Thanks Kip! This trick works like a charm! No more smoke in the house on light up during cold weather. Thanks!

This was a great help! My stove doesn't have a baffle like in the video, so I stuck a fire starter chunk on the end of a sharp iron tool, held it up into the chimney. It took just maybe two minutes, and the fire started beautifully . I burned only a portion of the starter, so I blew it out and can use it again. Thank you for this tip!!

Thanks for this explanation. I thought I was going to go nuts trying to figure this out.

Helpful! Never thought of this. I was considering buying a heatlamp bulb and putting in a construction lamp inside the stove for a while. Funny no one makes something for this.

@@si018 I know, they are costly. Also I don't think I'm handy enough to open the pipe to place it.

Very important for wood burning stoves while camping too! If you're somewhere cold and you're lighting your wood burning stove up in the middle of the night because you're cold, absolutely use a small fire starter for a few minutes first to warm up the pipe, otherwise you're fill your tent with smoke like I did the first time 😅

can you explain what you meant by 'shutting down the fire to get a long burn'? thank you by the way, I went to Ace and bought these squares, they did work, but I still seem to get a lot of smoke coming into my house when I do open the fireplace - it was just cleaned, and I'm wondering if the tech had somehow blocked the baffle with the bricks at the top...guess I need to get a flashlight and get dirty...

My wood stove has a vermiculite baffle. Is it ok to put one of these on top?

So those things don’t put out a lot of smoke until the draft starts?

What about little to no draft when the fire has been going for hours and hours? Open the door to put wood in or check the fire and smoke always comes out a lot. Flue is clean pipe is clean... These designs for the smoke to go up the back of the stove then over the top of a metal wall then down into the pipe and then back up the pipe really don't draft well on their own. What's the fix?? Longer and higher piping on the roof or some type of blower added to the pipe??

Long and taller flue is one thing you can do. The other is to open the draft fully and slowly open the door to reload. It should work most of the time. Also, if it is above 50° or so, the draft will be minimal.

Clogged chimney cap is one possibility in addition to the suggestions in the other comment here. Make sure the chimney is at least two or three feet taller than the highest point on the roof. Open the flue, turn the thermostat to maximum and unlatch but don't open the door until what's left of the fire is burning good (or coals are red hot). Then open the door.
