#whyIsign
Our #whyisign story.
Transcripts below:
Mayumi: I sign because my parents and grandparents are Deaf. It was natural for me to pick up the language because of my unique surrounding. I still sign everyday being married to a Deaf husband and working at a Deaf school. With a baby on his way, I'll continue to sign.
JD: Did you know that she's a CODA (Children of Deaf Adults)? She signs 24/7, in her sleep and even in the bathroom too! As for me, my father decided to send me to a Deaf school after finding out I was Deaf. I can't imagine what kind of person I'd be if I grew up not signing. I'll also start early with my baby signing to him not only in ASL but also in JSL. The access to a visual language such as ASL is crucial for Deaf children. Without it, they will suffer.
That's why it's so important to sign.

I uploaded my ASL homework video on my friends channel, it wouldn't upload yesterday - Kristen Morrison
i wish people would put a caption for this.
Awesome!!! you can sign with ONE hand!!!!
That video was without subtitles. :-(
I find that to be absolutely ok. I don't understand sign language. So watching this video does make me feel left out, inadequate even. Which is a good perspective to view things from every once ina while. Without the captions I am left with my own thoughts, in a futile attempt at grasping a meaning. I rely so much on hearing, even when listening to people speaking in a foreign language, I find it much easier to "get it". Like watching an italian movie in italian, I can still follow what is going on. I am so lost here. I find this uncomfortable position to be extremely important to be in. I can only speak for myself.
Tommi Brem I have found out that videos on you tube are just for one sort of people. This video is just for deaf American or deaf Brittish people. Some Swedish people makes videos for both English and Swedish people. Then it is for English speaking people is has English subtitles.
Me being German and unable to understand sign language and still being interested in and touched by this video does sort of contradict your findings, doesn't it? One shouldn't underestimate the effort that goes into making one video for one audience. Adding audiences multiplies those efforts. I extremely appreciate everyone who makes that extra effort. But from my point of view, I don't think anyone has an obligation to make that effort.
Tommi Brem Well that is not the only video that is without subtitles. I have found many SWedish videos on you tube without subtitles. It's the same with English videos on youtube. The videos are just for one sort of people. In this case it's just for American or British deaf or hard of hearing people who kwows ASL or BSL. Maybe it is with English soundtrack but I can't hear English.
It doesn't have sound at all, which is what I find so fascinating. Which might be considered a kind of an arrogant statement from someone who is hearing. Of course I would love to be able to understand what he is saying. And the fact that I can't unless I learn his language is what I find so important. When I was a kid listening to English songs, I didn't understand a word. Which is the very reason why I started learning English properly and vigorously in the first place. I blame Bob Dylan: I wanted to know what he is saying. With sign language it's similar. When watching signed videos, I mostly turn down the volume because I want to be able / force myself to concentrate on that language.
it's 1849, not 1949, lol...
Yeah, I know. =) I added an annotation to correct that mistake. =)

Wonder what mascot you all to replace that word? here in Dallas, all high schools had to change any mascots related to Indians like apaches, Indians, chiefs.etc. they ordered all dallas high schools to change like to knights, Spartans, etc....I understand what you mean and respect.
I like "Native Warriors" or just "Warriors"
Good point better alled Washington
Good Vlog JD! I was thinking that I hope that the owners would consider adopting the name "Powhatan" for this team because I checked wikipedia and it says: "The Powhatan is the name of a Virginia Indian confederation of tribes." There were about 14,000-21,000 Powhatan people in eastern Virginia when the English settled Jamestown in 1607. Also, Potomac means "The Meeting Place" in Alonquin language spoken by the Powhatan. This name will show respect to the original peoples who lived in the area
Glad you liked it! =)
Thanks. =)
