To celebrate the birthday of the late Rev. W. Awdry later this month, creator of The Railway Series and Thomas the Tank Engine, here we discover why Thomas is in a church stained glass window in the Cotswolds and what the meaning of the artwork is.
We've probably all seen the two windows before, but even I had no idea of what their story actually was, so I hope you enjoy this to tell you all about it. - Zábava
I never thought I’d hear the sentence “Thomas is not a biblical character”.
The impact that both Awdry and his characters have had on not only railways, but the whole world is truly remarkable. And no matter what happens to the franchise, Thomas the Tank Engine and the man who created him will always be remembered by those who immortalized them in places like these. Happy Heavenly Birthday, Wilbert Vere Awdry! You touched so many people’s lives!
Take that Mattel!!

The Rev. Wilbert Awdry was a member of the Talyllyn Railway and had a very good friend who was also a clergyman. He was Rev. Teddy Boston of Cadeby, Leicestershire. He had a two foot gauge railway round his vicarage and is also remembered by a stained glass window in the local church of him driving his steam locomotive.
In the books you can find two characters: "The Fat Clergeyman" and "The Thin Clergyman". They are not given any further name in the text, but it seems the artist knew who he was supposed to base the pictures on...
It's a shame to think that if these two stained glass windows were made today, the churches probably would be sued by Mattel for copyright infringement
It's amazing they put thomas the tank engine on the church windows
I agree
I visited the church at Emneth some years ago and me and my parents had a lovely chat with some of the old church members there. We also had a look at the outside of the Rev Awdry's old house there (before it got it's blue plaque!) but sadly weren't able to go inside at that time. Upsettingly they had an open day around the house a week or two after we went.
It was very sweet of the church pastor to construct a mural of Thomas of Wilbert Awdrys local chapel.
Happy Birthday to Reverend Wilbert Vere Awdry
You gave us a lot of joy to every Rail Enthusiast and your stories are still loved by people young and old.
I was very curious what this guide rail would be about when you mentioned it in the stream the other day (thanks for replying to my comment about Fenchurch by the way) and now I know.
It’s very nice that Awdry and his characters have been remembered in such a fitting way.
They put Thomas there as a teaser for Bible 2
as a Christian, i just wanna say hehehe
:D
I'm very sure that the Rev. Awdry was well aware of the existence of the diocise of Sodor and Man when he picked the name of his island. The island doesn't exist yet it does have a very real bishop!
"thomas is not a biblical character, of course"
he sure feels like one
He did forgive people for their cinders, a lot like a priest.
One of the Twelve Disciples was named Thomas, so there's that.
@@Daniel_HuffmanOne of the chapters in the Bible was James too.
The story of this window is actually really nice.
Amazing story. as a Christian, it makes me want to visit the Church windows a lot more.
Me: hears bells tolling...
The metalhead in me: "FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLLLS"
Watching the original classic model series and reading the books by the Rev W Awdry is how I got into steam trains and I would never have imagined that it would have such a huge impact on my childhood but I glad to be part of a amazing community sadly I can’t make the extravaganza at the Talyllyn Railway for this year but hopefully I will be able to do it next year 🤞thanks for sharing this beautiful tribute to a wonderful man who brought us all joy through his stories of a very special blue tank engine 👍💙
It certainly means a lot to a lot of people. Be sure to watch the livestream of the Extravaganza this Saturday on the Talyllyn's CZcams channel!!
@@Terrier55Stepney what’s your favorite Strasburg locomotive
I can bet my bottom dollar how outraged everyone at this church was when Mattel rebooted Thomas & Friends.
The text of the symbolism behind the window with Thomas, was kind of depressing.
Great video, Max. I might has noticed that before and I still do to this day.
Happy Birthday Awdry, Thank You For Thomas The Tank Engine And His Friends :)
This makes me curious if it's possibly to visit Thomas's world in the after life. 😅
It's a beautiful work in stained glass, but very sad to my eye.
Like to think the good Reverend is having a whale of a time chasing trains with his friend Reverend Boston in the hereafter.
I've been there!
June 15th is his birthday
God bless indeed!
Thomas Meets Jesus & Other Stories
I love thomas his my best friend and thomas his friends are helping too.
Thomas: why bless me!
Question, in this video: czcams.com/video/_6yrMVPeWvM/video.html, what did you use to make the scratch built Toby?
Hi and I got a profile pic now🎉🎉
Praise the Almighty Thomas the tank engine
I'd like to poing out that those are NOT! the last 6 volumes of the railway seriese. as there are actually 42 books! yes 42! The remaining books were written by his son Christopher, and fell out of print and hidden under a rock by the publisher who owns the rights to those books in order presumabley, to save money.
That’s cool my last name is Stroud
As a Catholic, I need this in my church
Hi
I knew the fans would make fan art but this is ridiculous😂
I Don't Know
“Thomas is not a biblical character”
I don’t know man when your stories are written by a literal reverend and your history and lore is basically it’s own Bible collection with you now being cemented physically into a church…..
