- With summer weather in full swing, we're heading out to meet up with a group of friends near Bowman Lake in Tahoe National Forest. This area has a ton to offer; with multiple lakes, streams, and swimming holes, there's truly something here for everyone to enjoy. The trail out to the lakes isn't technical or challenging, but it sure is a bone rattler!

Cool video man. Great filming, I know how much effort it takes to get those shots. Thanks for sharing
Thanks so much Dylan. I’m glad you get it! 🤙
Good trick I learned... throw a damp towel under your cutting board and it won’t slide around. That breakfast looks tasty! Cool video.
Dang now that's a tip I needed in my life 😂 thanks man!
Picked that trick up back in culinary school but I dropped out because you can’t trust a skinny chef. LOL 😂
Hahaha ain't that the truth!
Awesome videos Ben! Appreciate the hard work/time you put in to them!
Thank you! I really appreciate it!
Nice video dude
Thanks man! I appreciate you watching 🤙
Looks like you all had a great time! Awesome video, as usual!
Yes! Thank you! Now to start planning the next one!
Excellent Vid! Added to my todo list!
Very relaxing and some bad ass views both in air and ground 🤙🏼 can’t wait for next vid Ben cool out
I appreciate it man! Thanks for checking it out!
Finally had time to watch your video...thank you 👍
Thanks for watching! I appreciate it!
Rc crawlers, bowman and TRD?! Yes! So much win. Great vid i cant wait to get back up there
Appreciate it man! The real recipe for a good time! Haha
This was a really nice video. Thank you
keep the vids coming!!!!
Thanks for watching Tucker! We just made it back from a bigger trip over the holiday weekend, I'm looking forward to getting that footage edited and sharing it with you all!
Hi Ben, a new and enthusiastic subscriber here. Really enjoyed watching this and want to say thanks for your great work.
Wow, I really appreciate it, David! Glad to have you here!
Enjoyed your video and pleasant demeanor.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching J!
Found your Channel kind of by accident to be honest. The only overlanding channel I've ever really watched is Primal Outdoors. The idea is very interesting to me. I love hiking, camping, fishing, etc. The video that I found was your beginner guide to overlanding. It was such a great video and I loved the honesty. Many times you'll see a video like that and they are promoting products or telling you what brand you need for a product or whatever. Your video was just very clean and informative. Loved it. So I took a chance and watched this video and have to say I subscribed immediately and can tell I will enjoy watching all your other videos. Great content and can't wait to see what you do next.
Wow thank you so much Matt! I'm just trying to keep it real and make the videos that I wished I could find when I was first starting out! I appreciate you watching!
So funny. As I'm watching this six people disliked the video. I feel sorry for them. Just followed Ben a couple of days ago and this guy is great.
Appreciate all the support! At this point I've just begun accepting that there's no way to please everyone, someone will find a reason to leave an angry comment or thumbs down 😂
Papas con chorizo! You know what's up Ben! I'm hoping to make a camp video this weekend in New Mexico. Inspiration man! Cheers
Haha you know it 🙌 dude I can't wait to see what you've got going on in New Mexico!
I know you don’t have a whole lot of subscribers right now but please keep making videos! More will come and this channel is so fucking chill👌🙏🙏👌. Happy adventures my dude!
Thanks for the post about to head there this month. Trying to get a idea of what it's like
Hope you have a great trip!
Nice video I see you started from Frisco I’m going to look up this spot looks nice wouldn’t t mind camping out there my self 😎
Hard to beat a quick lake getaway! Can you even beat a spot like this for summer camping?
Man, that looked hella fun up there. When's the next time your headin up there... need to test out my 1ST GEN TUNDRA. PLUS, I'm dying to get up in the woods after 2 decades of NOT CAMPIN. KIDS YEAH IT'LL HAPPEN. LOL!!!
Haha Rob your comment cracked me up! Glad you’re getting ready to get back out there! With this warm weather we’ve been having I definitely need to get out there!
Hey - Great stuff. I have a '16 trail edition and live in the Bay Area. Always looking for adventure....
Hey there Ben, I'm just east of Sac and I own a 2008 4x4 4runner. I'm actually going to go back up to Carr lake for the 4th time now with a 3rd different vehicle next weekend. First two vehicles were front wheel drive to Carr lake. LOL. I would love to meet up with you and camp. I made friends with you. Stay safe and Happy trails.
I love the intro bro! Keep up the great videos!
Thanks so much man!
These videos are great, we are planning a trip up to Bowman this June. I was wondering how long it takes to get to Bowman from the start of the trail?
