    While I didn't catch everything you were signing, your emotions definitely shone through! I could see the struggle you went through in school (I'm assuming some sort of forced speech therapy, which was very difficult for you, and you didn't have a very supportive instructor), and how amazed you felt when you found others who could sign with you.
    I hope some years down the road I can watch this video again and pick up even more understanding! Thank you for sharing your story :)

    LOL While that's true about the irony - here's an opportunity. There's alot to be leaned from someone's childhood by simply remaining connected to the pure visual information and not rely on a vocal interpretation to ease the pressure. What did you notice? Without knowing the vocab and grammar of ASL, what emotions did you pick up on anyway? One concept I got was that it seemed overwhelming for him in various settings. I hope you get a chance to pick up more sign along the way... : )

    That video was without subtitles. :-(

    • @TommiBrem
      @TommiBrem Před 10 lety

      I find that to be absolutely ok. I don't understand sign language. So watching this video does make me feel left out, inadequate even. Which is a good perspective to view things from every once ina while. Without the captions I am left with my own thoughts, in a futile attempt at grasping a meaning. I rely so much on hearing, even when listening to people speaking in a foreign language, I find it much easier to "get it". Like watching an italian movie in italian, I can still follow what is going on. I am so lost here. I find this uncomfortable position to be extremely important to be in. I can only speak for myself.

    • @mariaebbeskog2119
      @mariaebbeskog2119 Před 10 lety

      Tommi Brem I have found out that videos on you tube are just for one sort of people. This video is just for deaf American or deaf Brittish people. Some Swedish people makes videos for both English and Swedish people. Then it is for English speaking people is has English subtitles.

    • @TommiBrem
      @TommiBrem Před 10 lety

      Me being German and unable to understand sign language and still being interested in and touched by this video does sort of contradict your findings, doesn't it? One shouldn't underestimate the effort that goes into making one video for one audience. Adding audiences multiplies those efforts. I extremely appreciate everyone who makes that extra effort. But from my point of view, I don't think anyone has an obligation to make that effort.

    • @mariaebbeskog2119
      @mariaebbeskog2119 Před 10 lety

      Tommi Brem Well that is not the only video that is without subtitles. I have found many SWedish videos on you tube without subtitles. It's the same with English videos on youtube. The videos are just for one sort of people. In this case it's just for American or British deaf or hard of hearing people who kwows ASL or BSL. Maybe it is with English soundtrack but I can't hear English.

    • @TommiBrem
      @TommiBrem Před 10 lety

      It doesn't have sound at all, which is what I find so fascinating. Which might be considered a kind of an arrogant statement from someone who is hearing. Of course I would love to be able to understand what he is saying. And the fact that I can't unless I learn his language is what I find so important. When I was a kid listening to English songs, I didn't understand a word. Which is the very reason why I started learning English properly and vigorously in the first place. I blame Bob Dylan: I wanted to know what he is saying. With sign language it's similar. When watching signed videos, I mostly turn down the volume because I want to be able / force myself to concentrate on that language.
