It was bad in my opinion and I usually don't feel strongly about kids animation.
The story was bad and predictable, especially if you saw the trailer. The driving force of ruby being friends with the mermaid was her stress about people talking about the kraken for like a day. After that she chose to blow her friends off and ignore the prom stuff. I could see if they did something like cancel prom because of the kraken and the prom would be in a boat, causing ruby to feel guilt about it and not wanting to be around her friends.
And then the whole 2nd and 3rd act was her training to get tricked in the most obvious way, I thought they were gonna subvert expectations by having the mermaid being honest about the other mermaids still wanting to fight and they could've helped create peace despite how their families felt.
Or she could've kept the trident secret and said her mom was trapped in that vortex or something.
And the whole "mermaids don't age" thing was weird to add.

There were some things I wish they could’ve explored in the movie. Ruby, Gilman, like why are the Kraken and Mermaids enemies how did the war start? What’s Narissa backstory? Why did Agatha and Grandma have a falling out? Are there other mermaids out there? How did Ruby’s parents get married? What other creatures are out there?

None of this really needs any further explaining than what we got.
"like why are the Kraken and Mermaids enemies how did the war start?"
Mermaids wanted to rule the ocean. The krakens got in their way.
      "What’s Narissa backstory?"
Well, she didn't have much as a kid. Just loving parents, stability, and a castle, and a thriving mermaid kingdom for her to inherit. Useless crap like that.
"Why did Agatha and Grandma have a falling out?"
Grandmamah kept pushing Agatha to be a warrior-queen and wanted Ruby to carry the torch. Agatha wanted a normal life and thought that would be safer for Ruby. This is in the film.
"Are there other mermaids out there?"
      Presumably.
"How did Ruby’s parents get married?"
IDK bro, I guess they must love each other or something. Do we need to see them having a sea wedding in a sea church for you to understand what happened?
"What other creatures are out there?"
Leviathans and at least one Devil Whale, but that's beyond the scope of the movie's plot.

This movie is a simple but very refreshing one. We have too many overly complicated movies in theaters right now and it’s like you gotta watch all the past installments to understand the one you’re about to see and while it’s fun for long term fans it’s not something that makes for a spur of the moment day at the movies. This film could’ve been the solution to that but they set it up to fail. Tbh, I think this is one of my favorite DreamWorks movies and I'm a HUGE DreamWorks fan! I think this deserved way more than it got. Also, I compare it to Disney's movies that they were releasing, I think it was better than Elemental but you can't compare the two since Elemental had a completely different story. I think a better comparison is Turning Red, since they're both coming-of-age stories where the girl turns into some big monster-like animal. A cute red panda doesn't have the same effect as an enormous kraken, though. Also, Ruby Gillman did a better job on touching on the topics of family/generational trauma and also generational bond, and also the whole thing with the romance as well. Like, I think Ruby's a better role model because she actually liked a guy who she had spark with, while Mei was just simping for the "popular" boys. I also like how Ruby seems more awkward and shy, so she's a bit more relatable too. Even though we all know Chelsea ended up being the villain in disguise, I liked seeing the relationship between the two girls instead of having an actual mean girl, I hate when movies have the mean popular chicks. I don't like pitting kids against each other, especially not when they're 12-16 year old girls because the way movies portray this sort of thing, girls get really scared about high school and have trouble finding themselves later on. I don't think I can explain it real well, hopefully you know what I mean. Like, I feel like when they always have the "mean girl" stereotype, a lot of girls are afraid to go to highschool because of it. Another thing, this movie had the typical DreamWorks humor as well as telling a very well written story. If only DreamWorks could come together for Chicken Run 2... and I'm also worried about Trolls 3 as well.
So yeah, Ruby Gillman obviously deserves better and I hate how DreamWorks went downhill because of it. I hope it gets the love it deserves for the digital release

Chelsea saved Ruby’s life, gave ruby the space that she needed, did not pester her in being friends at first, helped Ruby come out of her shell, and embrace her Crackin side, and genuinely work to be a nice person. In my opinion, there was corporate meddling combined with a hate Boner for Disney, because in the original story, Chelsea was the mermaid queen‘s daughter, who had a genuine friendship with Ruby, but wanted revenge on Ruby’s mother, for killing her own mother. Having Chelsea be evil, for no reason is just unbelievable, and reminds me of Hans from frozen. I hate twist villains, but I don’t deny evil people exist. Also, the idea of someone toxic being pure ultimate evil is a bit far-fetched. I was a neurodivergent boy in high school. I really enjoyed this movie. I’m honestly sad that it failed because I don’t think it deserved too. Was it perfect? No. But was still watchable to where you can say “that was good”. I know people have put DreamWorks on this high and unrealistic expectation of making masterpieces after PIB 2, making people forget that DW has always made hit or misses. In the end, I hope that this movie gets the recognition it deserves because I feel this movie could become popular at some point in time.
Also, I thought Chelsea was pretty cool. Just saying..😏

