When painting cabinets and furniture w Chalk Paint if u add a lil water to the paint to thin it out a lil and get a clean spray bottle full w water and spray ur brush lightly after each 3-4 stoke it will prevent streaking, n that rough finish!!!! These steps give the most beautiful finish I always do chalk paint this way u will b amazed at the end results
Thanks for the tip
I shall try this technique on my walls and cabinets. Thanks for sharing!
Very helpful Thankypu !
Cool thanks
Thank u for not taking the doors off. lol just what i was looking for 👍🏾👍🏾
I’m glad to see you didn’t take off the hardware like everyone else, because I dread unscrewing and replacing all the hardware with a drill !!! Good job ladies 💪🏻
They literally took off the hardware!!
I’ve painted lots of cabinets with a chalk paint that I make myself. Super fast and so satisfying!! I’ve not used the wax that you have but, will try it. I did my own about 5 years ago, and they still look great! I found that brown paper ( construction or grocery bags ) work well for knocking the chalkiness down, to leave a smooth finish, without sanding!
How do you make your chalk paint?
did you seal with anything? I am thinking about painting my kitchen cabinets
Please answer these questions. Thank you. We need to know!
@@pmatthews4391 I can't speak for Sarah, but I've made my own just by adding plaster of paris to paint. Worked well. As for the sealing, you can use floor wax (cheaper than the chalk paint brand wax) but I can't say how durable it would be. I usually opt for poyureathane.
Do you sand after the last coat or after the first coat?
I like the step by step they show, even the tape pieces behind the middle cabinet, awesome I wouldn’t of thought of that .
Great transformation. I have those same color cabinets. Hope to get the enthusiasm to paint mine.
♥️ 🙏 Thank you sooooooooo much for doing this video and sharing it with us!!!!!!
I love that you show the mistakes, changes, fixes & thought process so that we can learn from that!
I feel like I CAN do this myself so thank you!!!!!!
Good job but I probably would take out the cabinet doors and paint it separately!
I would put a clear water based verathane on this for scrubability in a kitchen..but it looks great!
Looks fabulous! Great job!
Wow looks beautiful!! I just subscribed to ur channel!! I'm hooked already lol
To avoid sanding use thinner coats and spritz with water to smooth while painting. Works like a charm
Wow great way to update without spending a lot of money
Love this! Thanks for sharing ladies!
Looks great! We’re thinking of doing our own cabinets but last time we did it we used the Home Depot rusteleom kit and the sealer turned it a bit yellow. We got new cabinets but they’re not real wood they are laminate, chalk paint should b fine to work on these?
Gotta make sure the sealers as water based other wise they dry with a honey amber finish
I am moving into apartment soon and I plan on painting the dark wood cupboards. So this is what I will do. Thank you ladies
After adding the top coat/ clear coat did it look similar to a semi gloss finish?
How many cans/ounces did you end up using for the final look? Thank you for your video!
Yes I would like to know as well. I have about the same size kitchen.
I'd like to paint over my white chalk painted cabinets with a darker brown. They are pretty dirty. Can I use the krud kutter on my chalk painted cabinets before repainting? Do you have any suggestions for painting over the white with a dark color? Thank you!
Wear a mask when you do the sanding.
It looks really nice. But what happened with the no sanding??
You ladies are amazing! I'm dumbfounded at your creativity. Awesome job!
Looks great! Is it still looking good and how much did it cost for paint?
What brand of chalk paint and poly do you use? I read someone used a roller and paper bags to smooth the paint instead of sanding? Your thoughts?
Never saw anyone paint with such nice clothes on 🎉❤ me with my torn stained tshirt for every paint project hehe😅
drop cloths to protect counters? 220 light sanding between coats, also put a little amount of the paint in with the matt vanish if putting top protective coat on instead of wax.
Very nice.
Thank you Veronica! 🌸
Hello I have a question
For kitchen cabinets is necessary apply wax?
This gave me the inspiration to do my kitchen
Does it really last along time if you don't sand??
Beautiful 🥰🥰🥰
Did you paint over the hinges??? How does that hold?
What a beautiful transformation! I always use latex paint for all my wood painting projects.. you inspire me to use chalkboard paint! Another awesome informative video 😊
Thank you so much Tina! I for sure want to know what you think after you try it! 🌸
Thank you so much Tina! I for sure want to know what you think after you try it! 🌸
Hello. It isn’t chalkboard paint, it’s chalk paint. Chalkboard paint turns the painted surface into a chalkboard. Chalk paint has a chalky consistency.
So you pop off the front panels, but don’t remove cabinet doors? Why? That makes no sense.
