Dad was a dealer from 1985 to 1993. I'm not sure how much 86 fleer was produced, but it was certainly greater than demand. Dad had a case that was hard to unload. 87 was produced at a much lower number. Based on how much I saw at shows 88 was produced at a similar rate as 86. 1988 was when people started to look at sports besides baseball so 1988 fleet was a hit product thus fleer cranked up the press a bit by 1989. By 1990 basketball truly entered the junk wax territory. 1989 had no big rookies, but look at the price of 89 wax compared to 90 and it will collaborate my story. As a kid I started to get into basketball cards in 1988. I never did have a 86 Jordan, but don't ask me about the cards I did have. I sold everything in the late 90s before going to college. A 87 to 92 fleer run and a lot of 70s topps basketball including a complete 70-71 set. If only I had a time machine.

lol! I recall being in 7th grade and a local 7/11 still had 1986 Fleer basketball packs (this was early fall of ‘87) and they had a sticker price put on each pack of .35/ea.
I bought my dad a Jordan rookie at a baseball card shop in late 1987 for $3 and the shop owner gave me a free 86 Fleer sticker to go with it. He had about 50-60 MJ rookies all in sleeves and top holders back then. MJ was considered done after he broke his foot…even when he came back he wasn’t considered a player who would last.
Fast forward to spring of 1989 I was a freshman in HS and a guy in my art class brought an album full of 86 Fleers cards…a full sheet for each good player…about 6 pages in? Yep-a whole sheet of Jordan rookies. He gave me one too…the next day he brought a full box of unopened 1987/88 Fleer basketball wax and was giving them out to us kids like candy. My buddy wanted Magic Johnson cards so gave him every Magic I got for every Jordan he pulled lol…I have a lot of stories like that growing up….and to think at the time I was really actually trying to hunt down a MiNt 1986 Donruss Canseco rookie too lol

Joels dad turns out delivered product on his retail routes for various periodical companies so naturally he always encounted sports card cases and boxes of all sports, non-sports etc. He would “slightly” damage a case or box on its corner for example so he could write it off as damaged. The distributor didnt want to “damagedl product back because it took up room-they told him to just record anything damaged and get rid of it-they could just simply make a journal entry for credit…everybody wins right??
So I asked him how he had so many Fleer basketball cards in sheets…he told me “I got bored one day and picked out several boxes from some cases and opened them up enough to fet 9 players I liked on each sheet.” I asked him how long his dsd had been “collecting” lime this and he has been doing this for about 15 years by then and had storage lockers full amd a basement full of unopened stuff. That was back in 1989…where Joel and/or his dad ever ended up with all that stuff I have no clue today.

    Hi Mike,
Just going through all your 'Attic Finds' series. All of them are brilliant! 👍
Would've liked to know whether the buyer kept his word and gave the 40% cut (after his initial outlay) to the seller.
Assuming he did, these sort of deals can be beneficial for both buyer snd seller.
Keep up the top work. Some really great stories in these finds, and you do a great job in telling them. Some of them I already knew about (Nicholas Cage stolen comic book, for example). You raise a good point there in questioning whether he'd have bought that comic book if he wasn't such a 'reckless spender'.
Nb: Despite not being a card collector anymore, I'm a bit of a lurker on the Blowout forums. It's a little like panning for gold: you come across some golden nuggets in there, but also a lot of excreta. 😃

The best that I witnessed in one of his videos were 1979-80 Topps Hockey packs. He pulled multiple Gretzky Rookies. I don’t think he was knowledgeable about everything though.
