  • I might have made a mistake buying a DD15 in my 2011 Freightliner Coronado and as I star having lots of problems with it. As an owner operator I can't afford to have problem after problem due to cost and down time.

I own a truck shop and dd15 and 13 are the most reliable and efficient engines. Like all trucks and engines, they need to be maintained and repaired. You bought a 11 year old truck. All the gaskets and seals are 11 years old! I have a fleet of 7 Freightliners I maintain for just 1 customer, and the dd15 can't be beat.

We have three dd15s we purchased new, all have over 1 million miles, none of them need oil added between 20k mile oil changes. One has 2 cylinders falling behind on compression but still gets better fuel mileage than our Volvos and Volvo powered Macks. I see a lot of people complaining about them, we’ll eventually run only Detroit 15s. We’ve also ran a lot of ISX Cummins and got 1-1.6 million out of them without overhauling. All complex machines require repairs.

I have a dd15 and at around 470k it began to show oil on the right side and found out it was thr crankcase breather assembly, it recycles the blowby and reduces crankcase pressure, when they go bad you'll see oil on the lower rightside of the engine , also at around the same mileage you'll need to replace the oil pickup tubes o rings and suction manifold , if you dont you'll begin to get a big drop in oil pressure , and it will ruin the engine .

Before you say, the air compressor is bad, I would build as much air as possible, turn the truck off: and get under there with a spray bottle full of soapy water. All trucks suck to own when the problems are misdiagnosed for the more expensive and obvious parts. Older trucks with low miles are not as good of a deal as people think. Even if the truck has low miles you still have to consider the age of the unit and just because the miles are low doesn’t mean the engine hours aren’t through the roof, and if the truck has emissions on it, that idle time is not your friend. Tolerances on trucks are getting tighter and tighter.

Hammering parts in versus installing parts correctly is makes sometimes huge difference. I have friends have oil pan gasket replaced every 6 month can't plug up the oil leak. Mechanic reused every bolts again and again used silicone mountains still leaking. Solution replace all bolts with new grommets. Problem solved. I have 720000 on my cascadia. Replaced oil pan gasket oil pump o rings radiator nox sensors dpf cleaned hydrocarbon doser hole cleaned periodically. I'm not saying perfect . No it's not . With correct maintenance and professional repair you can make one nice workhorse. It's not going to be the Pete but will make money. If I'm you first check crankcase filter.
