Michigan’s stadium is the largest in the USA and 3rd largest in the world. Their fight song is consistently rated the most stirring in the country.

You are right about distances. University of Oregon is about 300 miles from Seattle, and about 500 miles from San Fransisco. So, in a lot of cases, I'm sure distance to pro sports is a factor. Though, I think the main thing is just a huge tradition of supporting university sports that goes back before professional was a thing.

Alabama's is Dixieland Delight by the group Alabama. For the longest time it was baned from being played at the stadium because of the adlibs that were added in by the fans. The administration agreed to let us bring it back if we changed to adlibed words to more "family friendly" lyrics. It worked, for the most part.

One thing you have to keep in mind is that most of our states are comparable to European nations in size. But a significant number of states don't have a professional team. College is it for us. Imagine having no pro teams in great Britain and having to go to France to watch "your" team play. That's reality for a lot of us. Oklahoma University (122 m /197 km) and Oklahoma State University (148m/237km) are way closer than Houston (435m/700km) or Kansas City (312m/502km). Now admittedly, Dallas is "only" 200 miles/ 320 kilometers away, but I HATE the Cowboys

Most of the Power 5 teams have huge stadiums, some seating over 100,000 people. And they're packed every game. No NFL stadium comes close. Try planning a trip for like 2 or 3 weeks and stay in south or the east coast where teams are more clustered and try going to a different game every weekend.

Don't feel bad about saying Soccer, it was the British that invented the word. Since in the U.S. Gridiron Football is much more popular than Association Football, we just use the British word for the latter. Calling 2 different sports football would be confusing, even though both descend from Medieval Football.

Yes college football is bigger than the NFL in terms of popularity. Attendance averages about 85,000 whereas the NFL stadiums are typically built for about 75,000. In the southeastern conference alone there are four stadiums of over 100,000 seats a Michigan stadium is the second largest in the world. These college stadiums particularly for the larger schools were built in the 1920s and 30s and added onto steadily to reach their current size. Professional football really didn’t get going until the first half of the 20th century where is college football has been played since the late 1800s and has grown steadily. There are multiple divisions of college football based upon school size and team quality but there is no relegation. College football really came into it’s own when the networks bought the television rights involving hundreds of millions of dollars.
