  • Soke Inoue Yoshimi (Rika Usami's legendary master) demonstrates some advanced tips to improve kicking techniques (keri, 蹴り). The following areas of improvement are discussed:
    - Weight distribution.
    - Muscle activation.
    - Hip joint mobility.
    - How to apply his "whip" concept to kicks, by quickly retracting the foot towards the gluteus after impact.
At the start of the execution of a kick, the body weight should be shifted from a 50/50% split between the two legs to 100% on the supporting leg. Subsequently, the hip flexor muscles (iliopsoas) should be activated to raise the knee. To facilitate and increase the knee lift, the supporting knee should be slightly bent and the pelvis should be slightly tilted posteriorly.
According to Soke Inoue, it is important to focus the attention on the hip joint rather than the knee when performing a kick. Excessive focus on the knee is typical of an intermediate level of experience and can make the kick trajectory more predictable and therefore easier to block. Soke Inoue stresses the importance of improving hip mobility by demonstrating a section of the bunkai of kata Seipai. Since daily living activities only require limited joint mobility, exercises to increase shoulder and hip range of motion are essential and should be carried out regularly.

    • Soke Inoue Yoshimi - S...
I recorded this video during Soke Inoue's seminar held in Caorle (Venice, Italy) on 18-20 October 2013. The seminar was organized by Sensei Francesco Favaron, founder of Inoue-Ha Shito-Ryu Italy:

Thanks once again for showing this amazing Sensei.
One regret I will always have about my karate journey is never having trained with this remarkable karate teacher. Who knows, if I met Inoue Sensei it may well have been enough to swing me over from Shotokan to Shito Ryu and altered my karate journey.
Just on the point of knee & hip. I've always been a hip & glutes person. But watching a video of Superfoot Wallace, he is a fan of knee rather than hip. And has scored some remarkable knockouts with his left mawashi geri. So I found what he was demonstrating very interesting.

I love these wise snippets of efficient karate movement from Inoue Yoshimi. Thank you for posting. No wish to be disrespectful but in almost all videos the other man (I presume Francesco Favaron) is always in shot moving about. This constant distraction spoils the magic.
