  • Humanists UK have called for the Government to develop national guidance for England on the question of religious practices in schools following today’s High Court ruling which ruled in favour of the so-called ‘prayer ban’ at Michaela Community School, Brent.
Humanists UK Chief Executive, Andrew Copson, appear on Sky News on 16/04/2024, to talk about the ruling, and the need for wider reform on religious practices in schools.
'We really feel the need at the moment for national guidance that will help schools not have to take cases like this, and allow parents and pupils to have clear expectations of what they can or can't do in the school day.'
'Let's get rid of the law requiring collective Christian worship. Let's bring in a law requiring inclusive assemblies that draw on a range of traditions.'
'Let's give space in the curriculum for children to genuinely learn about a wide range of different religions and beliefs. And let's try and foster mutual respect for people's different practices where they can be accommodated.'

I used to work in a Catholic school. A depute head-teacher once told an assembly of older kids about to do their exams that if they found themselves stumped by a question, they should pray to a particular saint (I forget which). Never mind that this would be cheating if it actually worked - I think she would have been better telling them to prepare rather than relying on supernatural intervention.

Separate church and state institutions. ✊
Our whole system of governance is antiquated and hard wired to support the ‘old boy’ autocracy.

How expensive would it be to remove faith and dogma from all schools? You only need one sentence to teach faith: " Some choose, or are forced, to believe things with no evidence...the end."

How is that 'faiths and dogmas being moral ' going for humanity lately??? Not so well i hear.

Will someone including Humanists UK translate this program into Tamil and so benefit millions of Thamizhs? Tamil Nadu State in South India has more than a century of propaganda of rationalism, atheism, humanism, and secularism in its remarkable recent social history and it would be enlightening and interesting how they debate and discuss this issue in particular...

Prayers to which god or gods??? There's more than 2 million in fiction to choose from so are they going to sing prayers to all of them? Besides......religion is pointless and out of touch, it's an institution of ignorance. I say teach kids more science and psychology, rather than praying to a thing that is basically, a supernatural figment of imagination.

We also need to rid the House of Lords of unelected C of E Bishops who are given privileged status when speaking. Unfortunately this would upset the `Establishment`.

I agree with you! If aliens ever visited our planet they would have an incredible amount of superiour knowlege to have discovered us in this vast universe. Im sure they would think we are a stupid race to hold dear these thousends of out dated conflicting religious beliefs, that give no answers. Who created your perticular god out of thousands? No answer, except thats my faith, look up what faith means (belief without any evedence) stupid, yes i think so, science gives us answers, not faith!

I attended Catholic school in Dagenham, England and was an Atheist even if I did not know it at the time. Religion should be taken out of schools. I raised my two daughters to be secular and my grandkids follow suit.

As always Andrew makes his points clearly and in a considered way despite this clearly disappointing the interviewer. The simplest way is to make all state funded schools entirely secular so that there is proper intergration and no state funding for devisive religious views. Everyone should be free to send their kids to a faith scholl but if they want that they should pay for it not expect the UK state to fund thier proselytising of the young.
