    Entirely A Capella. That guy that doesn't play the harmonica also does crickets and any other sound you can come up with. He's a machine. He taught the others how to not play the harmonica too. That twangy sound is mimicking an instrument called a jaw harp, or jews harp. It's a little contraption you hold in your teeth and twang a lever with your fingers and change the tone by changing the shape of your mouth. You never see them anymore except in blue grass. My favorite Home Free piece is "In The Blood".

    Great! Now you're a home fry as well as a pentaholic. Happens to the best of us. Now you opened a new can of worms. Hf have a lot in common with ptx: great beat boxer, all members have awesome ranges. Hf has more "fun stuff" when ptx is more perfectionistic. I suggest "end of the road" and "beer budget" for completely opposing songs. Mostly country songs. Won "the sing off" after ptx.

  • @garyblocker9135
    @garyblocker9135 Před 4 lety +67

    Home Free Vocal Band was started 20 years ago by Adam Rupp, Chris Rupp & 3 others. After Chris (baritone) went solo in 2016, only beat boxer Adam Rupp remains from original members. They hit the national scene only after winning Season 4 of Sing-Off a year after PTX won Season 3.
    Adam Chance, a bass/baritone, replaced Chris (IMO, a fortunate thing) and holds down the bass line when Tim leads in his upper range. Together, they provide a low end that's consistently awesome.
    Originally, the group performed as much or more pop & traditional songs as country style works. With the addition of bass Tim Foust and high tenor Austin Brown, they have focused on country songs. But, they have recorded a number of pop covers (Ex 'All About That Bass'), traditional hymns & Xmas songs.

    • @DebVit
      @DebVit Před 4 lety +7

      Gary Blocker I think you do Home Free a disservice by saying they hit the national scene after they won Sing Off in 2013. They have been touring and singing professionally since 2008, the same year Rob Lundquist joined. Tim Foust sang as a guest on their 2010 tour and as a full time member in January of 2012. Austin Brown joined at the end of 2012.
      They sing much more than country. Just listen to them sing Bring Him Home from Les Miserables.

    • @garyblocker9135
      @garyblocker9135 Před 4 lety +4

      @@DebVit Apparently you did not hit "Read more" to see my entire comment. My phrasing may have understated their significance before the Sing-Off. But, from what I read, before 2012 they were an "a capella" group with a new bass about every year and no significant album sales.
      Beginning the 2013 Sing-Off Tour, we have seen them live 7 times - every tour with a stop in NC. And, of course, we own every CD published during that time. What they did before 2012 was, in comparison, not significant. I'm sure fans from the earlier years should disagree.

    They are older and have been singing for a lot longer than PTX. Chance, who was doing the mouth harp sound, is the baritone and also sings bass. Adam is the beat box and vocal percusionist. The group actually started in 2000 with completely different members (with the exception of Adam Rupp). They used to do all sorts of styles, including country. When Tim Foust (the bass and a Texas native) and Austin Brown (the lead tenor and a Georgia native) joined the group, they started doing more country. However, it was the Sing-Off that really turned them into a mainly country group. They actually auditioned for the Sing-off 3 times prior to Foust and Brown coming on as the new bass and tenor but didn't make it past auditions. When they auditioned a 4th time (this time with Foust and Brown), they intentionally marketed themselves as a country a cappella group, resulting in them actually getting on the show this time since country is rarely, if ever, heard in the a cappella world and was a unique flavor to add to the show - which they ended up winning btw. Since winning, they have mainly focused on country style music. You should watch their Sing-Off performance of "Ring of Fire." It's great! And their version of "Ring of Fire" with Avi, because - Avi.

    Home Free is "strictly" country, "strictly" because they will take songs of other genres and convert them into country music. Also, they've been around a lot longer than Pentatonix but didn't really get their big break until they won the Sing-Off on a season after PTX won the Sing-Off. Adam Chance (the young-looking Baritone) is a recent addition to the group who took the place of Chris Rupp (Adam Rupp's brother). The long-haired brunette is Tim Foust, the Bass. Personally, I feel that he's a better Bass than Avi but really only because he's got more years under his belt. I LOVE Avi and Tim.

      Actually, they can do plenty of other styles as well as country. Austin, for one, was trained to do musical theater, and if you look through the live stuff that is available on CZcams, you'll find quite a few fan recordings of him singing "Bring Him Home," from Les Miserables.
      For a little MoTown, try "Blue Ain't Your Color." In that case, they took a country song, and spiced it up into the other genre.
      As for this one ("Man of Constant Sorrow"), it's much more rhythm and blues than country.
      There are plenty of other examples of their artistic flexibility. :-D

    Yay! Glad You found them... There are two versions of Ring of Fire. One is when they we're on the Sing Off with Tim hitting some amazingly low notes, the second version is the five Home Free guys featuring Avi Kaplan. It really showcases two amazing basses.

