FISHING in BIG STORM for BROWN Trout [New Zealand Fly Fishing]

  • When it rains in New Zealand, it can REALLY rain! And when that happens, if you time it right you can find some really good opportunities as an angler.
    I head out with my buddy Dean on a rubbish forecast with the hope of finding a rising river and and some hungry brown trout making the most of it.
    Always a good time messing around in the elements!

    Hi Alex, that was a suuper great one, the male that you caught at the end of the video. I bet you forgot all of your wet arms when you had that fish on the hook. Pitty that Dean did lose the last one he had on. As always it was a great video. Thank you for going through all that effort with editing and preparing, to please us. It is a pleasure to watch your films. Keep on dude...

    I do a lot of river fishing for smallmouth, and I rarely am able to get a visual on a fish. I read the water and imagine places that a fish would sit and feed, then make the best cast and presentation that I can. Different angles of attack, but successful, nonetheless. The few times I've been able to spot a smallie and get it to bite have been some of the more memorable fish that I've caught. I love seeing that dark shadow beelining straight for my lure!

    I will strongly recommend the Delta Wading Jacket from Sitka. The gasket cuffs keep your sleeves dry, and well fitting hood with separate collar will keep the water out of your neck and shoulders area. Cheers!

    Another great production. Reminds me a little of Winter Steelhead fishing in the PNW. I read they had massive flooding in the Canterbury Region last year...8 months ago. I wonder, with floods like those is there an impact on the fishery? I fished that area pretty hard in 19 and really liked it. There must have been trout in the roads and fields.

    • @mikeabel1660
      @mikeabel1660 Před 2 lety

      Yep, there were trout in fields etc. Some of the rivers were fairly badly damaged and will take a year or two to recover, but overall it hasn't been too bad. Still plenty of good quality fish around in the areas that were hit hard.

    • @big1dog23
      @big1dog23 Před 2 lety

      @@mikeabel1660 Thanks, Mike. Sounds like winter flooding is pretty normal, but that was a big one. At the Trout Center on the North Isle they explain why the famous Blue Pool isn't there any more. Fascinating stuff. Keeps the fish moving around, for sure.

    Seemed like a nasty day weather-wise. But you guys did pretty well still. One of the best fishing day of my career was on a similar day. It started with wind driven rain and plummeting temps. Though I had a rain jacket on, I was soaked down to my toes wearing waders. Then came the hail. We want back to the cabin, changed into dry Winter gear and went out again. All the anglers left due to the conditions. My friend and I had the river all to ourselves and had an incredible afternoon fishing. Most of the time both of us had a fish on. This was in the middle of our Summer in July, but the hills and mountains next to us were covered in snow. The next day was a typical warm Summer day in Montana.

      Anything not majorly ‘peaty’.
      My go to is prob a Glenfiddich 12 ur old, 15 ur old if I’m feeling rich or wanna treat myself
      ‘Writers Tears’ is one I recently found and that’s really good as well
      Glenlivett is a good one,
      Any Japanese one I have tried so far, I enjoyed too