Hey Russell, it's a fairly quick trail! Only took about an hour if I recall correctly!
Thanks I’ve been on and off about the rooftop mattress. Don’t think it’s for me. Idk how I feel about climbing in and out in the middle of the night when I gotta take a whiz lol
Great video! Thank you for posting this inspiration. Hoping to take my dad up there soon for his Bday. Can I ask… if you had the choice between using a Subaru Forester with AWD, or a Ford F-150 with RWD (but obviously better clearance), which would you choose for this trail?
Going from I80 > 20 > 18 forest lake, there is a bridge close the Bowman lake, is it fixed?? I went in there at around 2018 end 2019 starting and it was broken, only the big rigs (that too lifted) could barely make it through the ditch. love the video
Dude you were up in my neck of the woods! Should of checked out Mckinstry Lake :)
It's on my list now! Didn't realize you were out that way! Thanks Steven!
@@BenStinnett Yea man, would of been cool to meet up, you have me on IG hit me up sometime (Seek_Adventure.CA)
Ah! I will definitely do that! It's getting hard to keep track of who's who. haha
Awesome shots man! How's the road from Bowman to Faucherie? Do you think it requires a lift or would a stock SUV w/all-terrains be able to handle it?
Hey there! Thanks for watching! I don't think the road is too bad at all, there's a small section where you might have to pick your lines, but I saw plenty of crossovers/subarus out there so I wouldn't worry too much!
Great video. Coming up there Oct. 2022. Can I get to Bowman Lake in a Subaru Outback stock?
You think an RV (Solis on RAM Promaster) can make it to Bowman Lake? Looks like there are tight areas specially the gravel parts.
Hi Donna! The 1 lane road that hugs the cliff to get around the lake to the campsites would definitely be the trickiest part. I have seen some larger van builds out there, I would just make sure you're comfortable backing up and negotiating in tight areas, and maybe try to go in during off-peak hours to avoid lots of traffic coming out (i.e., avoid going in on Sunday afternoon when everyone else is packing up and heading out!)
Is that Milo’s truck? He did my CMC, he does dope work
It is! He's the best!
I'm a total beginner to off roading, only done one superrr easy trail at Bixby bridge. Is the road to Bowman lake one way or do you have to squeeze by folks going the other way? Also all I have is a Forester Wilderness (soon with a 2" lift), think that's enough to make it to the lake?
Would love to do this with my family. Will a stock TRD Off Road have any issues with the roads? Thanks in advance!
I think you'll be fine in a stock 4wd!
Gonna go here with my mom for 2 days in the our rav4 or 4Runner think we should be okay
Oh totally! You'll have a blast!
Any special directions I need to get to the dirt road out there or if I just put in directions to bowman lake that’s the route it takes you? Coming from Sacramento area
Hey, great video! We're planning to head out there with a stock 4wd RAV4. How's the condition of the road and do you think it should be fine clearance wise? We would just go to Bowman lake and back from the Truckee side. Thanks a lot!
Hey Martin! Sorry for my slow reply, I was out camping! I think you should be totally fine, the road is in good condition and most of the (small) "obstacles" have paths around them! Hope you have a blast!
Hey Martin - howd the stock tires hold up on the RAV4? I want to hit this trail in my stock jeep and am curious.
@@BenStinnett you should be fine. There was only one spot where the path was pretty washed out and required a bit of choosing the right line and about 3 attempts. I have dueller hl alenza tires on the rav4, and with careful, slow driving it was fine. The weekend was a blast, have fun!
@@BenStinnett just saw this now, I went and had a great time. Thanks!
@@martingaida1507 Think you could pull a teardrop through it?
Quick question bro. Is possible 2 wheel drive vehicle access to the campground?
Hey man, I think you could probably make it to some of the camp spots in a 2wd with some ground clearance as long as the trail is dry. I saw some 2wd vehicles (even saw a sedan out there!), but use your best judgement and be careful!
Could you potentially break down the total height / clearance needed for your truck? Wife and I are considering a 4Runner + iKamper, but prob can't squeeze in our condo's garage. Thanks! Keep the vids coming.
Hey man! I can try to get some more accurate measurements, but I can tell you that I definitely don't fit in regular garages. A tape measure eyeballed to the highest point of the tent puts me right around 7.5ft.