    Thank you for reacting to my favourite group, and I look forward to seeing more from you. 🙂 You've had some great suggestions already - can I echo the advice to wait on Mayday until you've seen a few more of their videos. They've covered some classic songs, but their latest album is mostly originals - the title track, Dive Bar Saints, is fun and shows some different things they can do.

    Home Free is mostly country, but they can definitely handle other genres too. They did a great cover of Boyz II Men's End of the Road that you have to check out. Since you are watching PTX's winning appearance on The Sing Off, you will also have to watch Home Free's win the following season.

    Just found your channel today Kyle, and really like your honest and genuine reactions. I, like you, didn't come to enjoy a capella until a bit later in life. I'll be honest, these recent a capella groups have totally changed how I listen to music. I'm glad you have found Home Free, these guys are incredible. Please take the time to get to know them, they have so many good videos it is impossible to point you to just one or two, but Ring of Fire (with Avi) is the usual top recommendation. Another group for you to check out is Voiceplay, I see others are recommending them too so yes do it. I'm pretty sure you'll like their arrangements as well so give them a listen. Keep it up!

    Glad you started doing Home Free. If you want to see their humorous side, check out Champagne Taste on a Beer Budget (Look for a surprise cameo in the bar scene), The Butts Remix, chicken fried pop medley, full of cheer, and if you are a fan of The Big Lebowski, check out This is How We Roll. Like someone else said, see a few of their videos before Mayday (which sounds amazing) but is confusing until you know everyone's normal. If given the time, I would name every video because they are all great. Boondocks show how flawlessly they can do a mashup,

    Kyle, others have given a quick history of Home Free, but to answer the who's who question...
    When you see all five standing together in this video here's the lineup:
    Front Row (Left to Right)
    - Rob Lundquist, Tenor (in overalls)
    - Austin Brown, High Tenor
    - Tim Faust, Bass
    In the back you have...
    Adam Chance, He replaced Chris Rupp (Baritone) in 2016.
    Adam Rupp, Beatboxer and the only founding member still in the group.
    Even though Chance filled the Baritone slot he's a bass. Tim Foust is known as one of the lowest basses out there, but he has a five octave range. Now with another bass in the group he has the option to sing tenor when he chooses.

    Love your stories and your reactions. You will love Homefree. They won the Sing-off after Pentatonix and do a lot of country but more also. You should check out their older mash ups like Butts medley and well just any of their stuff. Try Can't Stop the Feeling to see how versatile they can be.

    Hi, Kyle! I just discovered your channel because of Home Free. I’ve been a fan since their Sing Off season (4). As some people here have stated, Home Free is the first Country A Capella group, but their sound is unique. Sure, they can sound pretty country (like this one), but they’re oh, so much more. I’ve seen ITunes list their new album, “Dive Bar Saints” as Contemporary Country. Their new album has 10 originals and 2 covers. If you like Country, check out their cover ofJohn Denver’s “Take Me Home, Country Roads”. I always considered myself a Rock Music fan and loved the Eagles. Well, check out their cover of the Eagles’ version of “Seven Bridges Road” (one of my favs since the Eagles are one of my top 10 Rock Super Groups). With all that being said, welcome to Home Fry (what we fans are called thanks to Ben Folds calling Home Free that on the Sing Off. Lol) land!! I really think you’ll enjoy the group, their style, how they come across through their videos as being down to earth. They really are! Thanks for this reaction. I will hit the “sub’ button when I’m done here. Sorry for the long post.

    Just finished watching this video. I can’t wait for you to watch Ring of Fire and Elvira by Home Free. And honestly they started before Pentatonix but they did do the Sing-Off after Pentatonix which gave them more publicity. As far as I know they do only country. I’ve seen their live shows and it is not disappointing - you’ll definitely fall in love with this group as much as Pentatonix.

    They are mostly country, some pop. Tim is the bass, he's got crazy range. Austin is the lead singer, powerful voice. Adam is the beatboxer, Rob, with the beard, is the tenor, and Chance is the one in the background, he's their baritone/bass. he does both. They have a lot of fun to go along with their insane talent! Try reacting to Hillbilly Bone!

      I'd put this high on the reaction list for a few reasons:
      - The arrangement blends multiple genres wonderfully
      - It's got such a rich, full sound you'll have to remind yourself it's acappella
      - You can see more of their humor in a fun, upbeat song like 'Butts'
