Lahaina FIRE Recovery - 400,000 TONS of Ash - WHERE will it GO ????

  • Lahaina Fire Clean Up and Recovery. Now that the removal of hazardous materials has been completed by the EPA (which was phase 1), it is now time to move onto phase 2 which is the removal, transfer and storage of the the remaining ash and debris. This is the responsibility of the county and state who will be supported by the U.S. Army corps of engineers.
    I found a very informative video from the county of maui where the Director of Environmental Manegment for the county, his name is Shayne Agawa, he explains the location where they will be moving the ash and debris, how they chose the location, how it will be transported and how it will be monitored in the future.

    I lost my house in Santa Barbara and years after the cleanup I had my soil tested by an analytical laboratory and it was still loaded with heavy metals! Lead was super high but there was also an astonishing variety of other toxic metals present.

      There are plants such as lupine and others that will draw up the heavy metals thru their roots. Some of the plants also hold the soil together. After a year or two the plants can be pulled up and taken to an incinerator where the heavy metals get extracted thru the burn process and recycled or disposed of. The. You can rest the soul and scrape of the topsoil however needed and then add replacement soil.

      I read that fish bone meal can be used to bind the lead? Might be worth a try. The lead from pre-1970's paint was lead carbonate and changing that to lead phosphate is supposed to make it a less assimilable form for human health but I'm no expert

      I’m from Santa Barbara and was there during the dump fire that took out so many homes and businesses crossing State St into Hope Ranch and Tuckers Grove area. I’m assuming this the fire that took your home. Looking back at the many California fires that took out communities makes me wonder if these too were elite crimes against humanity.

If you're from Santa Barbara you know that we have a dry climate with tons of chaparral and because the Santa Ynez mountain range goes from 4000 feet to sea level in a matter of miles we have extreme down canyon winds. 100% of Santa Barbara's disastrous wildfires were caused by extreme wind events. Period! Nothing else! Jeez. I lost my house in the Jesusita fire. 6% humidity, temps scratching 100°, and winds gusting 70+!

    I do not mean to be offensive in anyway. These are things I myself had to consider. There are many things that the ashes can be made into. Mostly personal keepsakes for families. The scrap metal maybe that can be remade into benches, etc. Any glass shards or crystalized stones from driveways maybe can be polished and used as inlay. If that is all made into park items and placed say around the Banyan Tree or other areas, your folks will be near. Maybe professional remake, reuse, custom industrial artists can be of assistance. There is a ind. arts learning center in Oakland, CA.

    Temporary railroad tracks for the 3.5 miles might be helpful compared to "tens of thousands of truckloads"? Maybe the hill is too steep for the last part or they don't have the railcars? If they chose that route it would take about 450 of the Chinese 25 meter lengths of rail, and 9,000 or so concrete crossties and those could be reused elsewhere on the island after the project.

      czcams.com/video/6_uwrue9cnY/video.html
      15 minutes per 500 meter length of rail they would lay the 3.5 miles in less than a day - it is only 12 pairs of rail 5,634 meters in 3.5 miles I was mistaken about the 25 meter rail lengths I mentioned in my first comment - they are using 500 meter lengths now but perhaps only for the bullet trains

      Some evidence of NAPALM they’re hiding, Probably the accelerant used to make the perfect rings of fire around many blocks in Lahaina seen from the air. Straight lines NOT found in Nature. The trucks are destroying traffic, making a logjam day & night, discouraging residents from staying. Now, a MUCH larger area NOT BURNED is being seized thru EMINENT DOMAIN by the government! This is a huge landgrab. Foundations removed, other debris are being added, and those “burritos” torn open, never to be moved to the “permanent” area! It’s ALL going to drain into the Ocean onto the Mother Coral Bed & kill it! The liners are ONE layer of black tarp, already splitting open, and ONE layer of thin FELT, which is useless. The Mayor is guilty guilty guilty of “misinformation”

      There is no way to do that. Treating all the ash with respect is as good as it is going to get. This is the problem with most very hot fires. In chicago, the debris was pushed into the lake as landfill, which became our beloved lakefront parks. Another reason why when someone suggests selling or leasing that land for anything but public use, we get very upset. I think Maui will be treating this land with the respect it deserves.

    Build a processing plant nearby. You'll contaminate the rest of the island by moving it. Most of whats in the soil can be removed by scraping it off or by using plants that bring up heavy metals and toxins thru their roots and then removing the plants in a couple of years. Those metals can then be extracted from the plants when it gets incinerated.

    Thanks for posting this Jesse. There are some very important questions to be asked; 1: WHERE will we be able to take our debris if we opt out of the Army Corps of Engineers (ACE) cleanup, and how much will it cost us per cubic yard to dump? The reason I ask is that the ACE has said that if we want to keep our slab foundations they will NOT remove our ash debris. (Saving our slabs and adding a new structural slab over them will save us $100,000 or more in rebuilding per owner). 2: WHEN will we know the answer to question 1? We cannot make a logical decision based on cost and value without having the answer to these two basic questions! If they don't answer these questions in a very timely manner, many will be locked out of the ACE program and at the mercy of the powers that be as to the cost and viability of rebuilding.

I lost my house in Santa Barbara and even years after the cleanup the soil in my yard is still loaded with heavy metals. I took it to a lab to have it tested and I was astonished. I still do not allow children to play in the dirt in my yard.

    • @chrisbarriere101
      @chrisbarriere101 Před 8 měsíci

      Clearly neither of you have ever taken a college level science course. Ash contains very little lead as it usually cooks off and aerates into lead vapor with extreme heat. What lead does not aerate mixes with copper and aluminum to create alloy slag. Ash is not toxic, it is high ph and high in nitrogen, which makes it an ideal soil amendment, and key ingredient in organic fertilizer. Pure ash typically is very low in actual toxins, that’s would be the other debris.😂😂 go back to school

    • @chrisbarriere101
      @chrisbarriere101 Před 8 měsíci

      Aside from that obvious note there is also the fact that trapping any potential toxins inside a concretion such as a fire victim monument will keep them sequestered for up to 1000 years. Meanwhile an open pit up island is an environmental disaster in the making.😢 ignorance is a sin

It would require them to do things other than the way those contractors WANT and make the whole project less profitable for these contractors which were hand picked (Not though public vetting) by corrupt FEMA officials allowed to profit by the entire corrupt federal government structure.
