you should buy new devices if you feel like you've been putting up with your old devices for too long, and that you want a new device, not because you want to improve at osu. And you need to know that using a new device will instantly lower your osu level and you have to work your way back up, but it will be worth it as it eliminates what irritated you. For example I've been really annoyed with my wired mouse for a long time cuz the wire make the mouse feel different every time, so I buy a wireless mouse, and while I did not instantly improve, it eliminates that feeling of the wire pushing into your hand.

I think you should have mentioned how valuable Vaxei, Whitecat, and Idke's mental attitude towards improvement can be. I remember Idke saying on stream that one of the reasons he was so consistent is that he kept pushing his limits and believing he can get a score he was working towards if the right time and practice was put in. It sounds pretty basic but considering how many osu players always tell themselves that they won't get better, they won't get this score, or that they're bad, is so common it doesn't seem to be I guess. Keeping a good mental is hard and tedious but it's probably the best advice when talking about trying to improve.

  • @Psychopathicviewer
    @Psychopathicviewer Před 4 lety +37

I have some criticisms with your "genetic" arguments.
Your reaction time chart. There are, from my understanding three different kinds of reaction time. 1. Visual/auditory reaction time 2. Simple reaction time and 3. Choice reaction time.
Visual/auditory reaction time is straight forward, it's simply the amount of time it takes for our brain to react to comprehend a visual/auditory stimulus. Neither are very long, but visual was twice as long as auditory iirc.
The second is what the chart you used was for, SRT (simple reaction time). This is the amount of time it takes for you to react to a stimulus, BUT this is data relating to only one possible stimuli and one possible response. Take for example, hearing a auditory cue and immediately responding pressing a single button. You're already prepared to press the button since there are no other options, this movement requires very little mental processing and therefore is a very fast reaction.
What osu! reaction time is closer to : CRT (choice reaction time). CRT is the amount of time needed to give a response to two or more possible stimuli requiring two or more possible responses. When given options or are required to do more than one response the mean for our reaction time is actually close to double of what our SRT time would be, so depending on the task the mean reaction time can be between 300-500 ms.
Since we aren't just reacting visually but through auditory cues with the music (although it's more visually) and we aren't just doing a single movement, we don't move our pens/mouse in the same way every single time and we don't use the same finger to tap every time ect. ect. our osu! reaction time is closer to CRT than it is SRT.
So, what does this mean? The actual difference between all of these different types of reaction times is our mental processing time and the SRT chart is not a universal mean that's true for every activity. The more complicated the task the more time it'll take to go from reaction from a stimulus to a response. To use SRT as an argument is faulty, especially without understanding what the chart actually means.
And what determines our mental processing speed? It's a cognitive trait and considering many of our cognitive abilities are linked to genetics it's debatable that this is as well.
Am I saying that it can't be improved on? Of course not. Just using a reaction time chart you didn't understand yourself is flawed reasoning and doesn't prove that we're all equal because our reaction time cap is "below AR 11", because it's actually far from it.
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Secondly, streaming/aiming
Your initial statement makes no sense. You're claiming with "bad genetics" are capable of hitting 250 BPM bursts? That's really not true. Speaking more from my own experiences with players here, those with actual "bad streaming genetics" *struggle* to even hit 160-180 BPM bursts.
But take for example when there are players who are capable of tapping 220 BPM long streams in literally their first week into osu! and you get players who have been playing for 3-5 years and still struggle with 170 BPM bursts and deal with their fingers completely locking up or are lacking strength to do even the most basic shit, then you obviously end up with claims that it's genetic whether it's right or wrong.
Your understanding of streaming stamina is a bit strange too. I'm not sure I even understand it...if you can hit a certain burst it definitely does not mean you should be able to stream that BPM if you "optimize (?)" it
With aiming, I don't have much to comment on. It's been common knowledge in the community for a long time that the majority of aiming is actually mental. But I will say that saying "if you can quickly move your cursor up and down then there is no cap" is way too oversimplifying. Moving your cursor in rapid succession from point A to B is what's called "short term muscle memory" which is movement that is a lot easier for us to follow through with. But to have the mental capacity to move not only quickly, but accurately and steadily is a whole other ballpark.
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Genetics is the ultimate cop-out excuse for osu! players, understandably that makes a lot of people sick of hearing of it. Unless we had a machine that could let us switch bodies there's no way to prove that it is or isn't a physically genetic or mental factor
. The overuse of it as an excuse by players who don't want to put the actual time in has made it almost absolute, but then simply waving it off as an actual factor because of that is nonsense.

