The issue with the sports card market going crazy is everyone thinks their old collections are worth a million dollars. From what I saw in this video this collection is worth no where near $8000. The Donovan Mitchell card you showed is not a rookie and worth maybe 10 cents. Still a cool video but I think you are way off on the value.

As a seasoned card collector, it is very important to keep your cards stored properly, to keep them in the very best condition possible. The cards in toploaders & mags should hold some decent value, as long as the previous owner took pride in his collecting. That being said, I do have some cheapo PC cards in good holders (penny sleeve, topload & team bag, at least). It kinda looks like they took his prized cards & left the rest. I didn't see any big hits, sorry to say.

$8,000....you should of been out at $800. You have to remember that some storage auctions are not lien auctions...sometimes the owners will allow someone to sell out of their facility for a cut of the sale price. This seemed very staged and is probably loaded with so so cards with not many heavy hitters. Also, if you ever do alot of storage units alot of the paper items have environmental damage on them even in a climate controlled unit. Alot will show mildew under a microscope. FYI

Looking at the whole situation, I strongly think that you (as the winner, among other bidders) might have been setup. Hard to prove it but look at the whole thing.
    1. The storage unit is primarily empty EXCEPT for the sports cards and that small dresser.
    2. The cards are in CLEAR / SEE THROUGH bins?! When anyone takes a picture(s) the insides can be seen.
    3. A big box that is OPEN which is full of ONLY cards?!
From my experience of finding sports cards in storage lockes, they are usually in closed boxes, or in sorter boxes, which is put inside a bin, not necessarily in a clear bin either... usually found in taped up boxes, not wide open.
What I think happened,l is that the storage had a unit that was up for sale but only had that one furniture or other small items that they knew was trash, and instead put those cards, clear bins, huge box that's wide open and filled it with their own trash cards (not worth a lot of money) and made it look like it was a treasure inside that storage unit.
This is a good lesson for you, especially in Vegas lol

The comics aren`t worth hardly anything (in the 0.50-2.00 range). If he pieced everything out, and spent years selling it all, he MIGHT get 1/2 of his money back, if he`s lucky. 90% of all that stuff is what is called mulch or slush. If this guy thinks this is a "score" for $8000, I could probably set him up with lots like this for the rest of his life, while making a good profit.
PS: Notice that his "few friends who know quite a lot about sportscards" never bought if off him? That`s because they told him that it will take the rest of his lifetime to sell everything to make anywhere close to what he paid for it all.

Out of those old singles some of the only ones that were interesting were the magic finest with a coating on it and the Tim Duncan sp authentic. You have a looooot of cards that aren't worth too much sadly. You should definitely keep the packs unopened as those are actually decent for resale value. It's very clear this guy saw the boom. Sold his good stuff. And put the rest in storage. If you think about how much he opened. If he left the good stuff you'd have at least some more real autos/jersey cards.
I will also say your friends were very optimistic in some ways. That Donovan Mitchell "rookie" is actually his second year card. So you were misinformed on that one.

So where do u buy or sell from? how do u profit?
i am considering buying some dozen(s) of cards not because i wana gamble to find a bargain, or to invest n resell, but for fun. like I'd buy cards worthless because they're reprints, just for fun. or a worthless card of a player i like. on ebay, there's tons.
Magic in college, Jordan playing golf, Tyson Chandler in high school (worthless but he went to high school around the same time n area as me), Tiger Woods, maybe Mickey Mantle 1951 reprint...and i found all of these cards n more for 99 cents each lol, free shipping after 30$ (sometimes free period).
Trading is more fun. i have a bunch of Donruss baseball cards from like 90 or around there, some big names like MJ that my brother damaged on the corner on, some good duplicates that i should trade, but ebay isn't about trading.
      Its basically all for fun.

It's not a 1/1 so stop with that. It is an error card with Donald Royal on front and Kobe on back worth a couple hundred bucks. Several of these errors were released.

That has to be one of the worst storage lockers I have ever seen. $200 worth of cards if that. I love people like this that buy all my junk at my garage sales and know nothing about the market. Yes Kobes and Jordans are worth money but not anything seen in this video. If that was true then I had a pallet of junk wax 5,000 count boxes that I could have retired on. I don’t know what’s worse, that someone actually top loaded all that garbage and actually spent money on a climate controlled storage unit or that someone spent $8000 to clean up their mess.

    • @jwolfe890
      @jwolfe890 Před 2 lety

I said the same thing! It's nothing but $200-300 of junk wax. If he offered to sell me the entire lot for $200 I'd definitely have to think about it, haha.
