The mermaid being evil was supposed to be a twist?
That was like the one thing they advertised.
They were expecting a twist like grandma was evil or sth. Because there is no twist, the trailer is basically saying hey you don't need to watch this movie because we reveal the plot and ending of it already
Also they mock the audience for being mermaid lovers. Can you blame us? Mermaids can be both dangerous or kind.

The issue is the fact that they legit advertised that they were trying to hide the fact that they were human, but like she's blue, and that isn't very hard to see. Wow, I guess the "villian" was a very clever person to find her "secret".

And I know I’m going to get hit with a “The joke isn’t funny,” response, but saying that a joke isn’t funny is a fair complaint. Ignoring a joke and taking it more seriously than it takes itself, I feel, is not a fair complaint.
@@n0dash18problem is, if you base the whole set up of the movie on a joke, the whole movie becomes a joke. That would be fine if it were a pure comedy, but parts of the movie pretend to have serious story.
People who are trying to take this seriously are the ones trying to find something in favor of this movie and inevitably fail.
It's crazy how the trailers straight-up spoiled the whole movie. If you watched the clips online, it's like you saw the whole movie!
That's why a good number of people started going conspiracy theorist and writing how the movie should go, like the grandmother turning out to be the real villain and the kaiju battle was some power fantasy daydream Ruby had before the halfway mark of the film.
The fact that the story was exactly as advertised damaged it.
Trailers are doing that period these days, it ain't just pixar/dreamworks, the trailers are disgustingly blatant about showing key points of the film.
Yeah, the instant Nerissa saved Ruby, I was like "this fake bitch better not fake friendshi- Ah, there it is."

It’s funny how so many flaws with this film story can be fix by just having the mermaid not turn out to be actually evil but no we gotta stick to Disney, and make the redheaded mermaid, super evil in the end no matter if our films story suffers because of it.

The movie confused me when I saw. How the hell was she “lied to” by her mom about being a kraken, especially since she knew she wasn’t human and they had all these rules about blending in with other humans. And she spent the whole movie wanting to be normal, and when she learned that she was a kraken she was angry because she didn’t want to be one, yet she ran away to find her grandmother because she wanted to learn more about being a kraken?

Huh, yeah that's a pretty wide plot hole. I was gonna say maybe she just knew she was some sorta sea creature but not a potential giant monster,,, but then what name did she assign to that? and would she know that without thinking to ever go in the ocean? and has she never been swimming? never showered? it's very silly.
To be fair, she already knew whe was a kraken (the species), but her being a giant kraken on the other hand was the thing that shocked her
She knew she was a Kraken. She _didn’t_ know that she would grow fifty-feet tall if she ever got wet, which is a pretty big thing to _not_ tell your kid when you live next to the sea. She basically just didn’t know all the details of her species.

I'm surprised he didn't sin the scene where Chelsea looks sad for Ruby and the only people who could possibly see her face at that moment is the audience!
That moment only exists to make the viewer think she really does care so that the creators can have their "shocking villain twist" later.
That is huge evidence this went through many drafts, and cobbled them together. That kind of thing happens.

This Chelsea thing was very badly done and honestly the trailers spoiled the whole movie. Lmao so badly marketed, but it’s not like it would have saved the movie anyway. Had Chelsea secretly been good, but misunderstood would have made it a little better.

True, bioluminescence means you can glow on your own, meaning you don't need anything, not even electricity, to help with that.