Stamina is simply finding the best way to click at the speed you can, while also improving your resistance towards microscopic tear in the muscle (ie: stronger muscles)
Finding the correct way to click is vastly the most important thing, however. Because when things are working in tandem, the singular strain is greatly reduced.
Also, bodyfat percentage would also play a role in how much strain you get from clicking
so an optimal person for clicking would probably have; hypermobility, a strong forearm/palm, proper form, good rest, healthy amounts of water, sufficient vitamins on all ends, and under 15% bodyfat.
I've not seen any studies regarding the length/width of fingers, however.
A larger forearm and palm would probably help. Greater potential for muscle.

You make good points here. I'm recently learning how to alternate without confusing myself, and I have only started learning like a few days ago and I'm already seeing improvements. Awkward maps don't seem as awkward anymore. Maps that were doable but a little hard suddenly felt slow and easy. Looking forward to improving more in the future!
But the most important thing about improving in osu would be to enjoy the game. It's much easier to give up if you don't enjoy the game. But if you do enjoy the game, you'll always end up coming back to it.
Also also, to other players out there, make sure you put health at number one. Take breaks, don't overexert your hands. If your hands are starting to hurt or feel numb, stop playing. Stretch often. Don't injure yourself ot the point of no return. Hospital bills are expensive :P

I put all my stupid/difficult maps into my warm-up playlist. I play them once when I start the game to get the negative mood out of the way knowing that I'll fail it out anyway. Then one day I'll pass the map with a C or B and be pretty happy about that. I'll keep it at with keeping those dumb maps in the warm-up playlist until they're A-ranked, then boot them out for another dumb hard map.
Outside of the warm-up, I'm constantly getting new maps just to play something I haven't seen. I aim to improve my sightread more than anything. After I play a map outside of my warm-up a few times, it's easy to just go in and full combo it. Initially, that warm-up folder started when I was entering 3-star land.
It has been a week and now I have 4.7 star clears with 1 miss because I'm not beating myself up with the failures.
As for the Real audio trick, just push the 10ms into the osu settings and let it handle itself there. No sense in using 3rd party tools when it is built into the game.
Also, I'm 26. No special genetics. No special equipment.

Biggest problem for me in improving on osu, is that I love the game, love playing it, but I play for like 2 weeks and then something comes up and I can't play for a little while, so I get out of the loop I was in and it's hard to *start* again. So I end up having these random bursts of playing where I improve just to the point where I'm beating my old scores and then shut down again.

First off let me say I don't know a whole lot of terms and whatnot for osu while I try and explain some trouble I'm running into while trying to improve. I'm currently trying to get better at streams of 180-200 bpm. I was able to finally pass the big black after maybe an hour of warming up to how fast those streams go (the jumps never seemed to be an issue for me luckily), but now I'm running into an issue with anima by xi (aswell as aiae), sure the streams have a bit more movement in them than the big black but there's some issues that rise up. I can't seem to tap quickly enough unless I warm up to that speed for about an hour, and I usually double tap normally for everything in my playstyle which has led me to this interesting tactic I've figured out. I seem to always lead a stream with the same finger (the "z" key / my middle finger), and focusing on that whenever starting a stream has helped alot. But now the issue is trying to hold my mouse hand still while tapping that fast during a stream, which I guess will hopefully come with practice and getting more comfortable with 180-200 bpm streams. We'll see.