Because you can open the doors of the other cabinets, pull the drawers open etc. to get all the nooks & crannies .. but since those ones are locked in you can’t properly paint the inner edges as well
I used TSP to knock down my shine/coating on my cabinets, brushed a thin coat of Sherwin Williams cabinet primer. Rolled (smaller rollers and a beautiful finish no brush strokes left behind) two coats of Sherwin Williams (1 gallon) of Cabinet latex satin paint (holds up better then craft paint in a kitchen) NO SANDING AT ALL... no surprises or slow downs got the job done. Did my kitchen alone. I never could have brush painted that would have taken me forever and my hands would have been aching. Rolling was so easy and a thicker coat will be more durable in a kitchen. Looks beautiful ladies. Just curious of the cost of 4 coats of craft paint, wax sealing? Ugh must have cost a fortune... I missed if you shared the total cost for your kitchen?
Hey there! Thanks so much! Actually, the chalk paint goes really far. I didn’t ever add it all up but going from memory I’m pretty sure it was under $75 altogether. The large bottles of chalk paint are 9.99 each and if you get them from Joanne fabrics you can even use a coupon sometimes. The wax is somewhere around $20 from Lowe’s and I think we only used one of them. Hope that helps! Congratulations on such a successful project! You rock!
@@KerriLawless thanks for the info... I have not gotten into the chalk paint bet... but I am always doing fun projects...I didn't do the inside either... that's just crazy, no see that anyway.... thanks for the Judo's
You’re welcome! 🌸
Did you make a video perhaps? Would like to have seen it.
Few questions: Can i use a primer under the chalk paint? Also would floor laquer work better and be more duarble than wax? Ive heard with wax you have to reapply yearly... how does this compare with the enamel sherwin williams paint that is used on moldings etc?
Lauren Mosley i would of used Spray Laquer in Matt Clear. You can do primer but shouldn’t need it with Chalk Pain, i did 2 coats on my units and sprayed with MATT and 1 year on is still looking good.
Chalk paint doesn't need primer.
How much paint did you use?
What is the clean up on cabinetry like this long term?
depending on the top coat that you put on. but they dont peel like latex paint.
How are these cabinets now? Does the wax come in a certain finish? Would you apply Polycrylic the same way?
If you use poly make sure its water based or it'll dry with an amber (yellow-ish) tint
That was an ugly looking cabinet, looking lovely in white. You can put stick on mirror tiles right above the sink, and get a new sink tray with new tap, ta ta brand new kitchen! It’s already looking soo fresh! G Job ♥️♥️👍👍
I painted cabinets last 25 year professionally, if I ever paint any cabinet like this I will get call back every day ,you don't sand before but you sand after you put paint, that white tape you put on the wall most likely will take of the wall paint off ,when you sand the paint with machine most likely that you will take a lot of paint you can't get away with touch up ,who is gonna clean the hinges....... I can keep going like this ,I'm 90 percent sure that house owner will call professional soon
Wandering why you didn't use a roller to paint the cupboards
What color are the kitchen walls? Great transformation! I want to duplicate!!
She mentioned that they used Sherwin Williams “agreeable gray”. I also have this color in my home, and love it!
Kind of green.
Thinking about agreeable gray on the walls. What white for kitchen cabinets would work with agreeable gray? Thank you!
Doesnt your hair fall out onto the painted surface?
Nope! Just paint brush hairs.😂
Eliminate brush strokes by using a foam roller
What is the difference between using the sealing wax and a polyurethane?
Polyurethane can leave a yellow tint on white paint. Clear wax doesn't affect the colour of the paint.
You can use poly if its water based. Looks milky white. Other wise yes others will dry an amber (yellow-ish) color
@@mrmrsrocha3389 thanks
I want to do this, but I'm scared of the "yellowing" I've heard about. Will the sealant prevent this? What do I use to clean the cabinets after I've painted them?
Hi Vanessa! Can you tell me a little more specifics about the products that people have told you will yellow? Was it chalk paint?
I’m guessing that people may have been talking about oil based clear products or oil based paints in general. Any oil based products have a tendency to yellow over time. Do you think this may have been what they were talking about?
It was chalk paint but it was the wax on top that caused it.
Ok. If you use an acrylic topcoat, you should not have any yellowing. I’m guessing the one you’re referring to was a real wax. The brand we used in the video is acrylic and should not yellow. You can also use Minwax Polycrylic which is not a wax at all, but a clear acrylic topcoat or my favorite, Benjamin Moore Stays Clear. It’s a bit more expensive and a bit harder to find, but extremely durable and easy to work with. Any of those options would work. Hope that helps! Let me know if you have any other questions. 🌸
Thank you Kerri! Yes, this helps alot. I picked dark mocha for my cabinets in my house that's being built and it's too late to freaking change it. No clue what I was thinking. I found a hazelnut color chalk paint that I want to use. It will go better with the black appliances and my dinning room set. I think with what you've told me I can do it and it will come out beautiful. I don't want to remove the doors either. What do you think?
Were the cabinets grain free or with grain?
That's my question. The grain has to show thru and ruin the aesthetic I would think. If I did this to my golden oak cabinets I think it'd look crappy.