@@BenStinnett sorry, I know you've probably mentioned it in a rig walk. But have you lifted the vehicle from standard config? Garage clearance is currently 7.3ft I believe
@@BenStinnett Also, thank you for taking the time to reply
No worries man! Yeah, I'm lifted about 3" up front and 2.5" in the rear. And on bigger tires (285/70/17). You may actually be able to get away with it so long as you go with a slim roof rack and keep the suspension stock
Looks like a stock 4runner sits at 71.5", and the iKamper is 12.5" tall when closed. My roof rack from Victory 4x4 has the top of the crossbars sitting right at about 3" off the roof. So that's about 87" giving you a couple inches to spare? It might be possible!
I have a stock 4x4 Silverado. Is the road to Bowman doable in this configuration or do I need a lift with sliders? Thanks
Hey Sean! Saw plenty of stock Silverados and F-150s while I was out there. Nothing real challenging on the trail, just a bumpy one! Make sure you've got air in your spare (better yet carry a small compressor like the viair 88p) and you should have a great time!
Ben Stinnett thank you.
You are doing great. When's the next video coming out? Thumbs Up 👍
Thanks Ethan! You're doing great stuff yourself!
Anyone ever tell you that you have a smooth calming traveling voice? If I ever get tested for cancer, I’d want you to read me the results.
This cracked me up! Thanks Chance (let’s hope it never comes to that though 🙏)
Do you have to make a reservation to camp or can you just show up and camp?
Hey Soren! You can just show up!
How technical is the trail? Is this safe to go by myself?
Hey Jodie, I found this trail to be pretty mild. It's also very popular, so I'd feel comfortable going alone (you're likely to see lots of other people if you get into a situation where you need help)
What's the easiest route to the lake I heard theres hard and easy ways to get there depending on your rig
Hey James, I just followed the main route in and found it to be pretty mild. If you find a more challenging route I'd love to hear about it!
Going on a basic route to Bowman first time. Do you need to air down any spots? Beginner with similar rig.
Hey Michael, I aired down just to smooth out the ride a bit, but nothing on the trail really required it. Let me know how the trip goes!
@@BenStinnett one more question, are there accessible spots to just pull up closer to water to camp, and shallow areas for almost 2 and 4 1/2 year olds to just wade, run through ? Of course... Not this time of year. LOL. I'll be going on the first trip alone there, and then taking whole family, once it starts warming up Again.
@@MichaelKeelphotography yeah man, there's a solid number of spots on the water, and the end of the lake where the creek flows into the lake is nice and shallow. There are also spots right along the creek
@@BenStinnett thanks man really appreciate it. Just shot you some Instagram messages
How much you usually air down to?
Do you think a stock 4Runner with All Terrains could handle this trail?
Hey Joe! I think you should be good to go! There’s maybe one or two places where you’ll need to get out and scout and pick your lines, but you should make it no problem
Where did you get your hat?
Is it just me or it is kind of weird that the map at the campsite was upside down? Meaning South was at the top. I had to double check my maps to confirm, haha.
Yeah so strange! haha
Nice vid, love it! Question are you able to camp just anywhere there? Or do you need to do it at a campground? Looking for a place to go exactly like this but don’t like the disappointment of full or reserved campgrounds, and wish to “open camp” don’t know the right term or “dispersed camping” I’m a newbie, never camped before. All help greatly appreciated.
Hey Walfred! Bowman lake is sorta the best of both worlds for a starter trip! There are "designated" campgrounds all around the lake, from Bowman down to Faucherie. So they've got picnic tables and fire rings at some sites, others are just flat, clear areas. But all of them (or at least most of them) are first come first served. I think the trail is also just enough to cut down on the traffic, so on a non-holiday weekend, you're most likely going to find a place to camp. Good luck man!
Ben Stinnett thank you so much, will start planning on visiting soon, thanks for the quick reply!
Are you based out of The City?
Hey man! I am! So lucky to have so many great areas within an easy drive!
May you talk about tires and if a certain lift is needed? If people just want to overland and not rock crawl etc or vice versa. Do you need mud tires if your planning just to overland? Great video!
Definitely great questions! Have you seen my other video How to Start Overlanding on a Budget? I think you can definitely get away with swapping on some hybrid A/T tires and still be able to tackle most forest service roads.
What I would do is cook the potatoes first then add the meat when the potatoes are cooked so that the meat will not be over cooked.
Hey James! That’s a great tip man, thank you 🙏
@@BenStinnett I've been cooking it like that for years. Fry the potatoes up a bit for it will add more flavor to the dish 👍
12mpg to get to the trail head.... lol 😆
Are you on 35s?
33s!
sweet vid but tone down the audio book intro a little, it sounds like it's way too asmr
Haha thanks for the feedback man. Just learning and trying new things with each one!
Whats the recommended psi ?
I like to drop down ~20psi for most trails. In worse conditions or on sand I’ll drop to 12psi