I seriously really liked and enjoyed Ruby Gillman a lot. More then I thought I would honestly, I thought the movie was very cute and a nice simplistic coming-of-age type of story with Ruby embracing and learning about her Kraken nature. I felt and wish there's could've been a bit more with it in some areas of the movie, because while I still enjoy this movie...I felt some parts were pretty real typical and predictable within the movie. Especially dealing with the Mermaid girl and her turning out to be the big bad that her mom fought also I felt that there's should've been more mermaids and more expanded on this war between the mermaids & krakens. I think this movie probably would do a lot better as a cartoon show. But still a pretty cute enjoyable movie.

I loved this movie. I don’t care what anybody says, it was amazing and deserves better. The reason it failed can probably be summed up this way:
It didn’t fail because it was a bad movie, it failed because it was set up to. The marketing, the choice to release it alongside Elemental and Spiderverse 2, everything that happened to this movie almost seemed intentional. Almost like it was made to fail. If so, it really isn’t fair on this film.

It's a combination of 00s high school movies (complete with the mean girl fake friend) with fantasy. An obvious comparison is Turning Red but one that also came to mind is Disney's 2005 teen movie/superhero mashup Sky High, especially the Gwen character who is a lot like Chelsea. Ruby Gillman also has a lot of heart and charm. I hope it's rediscovered and gets its due.

@@nas0518 , I’m just stating how companies work. When a film loses money, a studio likely will not risk losing even more money again. The closest I can think of an underperforming film getting a tv show that wasn’t half bad was Godzilla 1998. The planned sequel got scrapped after that film underperformed but we did get that fairly decent animated show afterwards that acted as a sequel to the film.
A couple of other examples were there was planned sequels was for Green Lantern 2011 and Power Rangers 2017. Both had sequels planned but were also both scrapped after their box offices tanked badly too.
It doesn’t always matter what the director wants, the studio usually controls what happens.
It doesn’t also help that Ruby just wasn’t that great of a film and was just bland & forgettable. Whether it was the writers or studio’s fault IDK. The script just left a lot to be desired.
At least Elemental made a 180 at the box office, as that too started off slow. But it caught fire and rebounded to $423 million worldwide over the last two months while Ruby was pulled from theaters early last month after low ticket sales. It’s only netted $41 million worldwide and is likely going to cost Dreamworks millions of dollars as its production budget was only $70 million and even more when you factor in marketing & advertising.
But the key there was Elemental actually had heart, soul, amazing writing, and characters.
Ruby hardly had any of that.

I also like how this movie did none of the three major Western studio animated movie trendy tropes: Neither "generational trauma", "fantasy creatures as an allegory for racial groups", nor "twist villian". They did all three of the things you mentioned. The Kraken’s are an allegory for immigrants moving to a new land as confirmed in the original idea for the movie “meet the Gillmans”, the generational trauma was pretty on the nose with Rubys mother, having issues with her own mother, and Chelsea was a twister villain, even though it was obvious, which makes the twist even worse. Because the movie actually wants you to believe that it was surprising that Chelsea was evil. Face it, even if you think the movie was good, you can’t deny it was clichéd western animation.

    @supersonicbro Před 9 měsíci +7

The mom keeping it secret that they were kraken was dumb, why not just tell them so they won't randomly get wet by accident and get shocked. Did she not think anything would happen while living on the water? And the whole "we need to stay moist" thing is dumb. There's water almost everywhere.
Luca had them in a water town because they started in water and found a nearby town.
Turning red had the mom not tell her because she knew it would happen but didn't think it was going to happen so soon. And saw it as something to be cured anyway when it came up.

I also just wanna comment about Chelsea, she is so masterfully written and I love her character more and more during rewatches. Like you can see her manipulate Ruby throughout the film and it leaves such a huge pit in my stomach it is so well done. In scenes they come off more villainous once you know as well as some scenes she is creepily smirking in the background or having blank empty stares. There are so many hints to her being evil and I had a vibe the whole time she was and the twist to her being a villain made her even more scary and threatening. Like it was not thrown in at the end there were so many hints when you pay attention but also not too many that it would be obvious to Ruby herself. She is my fav villain and character of all time, she is a very good manipulator and also voice acted to perfection. Her design is also just so brilliant. She is also just a perfect written depiction of a narcissists and I just applaud the writing team for how well they did on her.

