  • When it comes to winning, AFC Richmond are relative strangers, but the series is no stranger when it comes to winning big with them taking home multiple Emmys as well as being one of the most popular comedy series around, and currently that big time fruit company’s flagship series. Like the titular hero, the show has been a surprising hit, charming, loveable and deeper than you originally thought. Not only does it do a great job at capturing football culture and respecting the sport, but it also dives into more difficult and sensitive topics, all while being genuinely hilarious with some of the best, colorful characters on TV (he’s here, he’s there, he’s every blanking where, Roy Kent!).
That’s why we thought we’d take another look at the show at all the things you may not have noticed the first time around. This will include easter eggs, hidden references, pop culture nods, behind the scenes secrets and general facts all of which went into making the show such a success story. We will talk about all of the sneaky references to real life people, all of the hidden movie references or subtle verbal nods, cast members who auditioned for other roles, others who sent embarrassing tapes to get the role, real life inspirations behind AFC Richmond and their players, injuries that happened on set, and how the show got made in the first place. Diamond Dogs on 3 - 1, 2 3 - DIAMOND DOGS!

I believe that the wonderful challenge to Rupert by Ted to a high stakes game of darts also includes a "Princess Bride" reference. Ted "remembers" that he's not right handed and then proceeds to win... while misquoting Whitman "be curious, not judgmental." In the great "Princess Bride" sword scene, both Inigo and Westley begin by fighting with their non-dominant hand.

One more thing……when Coach Beard is leaving for his night on the town, Ted tells him “ Bird by Bird, Coach, Bird by Bird.” It is a reference to the book
Bird by Bird, written by Anne Lamont. When she and her brother were kids, her brother has a school assignment to write a paper on different kinds of birds.
Having waited until the last minute to do his assignment, he was sitting at the kitchen table with books about different kinds of birds and was very anxious. Their father walked by the table and said, “Bird by Bird, son, Bird by Bird.”

I do wonder what it would be like watching this as an American having not grown up with this sport ingrained in our culture. As I feel it is these references and almost parodies which really make the program/show.
Straight away afrer just a few scenes of Roy Kent I remember saying to my friend: "Oh! It is Roy Keane!!" Who is still always on our screens as a football pundit... not quite the same in that way then though.
I always thought AFC Richmond was clever with its South London references: Richmond is an area of South London without a football team, the kit and stadium is clearly neighbouring Crystal Palace and the "AFC" bit has been taken from neighbouring AFC Wimbledon.
Oh and I love the 'Soccer Saturday' bits. As soon as I saw Jeff, I remember saying: "Oh Jeff! Where's Kammy?... oh there he is" although Kammy (full name Chris Kamara) is never in the studio though. Love Kammy!

It’s still great from an American perspective. I come from a place where our professional team (American rules football) has sold out every home game since the 50’s. My children played soccer and we watch the Premier League and fascinated by how tight the community seems to be around the UK.

Late to the party, only just started watching the show. Good collection of easter eggs both in the video as well as the comments.
I didn't see this reference mentioned: When the club arrives at Wembley and Ted tries to reassure the team it's the same size as the pitch back home (incorrectly, he learns) and then Jamie yells "Richmond", it's an homage to the scene in "Hoosiers" where Gene Hackman's basketball team from the small town of Hickory arrives at a huge fieldhouse for the state championship... and before leaving the court, one of the players yells "Hickory!"

Regarding the references to musical theatre, although Waddingham is indeed a West End favorite, I heard that all - or most - of the writers are musical theatre fans and that this is the reason for the references.

There was a lot more references to RomComs...Roy Kent running to get back to the stadium is the end of When Harry Met Sally, The 'as you wish' of course from The Princess Bride, etc.
The thing I noticed was when Roy's niece was describing him, one of the things she mentioned was that he has a scratchy beard. When she says it it touches his beard...like he never realized it before. And later he grows his beard out...seemingly in response to his niece's mentioning it, which was very considerate of him (and a nice window into the kind of person the character is under his rough exterior.
