay themselves.
Beautiful country and love you guys.
Knew that anyway. I learned your dad's and grandparents.
Sorry, I am not a judge in anyway. You are beautiful people. My opinion.
Great catches JT 👍👌
Thank you very much!
Another great video love, Cincinnati RR videos h and the pets
Can you give us a tour of Mt orab sometime
Not much to see but I could do that
They made it!!!! Cool video with a different twist.
That’s my favorite horn
It has been some time since your train dog 🐕 has been riding in your truck. Is Cheesie OK? Great video, Jaw Tooth 😍 👍
Yes, thanks, she is fine. I take her on rides a lot but not as much when I film trains because she gets so excited that it makes it difficult for me to film
@@JawTooth I can imagine 😁
Good story, nicely filmed. Thanks much.
Thank you Brian, nice train. I'm glad you kept norfie, giving her a nice home. I love animals.
Me too!
Wow, look at that beautiful signal in the opening shot.
Thanks, they have some classic railroad stuff still standing
@@JawTooth That seems like a person could restore it. A little sand blasting and paint and re-wire it. But where to put it?
Lokomotif yang sangat besar kawan..
Jika ini beroperasi di Indonesia akan menjadi incaran bagi railfans di sini
That Mt. Orab Porta-Potty probably has a lot of train movement stories to tell. We set our clocks back two weeks ago. I guess that explains the lighting difference. We are on Central Standard Time. Those CCET locomotives sure are looking 'swell'. Golly. Hey! Señor Jaws. Whose fault is the stall? I lost my sunny-side up eggs for breakfast here. Had to flip 'em and go fried. Now that means putting jam on my buttered yoke-dipping toast. Breakfast potato patty is kinda crispy in my deep frier. Needless to say, the bacon is cold. But, you did warn us in the title. It's on me, isn't it? Bad day all around for the CCET, Williamsburg and Puebla, México El RobBreakfast (Desayuno). Anyway, gracias por tu video. RT sends...
Thank you for another excellent video this time covering one of the many operating issues faced by railways. 🙂 Here in the UK somebody would be standing outside a manager's office waiting to be called in to explain why sufficient motive power was not provided! 🤔
It's much appreciated the work you put into these videos. The clarity on this one is stunning. Good catch of the train stalling. These small railways are interesting.
Thank you very much!
Selamat malam, salam dari Indonesia 🙏
Good evening
Fantastic catch. CCET needs bigger locos. Thanks again for sharing
Thanks for watching
Maybe they should've at least kept the old IMRL SD45-2 that used to be on the CCET.
I think that should be a first in the educational system!
The Horn is your message to run away from getting stomped on! 🤧👊❤️🇺🇸
What a classic👍
Best time of the year is right now Hope JAW Tooth and everyone else is ok today
FANTASTIC CATCH! The stall,as it happened, splitting the train in two, delivering both sections to the yard! THIS IS WHY WE ALL WATCH YOUR VIDEO’S. THE BEST ON YOU TUBE!❤❤❤❤
Old telegraph poles with glass insulators and wire still attached, but obviously coming down, how extremely rare is that. Most places those would all be shot up and the copper wire vandalized. That along with the old RR signal is a history lesson in the making. Fine video JT. Much appreciated!