With all due respect, I disagree. Hi to felt uncomfortable around Chelsea, but that was only because I knew she was going to be the villain because it was spoiled in the trailers. To be honest, I don’t think anyone would have known that Kelsey was the villain had it not been for the trailers or if they hadn’t seen the movie. The fact is I have heard people say that there are so many tools of manipulation, and while I agree, there were also signs of genuine compassion at the same time. Chelsea saved Ruby’s life, gave Ruby space when she told her that she didn’t wanna be friends, health, Ruby embrace for Kraken identity, and made Ruby genuinely happy. I know it was all for show and I know it was manipulation, but it felt so forced. I have known people who were genuinely manipulative and Chelsea didn’t seem to be like that, I also knew people to be genuinely nice but very vain and inconsiderate, and they kind of remind me of Chelsea. Just my thoughts.

Also, when I find the most interesting about the movie is that the grandmother seemed to be the most evil before the lame twist was revealed. Let’s review, she did not visit her grandchildren or make any attempt to contact them for years. She only seem to care about Ruby because Ruby was her heir. She has known to have killed mermaids, which are essentially immortal teenage girls. She has a sense of blood lust. She refers to humans as stupid monkeys and crust dwellers. And she doesn’t seem to have a good relationship with her own daughter, enough for her daughter to leave her and never contact her. Her own son calls her a warlord, and a frightening one at that. The grandmother seem to be the perfect villain, and she gave me the most villainous vibes. We don’t often think of our relatives or our grandmothers as capable of evil but in my opinion, she was the most offputting of the entire movie. The grandmother may not have been manipulative but honestly, that’s because she didn’t need to be. She seemed evil enough.

Let’s talk about Agatha ruby’s mom .she’s literally hiccup dad who want to protect their kids no matter what .Other than that, in the first httyd people thought that dragon are evil but the truth is they’re sweet and kind creatures as same as shrek where people think that ogre is monster (I’m sorry my English is really bad don’t misunderstand)

I know I've said this before, but I'll say it again--Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken is a 3D animated kids movie that's completely full of wasted potential. It has a mediocre and generic plot with a highly obnoxious and predictable main female villain in the form of Chelsea Van Der Zee/Queen Nerissa who's just nothing more and nothing less than a cheap knockoff of Ariel from The Little Mermaid. Chelsea is without a doubt the worst main villain in Dreamworks history. Plus, when Chelsea transforms into her giant monster mermaid form, she looks more like a Siren than a mermaid. In fact, it would've made a lot more sense if the krakens were at war against the SIRENS instead of the mermaids. And making mermaids evil just for the sake of the plot is not only ridiculous but it's also just bad, lazy writing altogether. Besides, Disney already tried the whole "narcissistic mermaids" cliche with the Neverland mermaids in Peter Pan 1 & 2 alongside the Disney Fairies book series, which just makes this said cliche dull and boring all over again.
Not to mention the fact that Ruby's grandma, The Queen of the Seven Seas, came off as not only vain, controlling, and bloodthirsty but also highly xenophobic towards the other sea monster races and even towards the humans as well. Plus, there's just one question that I really need to ask about the plot of this movie--Why can't the krakens just learn to get along and live together in harmony with the mermaids and all the other mythical sea creatures? I mean, they all inhabit all the same exact seven seas and I'm pretty sure that not all mermaids and other mythical sea monsters are evil. And who's to say that there aren't any evil krakens lurking in the depths of the ocean right now.
Plus, the only two things that were actually good about this movie were the animation (except for the designs of the human characters) and how much of a relatable main protagonist Ruby Gillman was in the film.
This whole entire movie is just nothing but a lazy, cheap knockoff of Turning Red meets The Little Mermaid 2 with a hint of Luca, Encanto, Raya and the Last Dragon, and The Incredibles 1 & 2--that's it.
And but like I've also said before, this is what happens when you make an animated movie for kids with only a $70 million budget with very poor marketing. Not to mention the fact that the Writers' Strike in LA is still going right now.
In conclusion, that's the reason why I gave Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken a 4.5/10 with a three-star rating and a solid C-.

Wow, what a bullshit non-review full of meaningless complaints. I'm not even sure where to start with this drivel. How can you even be stupid enough to call Chelsea an Ariel "cheap knockoff" when she's clearly a parody? That's like calling Shrek 2's Fairy Godmother a "cheap knockoff" of the one from Disney's Cinderella.

The movie would have been way better as just like a "sneaking out to go to prom" slice of life comedy like the start was hinting at (and looking at the development entry on Wikipedia and reading between the lines, I get the impression it started out like this) and the action bits are by far the weakest part, but it was still fun and should have done better. Not sure it should be a cult movie, but it shouldn't have been a flop.