How long did this job take you ladies?
It tells you in the video. One day.
Curious how long does it last in durability? Has anyone tried this if so how long has it been for you?
I used my own homemade chalk paint 7 years ago and they still look beautiful. I did not seal them and they clean up easily and are still very white. I took all the doors and hardware off and painted separately and also used a primer before the chalk paint because I went from very dark wood to white. Hope this helps!
@@sandrahammond2069 thank you! I started my cabinets and put primer and a cabinet/furniture paint but it's been chipping and coming off so fast and easy. I don't know what I should do to fix it.
I’m confused as to why so many use chalk paint to paint cabinets? Is it because you don’t have to sand or prime? Because it dries fast? Thanks for an explanation.
Yes and yes. And people forget you have to coat it with a clear coat when your done. You can use a poly but make sure its water based otherwise it'll dry with and Amber (yellowish) tint.
Love this transformation, how many bottles of chalk paint did you end up using for this kitchen?
Hi Jada, I think we used 4 or 5 of the 16 oz bottles for this kitchen. It was a few months ago, so I don't remember exactly. Thanks so much for watching!
I have noticed you using that wax on many projects. I don’t understand how it protects the paint and or the wood say on a kitchen table. Does it dry hard? And do you need to apply it every so often again to protect the wood? I’d appreciate a response because I just got a solid oak table and chairs for free that has only one pedestal with beautiful carved claw feet. I wanted to chalk paint the pedestal and antique just that part of the table. For the top, I want to keep the oak color but I can’t sand due to disability therefore I want to clean it really good first but don’t know how to protect the top from wear and tear. I was considering a wax such as you’ve used on these cabinets but am unsure if, for a table that will have grandchildren around it, if that kind of wax has to be reapplied every so often. Would really appreciate a response Kerri! Thanks! 😊
It does harden but it also can be removed with heat. Meaning a hot rag or coffee cup. I'll wax furniture sides. Never a tabletop and I personally wouldn't wax my cabinets. If you do you'll have to keep rewaxing if you clean them often. Wax is easy to use and really holds up well on the right surface.
Ive tried the wax. Def not for high traffic use. Use a clear poly coat and make sure its water based to avoid that yellowish amber tint
Agreeable grey is pretty! Who makes it?
Sherwin Williams SW 7029

I did a grey kitchen, and it’s look fantastic. I did not take cabinets of , I have to many of them .
Thanks Queens
Love it, but one question how often did you sand? Was it between each coat or only after initial coat? Thanks.
Great question! We only sanded after the last coat of paint. Just make sure you don’t wait longer than one day to do it. Chalk paint hardens and becomes more difficult to sand as time goes on. I would literally wait until it dries, usually 15 to 30 minutes, and then sand with a fine grit sandpaper so that you don’t create deep scratches in the paint. Hope this helps, please let me know how your project turns out!🌸

@@KerriLawless do you paint another coat after sanding?
How are these holding up?
They were selling the house so they probably don't know
Can you use the chalk paint over a painted cabinet?
As far as the types of paint that I’m used to, it should be fine. The only situation I can think of where it wouldn’t be is if there was a real wax applied over the paint that would keep it from sticking. If it’s just a regular paint it should be OK thanks for watching!🌸
@@KerriLawless thank you.
How much chalk paint and wax did you need for all the cabinets?
Seal it with Polycrylic, it's quicker and I'll say nicer finish.
Are you painting over front hinges??? Doesn’t that look super tacky?
I have the same hinges, they are not visible in the front or side
So the description says no sanding but in the end you end up sanding them all
KMF she means sanding down the cabinets before applying the chalk paint. She only sands it down later to make it more smooth in the end.
that hardware should have been changed. otherwise looks great
You need to buff that wax when it’s dry-24 hours. That last end shot looked awful and patchy because you did not apply and buff the wax properly. 2-3 coats is necessary for a kitchen because of spills and condensation etc.
Annie Sloan has a short video explaining how to wax an also how to feather the paint so u don’t have to sand it down.
Duck tape didn’t pull paint off?? 😮
Why not take off the hardware and wax in the kitchen? No
doesnt the paint scratch off over time with no sanding first ? thanks connie
"OVER 70 STILL GLAMOROUS " :)
did the doors stick to the frames ?
Hi Connie! Great questions!!! I had all the same questions when I started using chalk paint. Actually, I find the chalk paint sticks much better than any other type of paint I've ever used, even without sanding. Its amazing!!!
And the doors did not stick to the frame because the chalk paint is not sticky at all. It is the latex and acrylic in traditional paint that will make it stick, and there is none of that in the brand of chalk paint that I used in this video.
Thanks for your questions and thanks so much for watching!
Don't ruin them 😵💫
This video is kind of proof that just because you have a CZcams channel, doesn’t mean you’re a professional.
You should wear appropiate clothing and tie your hair at least.
