      Thats if you gel stain clean wood that has never been painted, in this video this cabines were already painted and therefore are sealed already. You just need to be sure they are perfletly clean and no grease , probably light sanding would be better.

    I did not realize that my bathroom cabinets were not real wood, but this method still worked! However the paint brush and roller didn't work the best for us - we ended up using socks and that gave a better texture. Thanks for making this video!

    Kerri Lawless - just some comments from having followed your video and researching a ton of other sites, that would be helpful for people to know. 1. If using a roller and rolling on gel stain, its likely going to be be pretty thick - depending on whats already on your cupboards, if applied too thick - the gel stain may not dry properly, leaving a tacky mess. It would be helpful to note this for people as well as mention, some best practices around how to fix the problem of gel stain applied too thick and how to correct it. I learnt a ton during the course of this project and through the research, and these are all likely points people should know in the forefront. Thanks

    • @KerriLawless
      @KerriLawless  Před 5 lety +3

      Yes it will work. You definitely need to prep them with Krud Kutter. Spray it on, let it sit at least 15 minutes or even a little longer and then rinse them really good. The Krud Kutter. will take the shine down a bit. If they are super glossy it couldn’t hurt to scuff them with sandpaper after cleaning but I’ve never done any heavy sanding and have had great success.

      I’ve recently started cleaning the sirfaces with a product called krud Kutter which I found after this video and it’s very helpful for cleaning thoroughly and dulling the topcoat a bit. All we did in this case was clean them well with a degreaser. You can’t see the grain very well but it’s not as solid as using paint.

    Hello kerri,
    First and foremost thank you for the videos! I am a first time home owner and I have officially been biten by the DIY bug. One of my first (of many) projects that I would like to tackle would be staining my kitchen cabinets! Seeing that I am completely new to staining I was hoping that you could help she'd see light on some of my confusion. 1st question, in this video you had your helpers wiped off/clean the cabinets where other tend to always suggest some type of sanding (is sanding absolutely necessary). 2nd, I do desire to have a dark finish (as in the video above). . . I noticed that you never wiped off any of the gel stain (even though other videos do still wile off the gel stain) 3rd question, do you need to put a top coat after your have reached your desired color/stain? If so what would you recommend (or is that determined by the brand of gel stain used) ?
    Thank you in advance for helping this completely lost no one d DIYer!!
    Regards,
    Centurium

    • @KerriLawless
      @KerriLawless  Před 4 lety +5

      Hi Centurium, you are so welcome...we love to help! We have started recently cleaning with a product called Krud Kutter. I leave it on about 15 - 30 minutes and then rinse it several times. This thoroughly degreases the surface and takes the shine down quite a bit. Sanding to take the shine down a bit more can’t hurt, but this product adheres very well and I haven’t found it necessary.

    • @KerriLawless
      @KerriLawless  Před 4 lety +4

      I don’t wipe the stain back off when I’m going over a previously finished surface because it is not soaking in like it would on a raw wood surface. This is also another reason why it takes longer to dry between coats...it is sitting on top of the existing surface as opposed to soaking in.

    • @KerriLawless
      @KerriLawless  Před 4 lety +6

      Although this product has always been very durable for me, it will definitely give another level of protection if you add a clear coat. My favorite is Benjamin Moore Stays Clear. I would use the “Low Lustre” sheen for this. Make sure to wait a couple of days after applying the final coat of stain before applying the top coat to make sure that it is thoroughly dry.

    • @KerriLawless
      @KerriLawless  Před 4 lety +4

      One of my favorite things about “Stays Clear” is that it is water based but can be applied over the oil based gel stain as long as it is thoroughly dry. It is extremely durable and dries very quickly. Make sure to apply thin coats of the Clear. Multiple thin coats adhere better than one thick coat.

    • @KerriLawless
      @KerriLawless  Před 4 lety +1

      Great question! With a wiping stain you do have to wipe off the excess but with the gel stain and this particular finish, it actually stays on top of the surface instead of soaking in. It takes a couple of days to dry because of that but it is extremely durable! Hope that helps. Thanks so much for watching! 🌸

    This is amazing! This will save me and my husband about $2500. Thanks for posting! Did you add a top/sealing coat to the stain? Also does it take long to dry?

    • @KerriLawless
      @KerriLawless  Před 4 lety +5

      I actually did not add a topcoat to this but you definitely could. It wouldn’t hurt to add that extra layer of protection: however, this particular gel stain is incredibly durable. I would let it dry a couple of days before adding a topcoat and putting a fan on toward the cabinets will help it to dry.
      My favorite topcoat is “Benjamin Moore Stays Clear” It is Acrylic so it can be cleaned up with water, it is non-yellowing and can be applied over an oil based product.
      Hope that helps! 🌸

      I’ve used it without a topcoat many times. This product is extremely durable if left to dry before use. Adding a topcoat would always provide additional protection though.

      Kerri Lawless hii, sorry to bother you, I want to start on my bathroom cabinets and theres a little water damage in some areas should I sand those first and continue with the gel stain, also is there a substitute for the two colors you chose that I could get from walmart or home depot or the like by any chance? I really like the color of the cabinets you guys painted and was hoping I could find some way of getting it!

    • @KerriLawless
      @KerriLawless  Před 4 lety

      Hi there! So sorry...just seeing this. If the water damaged areas are rough, then I would sand it to be smooth first. If it is just discolored, the stain should be dark enough that it shouldn’t be noticeable. If you do sand it though, that area will be more porous, and will accept the stain differently so I would sand the entire cabinet if you do have to sand that spot so that the finish will be even.

    • @KerriLawless
      @KerriLawless  Před 4 lety

      Also, Old Masters isn’t sold at big box stores, but you may be able to find a smaller paint store locally that sells it.

  • @The_believer_
    @The_believer_ Před 4 lety

    Would you recommend sanding on cabinets that have a shiny polish to them, or should this gel stain stick on regardless of sand.

    • @KerriLawless
      @KerriLawless  Před 4 lety

      If it is super shiny, it definitely couldn’t hurt to sand them, but if you take the shine down with Krud Kutter, I don’t feel that it is entirely necessary, especially if you add a durable acrylic topcoat. I think you will be fine either way but if you have a greater comfort level with sanding, then I would just give it a light scuff. Just make sure that you sand with the grain and use a grit that is not very coarse so that you don’t create deep scratches. Good luck with your project! Please let me know how it turns out!🌸

    • @KerriLawless
      @KerriLawless  Před 4 lety +1

      Actually, I would not use this on laminate. It may stick but there’s a really good chance that it won’t and I’ve never tried it to be sure. Chalk paint however will stick it properly prepared. We are about to release a video on chalk painting cabinets so please subscribe if you haven’t already so you won’t miss it.

    What did you do to prep your cabinets for the stain?

    • @KerriLawless
      @KerriLawless  Před 5 lety +2

      Hi there! I cleaned them with Krud Kutter and wipe them down with water. If you leave the Krud Kutter on for a few minutes before you rinse it off, it takes the sheen down a good bit. This product adheres very well and doesn’t require extensive prep

      Kerri Lawless I thought you said this was without sanding?

    • @KerriLawless
      @KerriLawless  Před 5 lety +1

      @@carladenson9258 Oh wow you are right! I did this project months quite a while before we uploaded the video and have done many since then. For this one we didn't sand, I was wrong We do a lot of projects and have done it differently at different times. In all of the different techniques we have tried, we have found that as long as the sheen is not high gloss, this product sticks very well. The sheen on these cabinets was not very glossy which is even better. You should leave the Krud Kutter on for a while before you rinse it off and it will also help with deglossing the surface. This is something we have realized since this video.
