+Jason Ross Supposedly, the false chords were commonly used among tribal people to mimic sounds like a lion to scare enemy tribal members. So these sounds have been used sporadically throughout history.
The Vikings/Nordic people used to do this during rituals. It's been well written about.

I've heard similar sounds in the Canadian wilderness in the middle of winter. This was at -16C and like 95% humidity (figure THAT one out), making it feel like -23C. It was not a bear, as they hibernate. It was not a moose. It was definitely not a deer. And it was not a person in a foam and fur suit on in the middle of a forest, waiting for somebody to scare, in the winter. That's a good way to go hypothermic. I've been teaching myself how to do these kinds of vocals in hopes to get some first-hand answers for myself, and because i won't need to find a vocalist if i do haha

Hahaha worked pretty hard at it for a few years, never got that amazing at it though, just good enough to do a couple of gigs on vocals here and there
Decided to primarily focus on my guitar work instead and vocals is purely a fun thing now

I'm a completely self-taught vocalist and when I heard your style of screaming I was blown away and I couldn't figure out how you got that open-air sound into the scream I tried moving my tongue in so many different directions and literally the one I didn't try was putting it behind my teeth and the flat of my tongue to the roof of my mouth to create that are pocket thank you so much I can do it perfectly

to those that dont know. this vocal technique is called tunnel throat
The reason I don't call it that is because it isn't traditional tunnel throat, I do it slightly different hence the different name but yes the root of this style is tunnel throat.

This is a type of tunnel throat scream. Will Ramos uses this with a higher scream to make his famous pig squeal at the end of ‘To the Hellfire’. It’s probably my favourite screaming technique. It’s not the quintessential tunnel throat but it’s a variation.
