How lovely to see it shiny and new! So many childhood memories were made in that concrete doughnut!

The wide shot of the Television centre looks like a model.
    So clean.

A lovely brand new Television Centre which held a special place in the nation's heart for many years - until the BBC in their wisdom disposed of it.

To be fair, it was blooming expensive and not a good spend of taxpayers' licence fee money in a time when TV can be made without the needs for such lavish studios and sets,

@@UrbanPicturesUKblx! It was the making of Britain and the BBC and the destruction of Britain and the BBC to dissipate out of the Nation’s capital and gift the Dream Factory to ITV who only employ mates and dodge scrutiny

I lived in White City between 2007 and 2011. Very fortunate to past by the old BBC every day. Yes, I had the chance to visit that.

I visited TVC in 1986 (or maybe 87?), when I was looking for a job in computer graphics (I didn't get a job, but they very kindly showed me around). Amazing to be inside the place! Highlights included being shown the computer whose sole purpose was to generate the spinning globe logo (for BBC2, I think?), and also entering a room and noticing a shelf by the door with all the cutout figures from the Captain Pugwash series just lying on it, abandoned. Good grief, I wonder what those would fetch on eBay now...!

It's still being used as a Television centre and its in high demand.
The have added flats and apartments.
The original plan was to demolish the entire centre. I'm glad that didn't happen.

At 1:16, the Marconi Mark IV - also used from the early 1960's to 1965-66 at CBS studios including Television City in Hollywood.

The BBC shot itself in the foot when it got rid of it. TVC served to focus the entire operation and creativity ran amok there for decades. It was sold it off to much denigration and disapproval at the time and everything has arguably been downhill ever since.

Television Centre was Britain’s - and perhaps Europe’s - answer to [CBS] Television City here in the States; dozens of iconic shows were taped on those lots (Television Centre: Monty Python, Doctor Who, Top Of The Pops, Strictly Come Dancing (which would be imported worldwide as Dancing With The Stars) and countless “Britcoms”; Television City: Carol Burnett, Sonny & Cher, Young and the Restless, All In The Family, The Masked Singer, American Idol, the aforementioned DWTS, Real Time with Bill Maher, and countless game shows (Match Game, $25,000 Pyramid, Press Your Luck, The Price Is Right, etc.)).
Fremantle moved American Idol and TPIR to new studios in 2023 while Television City will be undergoing renovations.

It's been turned into luxury flats. I believe they kept some studios which are leased back to the BBC.

    • @bigmanjorge

It was owned by the BBC up until 2013, when they decided to sell it to a development company.
However a few years later they decided to rent some of the studios out, so it’s now a mix of BBC studios, ITV studios and housing.

It retains some studios which appear to be used by ITV to churn out their appalling daytime schedule as well as other stuff for the hard of thinking, like Ant and Dec.

Only three studios out of the original eight remain today. Studio TC1 is their general entertainment studio. Studio TC2 and TC3 are block booked to ITV Daytime, who produce Good Morning Britain and This Morning in TC3 with Lorraine and Loose Women in TC2.