Ultimately, my biggest issue with this movie comes from how unpleasantly squishy every single thing is. The movie draws direct attention to a specific subset of characters being invertebrates, which is fine, and yet inexplicably everything is animated as though their spines are made of gelatin or something. It's definitely a style, but not necessarily one I want to look at for ninety minutes

I’m surprised that there’s absolutely NO bonus sins for how much the climax part of the movie was spoiled through marketing, and maybe some parts after it.
I always thought that the audience should find out themselves that Chelsea is the antagonist of the movie when watching it for themselves, not being deliberately nearly spoiled by the entire movie’s plot through its (somehow lack of) promotional adverts.
Narrissa's 'kaiju' form having harsh white seafoam for hair contrasts really well with her deep ruby-red coloring and blue secondary colors, I wish it had been utilized more.
I know most of the character art style is a little... gummy? But the environmental shapes and textures were really wonderful imo!
This movie is basically "Turning Red" but with a more dishwater premise.
So many movies have the parent go "Oh yeah, I turn into a giant monster too, sorry I didn't tell you!"

The biggest issue with the movie was the fact that they basically put the whole movie, including the "surprises", in the trailers. There was no point in watching it because you basically already did watch it.

Just like this movie, my friend tried to ask me to the prom by jumping out of a trash can that was disguised as a whale, but he blubbered all his words after ingesting most of the whale blubber in the aforementioned trash can making his proposal sound more like Marine Biology gibberish.

As someone who had a very strong mermaid phase as a kid, I'm sad the mermaid turned out to be evil.
It was meant to make fun of Disney, though it worked for Shrek it failed here. Especially because they’re trying to say real mermaids are evil when they’re just confusing them with sirens.

But sirens were originally a type of birdfolk in the Odyssey. Even if they both used weaponized singing, it's bizarre that "siren" became a title for female merfolk.

in real life, female angler fish are the bigger ones, and male anglerfish are very small. to mate, the smaller male latches onto the female, merges with her body, and becomes the reproductive organ for the female, so basically the small male kraken thing is a lot more horrifying to think about. this also implies ruby's "father" isnt her biological father
Although apparently only royal female kraken are massive, so thats not how it works for other krakens.
To be fair, this movie DID have a much better plot (There’s a bunch of scrapped storyboard uploaded to CZcams - look them up), but I’m pretty sure that it hit the corporate level and got all chopped up into, well…

This was a film that could have had potential to really be something better, but it was like Universal/Comcast delivered an ultimatum: “Have it hit 90 minutes, or we cancel the project and take a write-off.”

I took the time to purchase the movie disc (mainly since theatres removed the film within two weeks) my main complaint would be the reliance on modern trends and tech, and the fact that they revealed the twist in THE ORIGINAL TRAILER
the funniest thing is the mermaid actually being nerissas daughter and the two girls allying two waring species is 20X more intriguing than the actual film plot

Chelsea/Narissa is the biggest disappointment of the movie. I was down on a Dreamworks take on Turning Red, since it was gonna have something to stand out, and a mermaid equivalent of Regina George seemed to be that something. Alas, it was not meant to be.

When DreamWorks saw that this was releasing at the same time as the live-action The Little Mermaid remake, they decided to market the movie around the ending twist.
I actually would preferred if the movie didn’t have a prom subplot and instead focused on Chelsea/Narissa trying to not become a villain or go on a redemption arc.
I couldn’t tell what this film was about and thought the red haired girl was the protagonist (based on the marketing)
To sum this movie up, somebody watched "Turning Red", "American Dragon: Jake Long", and "The Little Mermaid 2" and said "Let do all of those, but with a kraken."

Krakens as a concept extend beyond Clash Of The Titans (1981). At least your theory would be somewhat creative though, this was more "what if sea monsters were the GOOD GUYS and sea not-monsters were the MONSTERS?" which is pretty darn shallow.
@@PanSpaceman Kraken’s are also only found in Norse Mythology , the sea monster that Perseus fought against in the original was a creature named Cetus and was more of a water dragon of sorts.

There is actually a species of octopus (called the blanket octopus) that has one of the largest sexual dimorphism size differences of the whole animal kingdom, which is possibly where they took inspiration from. However, the male dies after reproduction so either the dad is a lie or they didnt include that part because this is a kids movie

I read a news article trying to turd polish the film by saying this was a good movie that didn't get the right marketing and that's why it failed.
