  • "Pointing a camera at Russia from here is absolutely forbidden. You can point it along Russia, beside Russia and in front of Russia - but not at Russia."
Magnus Magnusson reports from Kirkenes, the 'Land's End' of Norway, on the border with the Soviet Union.
"About 1,000 yards away, there's a Russian guard post, which has a pair of binoculars permanently mounted and manned, which is glaring right at us at this moment. Which is a little disconcerting."
"On my right-hand side, there's a Norwegian guard post that also has a pair of mounted binoculars, but I understand that they're not very good binoculars."
Just across the Norwegian-Russian frontier, the Russian village of Boris Gleb is to be promoted as a tourist destination and the Soviet government plan to relax the current entry restrictions for visiting foreigners.
Scandinavians are already allowed entry to the region, and Magnusson, an Icelandic passport holder, crosses the border into Russia leaving the British film crew behind.
    Originally broadcast 20 May, 1965.

"The Norwegians shrugging their shoulders good-humoredly" about being spied on by the Soviets is probably one of the funniest and most accurate descriptions I've ever heard of the Norwegian temperament, and I'm saying that someone born and raised in Norway.

Anyone I ever met that was in the British Army always rated the Norwegian armed forces very highly - and the population as a whole !

I went there in winter 2013. The gate was different (bigger and beefier) but still looked inadequate as far as keeping out anyone with a decent angle grinder. I couldn't see any soldiers. Presumably, there was video and infrared surveillance.

When I think of Magnus Magnusson, I think of Mastermind.
When I think of Mastermind, I remember all the parodies.
I guess it was *that* well known, back in the day.