I feel ike learning osu is easier compared to learning competitive fps. Like in osu! it's hard to do bad practice. If you're playing a little out of your comfot zone or right at the cap of it you'll still improve and have fun at the same time. But in counter strike or valorant or similar games you have to practice on your own against bots to improve your aim or other mechanical skill which is really boring.

I feel like I am in a bit of a beginner improvement spike and man does it feel good. I usually play songs that I like and raising difficulty a little bit beyond my comfort zone. However, I think I am lacking one of the more critical skills which is holding good acc in full combos. I haven't fced a single map yet, but feel it isn't necessary to do so cause I know I am comfortable with that difficulty already so it would be kinda tedious and boring for me to grind out fcs on maps that I consider easy, but I do think it is worth improving my tap timing, holding slider breaks, and aiming while nervous (maintaining that grip) to get better acc.

I got hooked on osu! at the end of may this year. I had downloaded it to try it out and had about 700 play count in standard over the span of two years (june 2019-april 2022). It's now the middle of August (about 3 months of playing almost everyday) and I almost have 10k play count. My friend that had originally convinced me to download it and that I play the game with is blown away at how fast I've been improving over the past few months, and tbh, that's part of why I love the game so much right now.
I was 1.1m global when I started playing again, and I set a goal to get into 6 digit. Two days later, my goal was 800k global. Fast forward 20 days and I achieved my then goal of getting below 500k. Then my goal was a 100pp play. I got that the same day. After that my goal was to just generally improve and get an an fc with good acc on a 5star map, which took about 22 days of playing. Then my goal was a 150pp play as well as getting into 4 digit in Canada, with a long term goal of getting to 5 digit global. Around the same time I started to actually download maps with streams and have been working on getting better at those since then cause I'm not great at them and want to be better at them.
My first 150pp play was 18 days ago now, and I reached 4 digit in Canada roughly a week or so ago. Since getting the 150pp play my goal was to get more consistent at 5 star maps and to really focus on getting better acc on scores. A few days of getting far better at accuracy, my goal was to actually beat my first 150pp (157pp) play. 11 days after the 157 I finally beat it with a 162pp play, then later that night my friend sent me a really short 1-2 map that I fc'd after about 10 or so tries for 179pp. Since then my main goal has been a 200pp play.
Tonight I got a 198pp play and I'm ecstatic. The play was originally a 4 miss with 95% acc, which I score v1'd myself twice getting a 1 miss with 94% lowering it from 155pp to 150pp, then the next play was a 2 miss with even worse acc lowering it to 134pp. I lost 1.1k global rank in total for those xD. Then after maybe 30 minutes of grinding the top diff in the same set, I went back to it and got the fc after about 5 tries with 97.8% acc.
I think a big reason I've been able to improve so quickly is because I set realistic short term goals for myself, with long term goals in mind. I also played the game for an average of about 7 hours a day during June and the first half of July as I had taken time off work and kind of lost myself in the game. I'm by no means someone who can give every osu! player tips on improving because my journey with the game has basically only just started. But to those that I can give pointers to, be patient and set realistic goals for yourself.
ps. This isn't supposed to be a flex or anything, more so a response to the last bit of the video because in my opinion, practicing and seeing the results from practicing is the best part of the game for me. Seeing my motivation and effort to become better actually paying off is extraordinarily rewarding for me, making practice really fun.
Thank you for coming to my ted talk.

Not to long ago I started improving a lot in Osu and it was only because I work on my accuracy, went from 89% to 99% overall and because of that I was raking fast but then I started to play worse with some minor improvements but still worse, I was able to hit the majority of the jumps and some streams but I miss a lot of randoms notes and for streams I was doing kinda ok but not as well and accurate as before. Because of that I got stuck in the same rank for almost 3 days, before this I was ranking between 1k and 2k everyday, but then I noticed that my left hand had almost no grip, even grabbing a pillow felt awkward, so I took the advise to take 2 or 3 days off so that my left hand recovers from RSI (Repetitive Strain Injury)

After a while when you get comfortable playing difficult songs start playing what you used to farm or harder and everything seems so much easier
